Chapter 18
Charlotte
A few nights later, Samuel was jerking me awake and not in a good way. I groaned and tried to pull the covers over me.
"I will consider waking up if you choke me," I grumbled before closing my eyes again. "A little," I added because a girl could live in hope.
"Baby, Glenda took a fall. We need to go to the hospital," Samuel said softly. "Your phone was vibrating, and I answered it."
My eyes jerked open, and I felt panicked as I sat up.
"I-is she okay?"
"No broken bones but the doctors are still assessing her," he said as he got up and whizzed around the room in a blur.
When he stopped and stood in front of the bed. He was fully dressed, and he had laid some clothes out for me. My lips trembled, and I blinked my tears away as I looked at him.
"Thank you," I said before I quickly got out of bed to change.
Samuel didn't hesitate. As soon as I was dressed, he lifted me up and raced down the stairs towards the car.
When we reached the hospital, all I could think of was my elderly grandmother crumpled up on the floor in her home. Thankfully, her apartment was on the ground floor.
"Perhaps we could ask Glenda to move in with us? There is plenty of room," Samuel said as we briskly walked towards her ward.
I stopped and pushed myself upward to kiss his cheek.
"Thank you. Granny is stubborn, so I'm not sure if she would say yes. She has a booming social life. I'm sure she had a better sex life than me. Well, before I met you."
He frowned.
"Let's just pretend you've never had sex with anyone except me," he said.
I narrowed my eyes on him.
"And how many sexual partners have you had?"
"I think we should check on Glenda," he said before taking my elbow and dragging me along the corridor.
By the time we got to her room, Granny was fast asleep. I couldn't see any bruises or cuts on her face. Samuel pushed a chair in my direction.
"I'm going to speak to the nurse about us staying tonight and her condition. Do not leave this room," he stressed, making me roll my eyes.
It wasn't the usual procedure to let people into the ward at this time of night, but this is why I loved Elgin. Everyone knew one another and helped where they could. I watched him leave before I looked at my Granny in the dim light.
They had stuck a needle into her hand, and I smiled faintly, thinking about her grouching in the morning about how she had been stabbed by the nurses.
"Finally," a voice said.
My eyes shot up, and I saw the slimy, dirty, blood-sucking bastard who had been hanging over us like a dismal cloud of doom.
I wasn't scared, I was pissed. I slowly stood up and moved away from my Granny, hoping they had drugged her up so she wouldn't be disturbed.
"Aye, finally yae show yur skanky, creepy arsehole here," I said, reverting to my not-so-posh accent.
Within a blink of my eye, he was standing beside me and slapped his hand over my mouth.
"I've got some questions for you," he growled.
Over his shoulder, I saw Samuel walk into the room, and his eyes turned bright red with a tinge of orange in the middle, which couldn't be good for the creep. The dark rage on his face was something I'd never seen before. It changed his entire face, and I realised he truly was a monster when he chose to become one. He didn't hesitate. He dove for the creep and literally flew out of the window, dragging the creep with him. The sheer velocity of his movement left me stunned.
My heart was pounding so fast as I watched a few pieces of the remaining glass fall onto the floor. I glanced at Granny, who was still asleep, before I ran towards the window. We were on the second floor, but I was sure that vampires were pretty much indestructible.
