12. Cassie

CHAPTER 12

Cassie

I know he didn't see me take it. I pick up Mom's phone and check to see if I can find Micah's number. Micah will help us.

But I don't see it.

But they tell us in school who to call when we need help. Dad said it was an accident but I don't believe him.

He hurt Mommy. Just like he did before. And that's not right.

I find the keypad and dial 911.

"What's your emergency?" The calm voice makes me smile. I wipe at my tears and sniffle.

"Hello? How can I help you?"

"My Daddy is here and he hurt Mommy."

A deep breath comes through the phone and then I hear noises. "Stay on the phone, honey. How old are you?"

"Seven."

"Oh, so you're a big girl. That's good, sweetheart. Where are you and where are your Mommy and Daddy?"

"I'm in my bedroom. Mommy sent me. She and Daddy are in the living room talking. But she's bleeding."

Another deep breath and she says, "Can you hide somewhere, honey?"

"Yeah. Maybe under my bed."

"You do that. We're gonna be right there and we're gonna make sure that you and your mom are never hurt again. Now you go hide and take the phone with you. Don't talk after you hide but stay on the phone with me. I'll tell you when it's safe to come out. How does that sound?"

"What about Mommy? She can't hide." I scramble under the bed and pull my horsie under there with me. I prop my head on him.

"Don't you worry about it. Your Mommy is smart. She'll make sure that she stays safe. This is Cassie Crane right? And you guys are at your house? Just to make sure."

"Yeah," I whisper, hearing loud voices in the house. I close my eyes and whisper, "hurry."
