13. Micah

CHAPTER 13

Micah

I speed through town, my heart racing. Colt's voice is screaming through the phone, telling me to stay put. They've got it.

"Fuck that, Colt! That's my woman. I'll be damned if I'll sit on my thumbs while you play hero or some shit!"

Colt huffs. "I knew I shouldn't call you. I just wanted you to stay clear until we've got it all buttoned up."

"Too damn bad. If that was your woman would you stay put?"

"I'd know what the hell I was doing, dumbass! I'm a cop."

"Just get her out of there. I'm gonna be there in a minute."

I growl under my breath and hang up the phone, my blood racing so fast that spots dance in front of my eyes.

The ex. The fucking ex. I knew he wasn't done. Knew he wouldn't just take off like he should have done.

I pull up about a block away from her house and park, shoving my keys in my pocket as I jog up the road. When I round the corner to Heidi's street I see that they've made sure that it's closed. Cops are posted at both ends of the street and Colt is pulling on a bulletproof vest and checking his gun. He glares at me.

"I told you to stay put. You're gonna get someone killed."

"I'm not going anywhere. You said she's hurt, dammit!"

"We can get an ambulance out here."

"No fucking way." My jaw clenches and I growl at him. "I'm gonna take care of my woman. And if you need more help I'm gonna go in with you."

He cocks his head. "I've got a better idea. Cassie's hiding in her bedroom. One of us was going to go in through the window and get her out of there. If you think you can stay out of the way, I'll let you do that."

I grin at him and point. "Do I get one of those?"

"A bulletproof vest?" He rolls his eyes. "Fine." He turns to one of his men. "Get him a vest." He turns back to me. "We're going in for Heidi in five minutes. That's all you've got to get Cassie out of there. The less time Heidi is in there with him, the better."

I nod my head. "Agreed."

I slip the vest on and one of the deputies leads me around back. He helps me open the window and boosts me up. "Cassie?" I whisper.

I see her pretty blue eyes peeking at me and smile. She starts to say something but I put my finger on my lips and she stills. I drop to the ground and help her out from under the bed. She hugs me and I feel her body trembling. I rest my forehead on hers and tears sting my eyes.

I love this little girl. Just like I love her mother. Desperately. Wholly.

"Let's get you out of here," I whisper and she nods, wrapping her little arms around my neck, her head resting on my chest.

I wish to God it was both of them but I have to trust that Colt will handle things and get Heidi out of there before I lose my mind. And I know that Heidi would want Cassie safe. So I need to do this for her. For them both.
