14. Heidi

CHAPTER 14

Heidi

M y head is throbbing and I rest my chin on the back of the couch as Josh paces around the room, his hands waving and his voice getting louder.

"I'm telling you. I made a mistake, Heidi. I love you. I want you. Don't tell me you don't miss me."

I shake my head. I'm not playing his damn game. "I don't miss you, Josh. I don't love you anymore and I don't care how many times you say it, you don't love me. What the hell is really going on here?"

He stops and glares at me. "You are still the pain in the ass that you always were, Heidi. Why can't you just believe me?"

"Because I believe all the other times you told me how you felt. I was fat. I was too manly. You didn't want me. Blah blah blah."

He growls and stalks closer to me and my whole body stiffens. His arm grabs onto mine, pinching tight. I wince and he smirks. The fucker still likes to hurt me.

My face clears and I yank at my arm. "I'm not going anywhere with you, Josh. I have a life here that I love. I have friends and Cassie's happy. There is nothing for me with you."

He turns away and paces towards the hall and Cassie's room. My heart stops.

"I think Cassie might want to be with her Daddy. Every little girl wants her Daddy."

I scramble up and block him. "She doesn't want to see you, Josh. You couldn't tell that when she was trying to get away from you? We've both moved on. You didn't want us. Now you might as well just get the hell out of here."

He turns and glares at me, his mouth tight. "I'm not gonna do anything that I don't want to do, Heidi. So don't bother running your mouth to me. I don't remember you being this mouthy."

I shrink inside myself but I keep blocking the doorway. He moves closer and I flinch but hold steady. His hand comes up and I duck my head, flinching and closing my eyes.

The door whips open again and this time the room is swarmed with cops. Loud screams and bangs erupt and I close in on myself. My eyes open, shock screaming over me.

"Get down, asshole!" Colt screams, his gun trained on Josh. His face is white, his lips tight and his mean eyes are narrowed at them.

"You're making a mistake. You don't know who you're dealing with."

Colt snorts. "I'm pretty sure I know exactly who I'm dealing with. Get the fuck away from her and get down on the floor before I decide that I need to put you there."

Another cop comes around and he grabs hold of me as I sway, the blood rushing to my head. The room swims and I groan, "Cassie?"

"We've got her, Heidi. It's all over."

I smile and blackness rushes over me, cradling me in its soft arms and finally killing the pain.

The last thing I hear is a familiar voice screaming, "Heidi! Sweetheart, you're okay. I've got you."
