Sean Current Day

I had to get off the bed so the nurse could check Cassidy’s cervix. She barely gave me a disapproving look for being in bed with my wife. It wouldn’t do her or anyone else any good to reprimand me. Cassidy’s comfort meant more to me than their rule. Besides, they’d deliver the baby on a clean pad anyway. I kept my shoes off the bed.

My eagerness to meet my son was growing by the second. We’d been waiting months. He was real to us. The moment we found out Cass was pregnant, he became so, but even more when we found out we were having a boy, and we chose his name. Even Noah knew his name, although when he said it, it came out Nas.

I kissed her hand as her nurse did the exam. When she was done, her nurse smiled as she removed her gloves. “You are at eight centimeters and ninety percent effaced. It shouldn’t be long now. Try to rest. You’ll be working soon.”

As she left, I quickly kissed Cassidy, making sure not to get carried away this time. When I lifted my head, I crowed, “He’s almost here, babe! Can you believe it?”

“Yes and no. God, I can’t wait. Sean, I can’t believe this is our lives.”

“Me either. I was thinking about us and how this all came about.”

“Me too.”

“Remember when I stayed to heal after the car accident in Florida?” I asked.

She got a dreamy look on her face. I had to admit, I loved that memory. It was what ultimately led to us having Noah and Nash. I let myself recall those special memories along with her.
