Chapter 30
Ezra had her. All he had to do was reach out and grab her arm or hair, something to make her stay with him, but she'd gotten away. He spent the rest of the week searching for Danika, coming up empty.
Surely, she couldn't have gone far, or he'd thought so before he'd spent the week looking around that dirty, swampy city. One night, while searching, he stepped into a three-inch deep puddle, ruining his shoes. Not only had he destroyed a pair of shoes, he'd wrenched his back out of shape.
Anger and disappointment had been his consolation prize because Danika had disappeared. When he found her, he would make her pay dearly for leaving him.
Once home in England, he'd started a different kind of search for her. If he couldn't find her in Savannah, he would have to start looking for the trail she'd left.
His business had suffered because of her. Not only was he in pain, he had lost money and a lucrative contract. It would take him months to gain back what he'd lost.
During his first week back in London, he made no headway in finding Danika. The only time he could search was late at night because his days were filled with meetings and work activities. Somehow, he had to come up with an additional three hundred thousand pounds that one of his ex-business partners was making him pay because stuff had gotten so mucked up while he'd been gone.
The best way to make extra money was to shake a rich guy down. On the second Saturday back in England, he decided to hit the mark. He and his crew drove out to Bath and met with the man, telling him they were art dealers. The guy bought it hook, line, and sinker until the end of the weekend. That's when the dude turned on them.
Ezra wasn't sure exactly what happened, but by Sunday at ten that evening, he and his guys were being shot at as the man chased them off his property. This failure was Danika's fault, too. He'd not been prepared and picked badly. Now, they needed to make an extra three hundred and fifty thousand pounds.
It wasn't fair for her to leave him this way. She'd always been a pain, and now he really had to make her pay. Soon, he would figure out where she was, and then he would have something special planned for her that she would never escape from. It was the least he could do for the bitch that had ruined everything.
