9. Chapter 9
Chapter nine
" I don't care what she says," Haven whisper yelled in case there were any spying ears in the grasses around them. Roman and Haven were currently in the field across from the cabin taking some time to process what they had just been told per Binahs suggestion.
"I don't believe her, there's no way I'm some fae royalty!" Haven continued.
In the minutes since Binah had told them that they were not only fae, but fae royalty, Haven had come to terms with the fact that they were definitely not in North Carolina and that they may even be in another realm, but fae royalty? That was a little too over the top.
Binah had assured the pair that more than likely they were the descendants of one of the bloodlines that had already been found and that they wouldn't have to rule in any official capacity if they did not want to. Apparently there was some sort of test to show what bloodline you belonged too and what powers you held. Supposedly, either the first born or the child with the most power was set to rule. Since children for each bloodline except the missing two had already been found it was unlikely that either Haven or Roman would be in a position to rule.
Forgetting the fact that they were supposedly fae, apparently they also had powers! Binah had told them that it was a little more in depth than them just simply having powers and that if they wanted her to, she could explain. At the time the pair had said no, choosing to think over the lot she had already dumped on them.
Haven sat down in the tall grass, Roman sat next to her. He seemed to be taking this whole thing a lot better than she was.
"Suppose I actually believe that I'm not just hallucinating and this is actually real, what would that even mean? What would happen? Would I just be sequestered off to some castle to live out my days as some sad princess? Would I ever see my mom again?"
Roman contemplated for a moment before responding, "Well I suppose you could probably take a portal like the one we came through and forget this ever happened"
Haven almost snorted, "Oh yeah, I travel to some strange land and find out that not only am I a princess but a fae princess, that I'm not even human and have magical powers and then I'm just supposed to forget about it?" Haven paused and shook her head, "How do we know that we're actually royalty and not just some lost kids. I mean, I don't even have the ears! Aren't fae supposed to have pointy ears?"
Roman laughed, "Well as Binah explained, being here with her means that you have to be royalty not simply some lost kid or fae from a family that decided to stay in the human realm. She explained to us that her sole purpose has been to guide the royal fae and that we wouldn't have appeared through the portal where we did if we weren't royal. As for the ear thing," He laughed again, "maybe we should ask her"
Haven smiled, Roman made some good points. They also needed to decide what they were going to do, the sun had started setting and soon it would be dark.
Haven drew her knees up to her chest, rested her head in her hands and asked Roman,
"How are you so calm about this? Isn't your head spinning out of control?"
Roman shrugged,
"I guess it just makes sense. I don't know, something about this seems right. It's like I finally found the missing puzzle piece and now I can see the whole picture."
Roman had a decent point. Right after her father died, Haven had imagined that his death would turn out to be some big mystery and lead her on this amazing adventure. Looking back, that was just a daughters way of coping with the loss of her beloved father. The thing was, this whole situation had the exact same feeling. It felt like this, right here, was leading up to a big adventure. Romans words said it perfectly; somehow, this felt right.
But first, Haven had some questions.

Binah was right where they left her, sitting at the table in her garden sipping tea.
"We have some questions" Haven announced
"I am sure you do." Binah responded and gestured for them to sit down. Haven and Roman sat, the latter picking up a small biscuit off a plate Binah must have placed on the table while they were out in the field. The sun beginning to set had Haven a little on edge. She hoped they could get this figured out before the sun went down and all the light disappeared.
"Out with it child" Binah gently insisted, as if Havens momentary pause was keeping the woman from something important.
Haven took a deep breath, "First, why don't we have the pointy ears?"
She gestured to Binahs long pointed ears. When they first met Binah, Haven assumed she had hallucinated them. Now she was almost sure they were real.
Binah chuckled, "Of everything you could ask, that is what you want to know first?"
"Yes." Roman stated. Apparently not having the cool ears was bothering him as well.
Binah sighed, "It's simple, you have lived in the human realm your whole lives. The magic that makes fae the way we are, that gives us our powers, hasn't taken hold in the two of you yet. If you spend enough time in the fae realm, your features will change to what they are supposed to be. Just like how your powers will develop."
Haven had planned to ask how they were supposed to get back home but she got stuck on Binahs words,
"Powers?" She asked.
Binah nodded, "All fae have powers but it can vary from fae to fae. There isn't one rule that determines how powerful a fae may be. For example, you may come from a lineage of incredibly powerful fae that have ruled for centuries, but there is no guarantee you will have even a fraction of their power. Although, the type of powers does usually stay consistent within a line. If both parents are blessed with the ability to bend water, then more often than not, the child will have similar powers."
Haven appeared stunned, Roman slightly less so. This was a lot of information for them to take in at once. Binah must have noticed how overwhelmed the pair had become because she stood and announced,
"I believe the two of you need to rest. We can talk more tomorrow, for tonight I will set you up in the spare rooms in my cabin"
"Wait!" Haven called after her, standing to follow the older woman, "What about my mother? She has to be worried sick! I just disappeared." Haven wasn't entirely sure how long it had been since she and Roman went over that cliff, but surely her mother had to know she was missing by now. Someone from the school must have told her.
Binah gave Haven a pitying look, "My dear I believe she knows exactly where you are. As I told you earlier, you come from fae parents so more than likely when she found out where you were going she would have known where you would end up."
Binah paused for a moment before continuing,
"Most of the fae rulers and those from their lines know where the portals are. She would know what happened as soon as someone told her where you disappeared."
Haven felt faint; to think that not only had her mom had been lying to her, but that she secretly had some other life as a ruler of a magical race of fae? The idea that her mom could have lied about something so big and important made her heart hurt. What about her dad? Did he know? Was he also fae? Was this what those late night fights were about? There were too many questions tumbling through her head.
Haven felt Romans steadying hand on her back. Leaning into him slightly, she simply nodded and followed Binah into the house. All the while wondering how her friend could be so calm about all of this.
