20.

Z OEY

When my phone buzzed, I lifted it off my chest and looked at the screen before I smiled and called out, “I’m over here!”

“Where is ‘here?’”

“I’m in the store,” I replied.

“The what?” Garvey called out, still at a distance, but I could tell he was getting closer. I raised my arm so he could see the light from my phone and heard him curse before he asked, “Are you okay? Did you fall?”

“No. Watch for the strings,” I warned before he got too close.

“What the fuck?” I heard him mutter before he walked up beside me. “What are you doing, woman?”

“I’m taking a nap in the office.”

“If you were anyone else, I’d ask if you bumped your head,” Garvey said as he dropped down to sit beside me.

I laughed, happy that he could finally joke about my injury like the rest of us. I hoped that he was finally coming to terms with the fact that my attack was the cause of my condition and not the wreck he and I had been in years ago.

“Do you like my office?” I asked.

“Zo, you’re freaking me out a little.”

“You’ll be able to see the layout better in the morning when it’s light out. Right now, just trust me when I say that we’re sitting right in the middle of the office floor, and to our right is the entryway where the checkout island and the . . .”

“Your hallucination has an island, too, huh?” Garvey asked sarcastically.

“Tomorrow, they’re going to start leveling the ground to pour the concrete, and yes, there will be an island in the middle of the entryway with three registers that look at the different areas of the store.”

“The store.”

“Yep.” I pointed as I explained, “That way is going to be pots and cute outdoor stuff like wind chimes and birdbaths. Over there will be bulk seeds, fertilizers, and shit like that, and down there will be the entrance to the commercial greenhouse where customers can buy plant starts for their own gardens along with house plants and whatnot.”

“Wow.”

“I told you this was going to be a real business.”

“Honey, you’ve done so much already that there was never a doubt in my mind it was going to be. I just didn’t realize it was going to be this big.”

“That’s what she said,” I replied with a giggle. I heard Garvey sigh, so I changed the subject and asked him, “How did the meeting go?”

“Very well. Thanks for coming in to introduce me. I hope you understand that I’m not trying to hide anything from you, but it would probably be easier for the attendants to not have their boss watching them while they talk.”

“Not a problem. I completely understand. Besides, even if I didn’t, I trust you anyway.”

Garvey laid down beside me and propped himself up on his elbow as he asked, “So, are you going to use this blanket as the rug in the new office, or will you find another use for it?”

“I can think of a use for it right now,” I said as I slowly turned to face him.

He gave me a few seconds to adjust before he asked, “Are you done?”

“Yep. All set,” I said cheerfully as soon as my eyes stilled and I stopped feeling like I was on a carousel. “You’re finally getting used to me, aren’t you?”

“Honey, every day with you is an adventure, so I’ll never get comfortable with anything because knowing you, it’s gonna change as often as the wind blows.”

I grinned and said, “I keep things exciting. That’s what puts the sparkle in your eyes.”

“I don’t know about a sparkle in my eye, but you definitely put the ‘what the fuck’ wrinkles in my forehead.”

In the waning light, I could see his face well enough to know that he was smiling. I was still laughing at his expression when he leaned forward to kiss me.

I was breathless and didn’t want the kiss to stop, so when it did, I asked, “Wanna get naked and christen my new office?”

Garvey chuckled before he murmured, “Fuck yeah,” against my neck. I moved closer to him and rested my leg over his hip. I smiled when I felt his hand run from my knee up to the hem of the workout shorts I was wearing. He chuckled again before he asked, “Have I ever told you how much I love these shorts?”

“No,” I answered as I tugged on his shirt so I could get my hand beneath it to feel his skin. I loved the feel of his muscles twitching as my hands roamed over them and smiled a little when I realized that they weren’t quite as hard as they had been when he arrived almost a month ago. He kept insisting that I was going to make him fat by cooking dinner every evening, but for some reason, I loved knowing that he enjoyed my cooking and felt proud of myself every time I made a meal for him.

Garvey and I had started working out together, although he did a much more aggressive workout than I ever planned to. I wasn’t up for a long run every morning like I used to be, but I considered the physical work I did all day long enough to make up for it. However, Garvey insisted that running was how he processed his thoughts and kept himself centered along with regular meetings and almost daily contact with his new sponsor - my Uncle Tucker. For the last few days, he’d combined those things by running into town and having coffee with Tucker before he did a long loop around and came back home.

“You’ve got on too many clothes,” Garvey muttered as he slid his hands down the back of my shorts to cup my ass. He pulled his hand out and then nudged me to lay on my back before he said, “We should fix that problem.”

Garvey lifted each of my legs to take my shoes off while he let my brain adjust to the new position and then ran his hand up my legs and over my shorts until he got hold of the waistband and slowly pulled them down my legs as I lifted my hips to give him better access. Once my shorts and panties were tossed aside, Garvey reached up behind his head and pulled his shirt off, and I smiled at how much easier it was to see his skin in the dim light.

I curled up to a sitting position slowly to give myself time to adjust and licked his nipple before I yanked my own shirt off along with the sports bra I’d been wearing.

“I love it when you’re naked,” Garvey muttered before putting his hands on each side of my head and holding me in place for a hot kiss that curled my toes. While he kissed me, I took the opportunity to unbutton his jeans and push them down over his hips before I did the same with his boxer briefs, letting his already hard cock spring free. When I pulled away from his mouth and kissed my way down his chest, he groaned. The second I wrapped my hand around his cock to guide it to my mouth, I heard him gasp before he said, “I love it when you do that too.”

I didn’t answer because my mouth was full of him. I worked at his cock with my tongue as I tried to take all of him, something I couldn’t do no matter how many times I tried. I couldn’t see his eyes in this light, but I could tell by the tension in his body that I was taking him closer and closer to the edge. I knew that the second he moved, he’d be taking me to the ground with him.

I wasn’t wrong. In the next instant, he pulled his hips away and pushed me to my back. He hooked his arms under my knees as I recentered myself.

“Ready?” he asked, knowing now just about how long it took for me to adjust. When I moved my hips, he took that as my answer and filled me in one stroke. Even after all the times we’d been together in the last month, the burn and stretch took a second to get over. I’d come to appreciate that.

With my ass up off the ground, at the mercy of his arms, there wasn’t anything I could do but enjoy the ride. I took that opportunity to cup my breasts and squeeze my nipples just the way I liked as Garvey fucked me like this was the last time we’d ever be together.

Over the last few weeks, he had learned exactly what it took to get me there, and right now, he was using all of that knowledge to bring me to a quick and . . .

Suddenly, he leaned forward, resting my ass back on the ground as he moved over me, changing his strokes from hard and powerful to slow and sensual. It wasn’t the first time he’d done this to me, and when I growled at him, he laughed wickedly while he kissed his way up my neck to my ear.

“I love you, Zo,” Garvey whispered before he nipped at my earlobe. “How much do you love me?”

I tried to lift my hips to take him deeper, but he was too heavy. He laughed again when I grunted with the effort.

“Garvey, every time you get me right there to the edge and then change things up, I plot your death. I just want you to know that.” My words ended in a gasp when he pulled back and slammed into me a few times, ramping me up again as I wrapped my legs around his waist and held on. The way he bumped my clit with each thrust was spectacular, and it didn’t take more than a few to get me right there on the edge again. And then the bastard stopped moving and actually fucking giggled. “If you don’t quit playing around and fuck me like you mean it, you’re gonna end up the star of a Dateline special!”

Garvey was still laughing when he pulled out of me and sat back on his heels. I didn’t have to be able to see his face to know that he was grinning. I lifted my hand and twisted his nipple before he could react. He let out a loud howl of pain, and it was my turn to laugh. While he was still stunned, I flipped over. I was able to power through my dizziness and push up on my hands and knees. By the time it was gone, I had moved back until I was impaled on him once again, but this time, I was the one in charge.

Garvey let out a shout when I slammed down onto him, taking his entire length inside me as I reared up so that my back was to his chest. He wrapped his arms around me, and soon had one hand cupping my pussy while the other teased my nipples. With the pressure from the heel of his hand on my clit hitting just the right spot, I bounced up and down on his cock until my orgasm crashed into me and I couldn’t move anymore.

I fell forward onto my hands again and felt Garvey running his hands over my ass and my back as he slowly moved his hips back and forth. I knew then that he wasn’t finished with me yet.

Oh, no. The asshole still had plenty of life left in him, for now anyway.

“Dateline. Special.” Garvey laughed as he started moving again, and I asked, “How in the hell can you manage to hold yourself back like this? You’re killing me.”

He ran his hands over my ass again and then leaned forward and dropped a kiss between my shoulder blades before he whispered, “Because I’ve been dreaming of this for years and years, and I’m afraid that I’m going to wake up someday.”

“When you say stuff like that I almost don’t want to kill you,” I murmured as I pulled away and laid back down in front of him. I bent my knees up and let my legs fall wide before I said, “Come here, Gravy. Love me.”

“Always, sweetheart. I’m never going to stop.”

“Remember that Dateline special we talked about?” I asked without opening my eyes. “I’m thinking about using sleepwalking as my murder defense. If I do, what do you think they’ll title the episode?”

“I just can’t . . . Fuck!” Garvey yelled before he threw the covers back and jumped out of bed. “What the hell is wrong with me?”

“That’s what I’m wondering,” I muttered as I tried to get my eyes to focus. I saw him moving up and down near the bathroom and figured out he was scratching his naked back on the wall. “What the fuck are you doing?”

“I’m itching!” he growled before he groaned loudly. “I don’t know what’s wrong with me, but I’ve got some sort of rash.”

My first reaction was to shiver, remembering how I felt when the ants were swarming all over me, but then I felt a twitch on my shoulder blade right before my left breast started to itch. “Whatever you’re doing, you’ve got to stop. Now you’re making me itch!”

“I can’t help it. Holy shit. It’s like my back and my ass are on fire.” Garvey groaned when he scratched the back of his neck, and I couldn’t help but laugh. “It’s not funny, Zo! I didn’t laugh at you when you were covered in ant bites.”

“I know, and I’m sorry, but the way you’re scratching your neck reminds me of Zane’s dog.”

“Ugh! I’m going to go take a shower and see if that helps.”

I slowly sat up in bed, trying my hardest not to laugh as I watched his naked ass hurry into the bathroom. I must have made some sound because he flipped me off and then slammed the door. I couldn’t stop myself then and burst out laughing only to hear him cussing me over the sound of the shower spray.

Even though I wasn’t sure what was bothering him, I couldn’t see any problem with trying Calamine lotion on his back when he got out of the shower, so I slowly turned and put my feet on the floor. Once I was steady, I stood up and walked that way and then bit my lip to hold in my laughter when Garvey started cursing loudly.

“Now we know that hot water on a rash is not the best idea,” I mumbled to myself as I walked into the bathroom. I was standing at the sink looking through the tote that I kept my creams and lotions in when Garvey stepped out of the shower and reached for the towel.

“Now it’s worse!” As he used the towel to scratch his back, holding an end in each hand and pulling back and forth, he asked, “What does it look like?”

“Oh, shit,” I muttered as I walked closer to him.

I let my gaze trail down over his ass, not even taking the time to appreciate it, and saw the welts on his back stopped about mid-thigh - as if there were a perfect line or barrier there.

“Uh-oh.”

“What?”

I reached out to touch him and then yanked my hand back before I asked, “You didn’t happen to use any mosquito spray before you came out to find me last night, did you?”

“Yeah. I drowned myself in it before I walked out the door.”

“But then you took your shirt off and pushed your pants down to your knees,” I said quietly before I pulled my lips between my teeth to bite back a smile when Garvey turned around and glared at me. Without thinking, I asked, “At least your dangly bits were . . . um . . . covered by me, so they didn’t get bitten, right?”

“Are you itching?” When I shook my head, he asked, “Why the hell not?”

“They don’t like me. I don't think I’ve ever even had a mosquito bite. Zane’s the same way.”

“How in the fuck does that happen?”

“I’m not sure there’s really a scientific reason, it just does.”

“When I go to trial for killing your brother, that’s what I’m going to use as my defense.”

“You’re gonna take out my brother before you murder me?”

Garvey leaned forward and barked, “Scratch!”

I scratched with both hands, not sure how much good it would do since my nails were short because of all my work in the gardens. Garvey didn’t seem to mind, though, and moaned loudly before he started moving around to make sure I hit the spots that needed it most.

“Isn’t there a rule that you’re not supposed to scratch a mosquito bite?”

“I don’t know. Is there?”

“Well, I wouldn’t know,” I reminded him.

When he growled loudly, I laughed at him and said, “Let me find the antihistamine tablets and see how much Calamine we have left. If nothing else, I’ll make a pharmacy run just for you, sweetheart.”

“And that is why it’s not going to be you on my Dateline episode.”
