Chapter 9

Blaine

D ammit. How could this happen?

Blaine woke up wet. Horny. Clingy. And needy.

All the things he hated about his body.

It was all Wayden's fault. Blaine gave the shuttle a lethal look and continued to trudge through the knee-height snow to the main hut. The cold seeped through Blaine's thin coat, but he didn't fucking care. He needed to get away from the shuttle and Wayden's big, warm body before he did something stupid, like climb him like a fucking tree and find out whether the hard cock Blaine had felt digging into his back all night long was as thick and big as it had felt.

Blaine blushed.

His heat was definitely approaching, or Blaine wouldn't be thinking such things. Blaine didn't want to fuck Professor Douche. He didn't want to fuck anything. Blaine had stayed away from alphas from the moment he'd had his first heat. He was a virgin by choice… and he fucking liked it that way. No alpha was going to claim him… ever.

But why was this happening now? Blaine asked himself, baffled. He'd drunk his herbal tea religiously. He shouldn't be going into heat, especially since he upped the dosage.

It didn't make any sense.

Blaine bit the inside of his mouth, worried. His fingers tightened around the small sachet in his hands as if it were his lifeline. The heat suppressant tea was his only solution. If he couldn't get his body under control…

No. He couldn't think like that. He would not let what had happened to his brother happen to him.

He just had to bring his body under control. It didn't help that he had to share a bed with Wayden. Blaine had thought it would be easy, since the tea prevented him from feeling anything, but the minute Wayden got into bed it was like a switch was turned on inside him.

Blaine shivered, just thinking about it.

Dammit, no.

He had to find a way to make his body stop, even if it meant that he had to drink the tea every day. Blaine dusted the snow off his clothes as he walked into the hut. A blazing fire in one corner beckoned. Blaine wanted nothing more than to go there and soak up the warmth. But he had no seconds to waste. He had to deal with his stupid body. He walked deeper into the hut, heading towards the cooking station.

"I need hot water." Blaine rushed to the first omega he came across.

"It's over there," the omega pointed him to the other side of the room, where a large pot hissed as it released steam. "We're making tea for everyone; you can help yourself."

"Thank you," Blaine said, making his way there. He got himself a cup of hot water and moved to the counter. He opened the sachet and almost cried when he saw what was left. It wasn't enough for him to drink a cup every day.

As things stood, it would be gone by the end of the week.

Shit. He stared at the dried leaves hopelessly. Tears prickled Blaine's eyes, and he felt like crying.

Fuck… fuck… fuck… What was he going to do? Blaine asked himself, panicking.

No… no… he could fix this. He just needed to ask his mom to send him more. There was no need to worry, Blaine told himself as he stuffed his hand in his pocket to take out his connector.

He paused, as a thought hit him. How long would it take for a delivery bot to arrive? Did the pack even accept delivery bots? They were so isolated. They had an airway, so surely…

Blaine flagged down the same omega he'd asked for hot water as he passed by him. "Do you guys accept delivery bots?" he asked.

Blaine's hope was crushed when the omega shook his head. "The service doesn't reach here. Besides, we have everything we need here," the omega said.

Not everything! Blaine wanted to scream. He held it in, forcing a smile. The omega walked away, leaving Blaine alone to deal with his problem.

Shit. This might be a big fucking problem.

Maybe Wayden wouldn't stay there for long. They could be on their way soon, before his heat started. He still had some tea left. It usually took eight doses a month for the herbal tea to stop his heat completely. Since he'd upped his dose, he should be fine.

It was going to be okay, Blaine told himself as he stared at the dark leaves sinking to the bottom of the cup and turning the water a reddish brown.

Nothing was going to happen. It was not like he liked Professor Douche. Blaine would never let himself go there with the alpha. Never.

If he went into heat, then…

No. This will be enough. I won't go into heat, Blaine told himself with conviction. He couldn't even remember the last time he'd gone into heat. It would probably take time for his body to detox and for everything to start working properly. Hopefully, they'd be somewhere civilised, and his mother could send the tea by then.

Blaine picked up the cup and then put it down immediately, his conviction wavering.

Maybe he should let it steep for a while longer. The stronger the tea, the better. Blaine watched the omegas move around the cooking station, getting breakfast ready for everyone. A few betas and alphas were there to help them – doing the heavy lifting. Everyone knew what needed to be done and they did it. They moved in a harmonious way that was intriguing.

The pack clearly had something they didn't have out there. What was it? Blaine asked himself. He picked up his cup of tea and sipped it slowly, as if that would help with his problem.

The hut slowly filled with the other pack members looking for something warm to drink. Blaine watched them, fascinated by how they interacted with each other. Even when Escala, their alpha arrived, they remained somewhat the same. The only change was that they all seemed to gravitate towards their alpha. They took turns going to him. Escala gave each pack member his full attention. They talked, laughed and Escala would rub his hands along their arms as if he was trying to keep them warm. But Blaine was sure that wasn't the case. They were all dressed warmly. The fur coats they wore were enough to keep them warm.

What was Escala doing? Blaine stared at them for a while, and then jolted as he remembered something. Shouldn't he be recording this? They were here to observe the pack after all. Blaine drained his tea and jumped to his feet. He ran out of the hut and into the cold.

Shit, he groaned as the cold wrapped around him and his shoes filled with snow. His flimsy clothes were no match for the weather. By the time they left he'd have frozen to death. That's if his toes didn't fall off first.

Shit… shit… shit… shit… he mumbled to himself as he ran – well, tried to run – in the knee-deep snow. When he reached the shuttle, all he could think about was getting into bed to warm himself. The thought of sinking into the bed and wrapping himself in Wayden's scent caused goosebumps to erupt on his skin. Blaine's stomach fluttered in anticipation. He couldn't wait to be enveloped by Wayden's scent.

Dammit. What was wrong with him? He should fight this need. It was weird and stupid.

But it felt so good.

No. Stop it, Blaine snapped at himself. He rubbed his arms as he rushed into the shuttle, not stopping to think as he opened Wayden's bedroom door. He stopped in his tracks when he realised that the room wasn't as empty as he'd thought. Wayden was still in bed. And he was… Blaine's eyes dropped to the naked alpha on the bed with his hand wrapped around his straining cock.

Oh shit…

"Blaine," Wayden gasped, staring at him, eyes wide.

Blaine turned and ran out of the room before Wayden could say anything. Dazed, he made his way out of the shuttle and stared at the white landscape, not sure where to go. He couldn't exactly go for a walk. It was freezing. He had only one option.

Blaine tried to not think of what he'd just seen as he made his way to the main hut. He walked inside and made his way to the fire. Other omegas were already seated in front of the fire, chatting. As he got closer, Blaine could see that they were making something. Pieces of cloth, yarn, hide and other things Blaine couldn't identify sat in baskets in front of them.

"What are you guys making?" Blaine asked.

Owen, one of the omegas Blaine had met yesterday, handed him a piece of cloth and a needle.

"Join us," he said, patting the space next to him for Blaine to sit. "We're making a blanket for Green's cub. He's going to be born soon."

"Green?" Blaine asked, sitting down. He stared at the needle. He hadn't seen one of those in a while. They didn't use these anymore. They had bots that fixed their clothes now.

"Oh, you haven't met him yet. He couldn't come out because of the snow," Owen said. "His alpha is busy clearing a path in front of their hut so he can move easily. He'll be here soon. You can meet him then."

"You said the cub is coming soon?" Was Green going to have the cub here, without medical assistance? Were they crazy? Blaine bit into his bottom lip, not daring to speak his thoughts out loud. They probably had their own way of doing things. But Blaine couldn't help think that it was scary.

"Yes," Owen said excitedly. "Green can't wait. We haven't had a winter cub in a while. It's exciting."

Now that he said it, Blaine hadn't seen a lot of young cubs here. Not like in Luka's pack.

"Why?" Blaine asked. "I heard that omegas are happiest when they have cubs."

Owen laughed. "You don't sound like you believe that."

"I don't."

Owen laughed again. "You'll like it once you have one."

"I doubt that," Blaine said. "And you? Do you have one?"

"Not yet, but I will once I get bonded. I thought you were bonded since you…" Owen trailed off as his eyes dropped to Blaine's shoulder.

Blaine blushed, covering his neck with his free hand. "That's not what you think. And you haven't answered my question," Blaine said, changing the subject. The damn mark wasn't fading fast enough for his liking. It was fucking embarrassing. "Why haven't you had a winter cub?"

"I thought it was obvious," Owen said, looking around him. The other omegas stared at Blaine as if he should know the answer. Blaine sighed, already getting bored. He hated guessing games. "A lot of cubs are made in winter," Owen said after a few minutes. The group laughed as if Owen had said something profound.

Blaine laughed along with them, not wanting to seem weird. They chatted on, their conversation turning from cubs to eligible alphas and betas in the pack. The omegas squealed and blushed as they described their crushes.

Speaking of alphas. The door to the hut opened a few minutes later, and Blaine knew who had walked in without looking. The back of his neck prickled in awareness, and he could feel a change in the air. Blaine's heart beat faster, and he couldn't fucking breathe properly. Wayden's naked body lying on the bed flashed through Blaine's mind. Blaine closed his eyes, shoving the image away, along with the needy feeling that pulled on his cock.

Shit. Why was this happening? Professor Douche shouldn't affect him. Blaine shouldn't fucking feel anything. He had drunk his tea a few minutes ago. His body should be as cold as the fucking snow falling outside. Blaine stared at the cloth in his hand as heat scorched his back.

Minutes ticked by as he waited for something… anything. But nothing happened. What? Had he imagined the alpha? He was sure he'd felt him come in. Blaine's nose twitched as he sniffed the air for Wayden's scent. He almost moaned in pleasure as Wayden's scent filled his lungs.

He was here, Blaine thought, feeling weird as the alpha's presence somehow comforted him.

Shit. He must be going crazy.

Blaine shook his head and focused on what the omegas were doing. He tried to follow along, sewing the piece of cloth into the larger one they were creating, but his curiosity got the better of him. He kind of wanted to know what Wayden was doing. And he wanted to see him again… catch a glimpse of him.

The feeling was so strong that Blaine couldn't resist. A tingle cascaded down Blaine's back as he looked over his shoulder, just to see where Wayden was. Blaine gasped when he found Wayden staring at him.

He quickly looked away, a shiver going through him. Why had he looked at him like that? Blaine resisted the urge to look at the alpha again.

Fuck. This was so awkward.

"Are you alright?" Owen asked, giving him a strange look.

"I'm fine," Blaine said with a small laugh, shoving his weird feeling deep inside him where he couldn't feel them. "I'm afraid I might mess up your beautiful creation. I've never done this before."

Owen touched Blaine's arm and gave him a quick pat. "Don't worry. There's a first time for everything. I'll teach you."

"That would be nice," Blaine said. He half listened to the omegas as they chatted on, his body too aware of Wayden on the other side of the room. Blaine tried to follow Owen's instructions, but because his mind was elsewhere he pricked his finger with the needle, hurting himself. "Owww!" Blaine cried, dropping the needle. "I can't do this."

"You can. You're going to need it when you have a cub of your own," Owen said.

"If I ever have a cub, I will buy one," Blaine said. Not that he was planning on having a cub.

"It's better when you make one. It's precious," Owen said, undoing the mess Blaine had made. "Here, try again."

"Fine," Blaine said, easily giving in because he didn't have anything else to do. Even though sewing didn't exactly stop him from thinking about Wayden, it was better than doing nothing.

Breakfast was served a few minutes later. Blaine took his time putting the cloths and needle back into the basket. He needed a minute to compose himself before he had to face Wayden. By the time he decided to go to the tables, the only seat that was available was next to Wayden.

Shit. The fucking universe hated him

Wayden stared at Blaine. The tension between them intensified, and Blaine couldn't breathe properly again. Maybe going hungry was an option that Blaine could explore. It was better than sitting next to Wayden. Blaine could barely breathe as it was. And he wasn't even next to Wayden yet. How was Blaine expected to eat with the tight feeling in his stomach?

"Sit," Wayden bit out before Blaine could make up his mind. "You're making it worse."

"I'm making it worse," Blaine snapped. He dropped into the chair next to Wayden. "I… you're the one who…" Blaine trailed off as heat suffused his cheeks. Fuck. Blaine couldn't even say it. He glanced at Wayden to find the alpha still staring. "And can you please stop staring at me? It's making me uncomfortable."

"Dammit," Wayden sighed. "What were you even doing barging into my room like that, anyway?"

"I was…"

Fuck. Blaine couldn't tell Wayden that he'd been cold, and he'd wanted to warm himself by wrapping himself in Wayden's scent because it comforted him and made him feel better.

It was weird, Blaine knew. He was fucking working on it. But it didn't seem like he had any control over it. He was drawn to Professor Douche. Whether he liked it or not.

"You were what?" Wayden asked.

"I was… I was…" Blaine tried to think of something to say. His eyes fell on Escala at the head of the table and the omega who was greeting him. Escala had his hand on the omega's arm, and he was rubbing it the same way Blaine had seen him do with the others earlier. "I wanted to record that," Blaine said pointing at them. "I wanted to ask your permission."

Wayden turned to the head of the table to look at the pair.

"I thought their interaction was interesting," Blaine said. Wayden was silent for a while. "It's interesting, right?"

"It is," he said thoughtfully. Blaine breathed out a sigh of relief when Wayden's eyes narrowed in fascination. "I think Escala might be scent marking the omega. I've read about it. Alphas in the olden days used to scent mark their pack members, but it's not practised today. I never thought I would get to see it."

"Is it important? It's kind of weird." Blaine stared at Escala and the omega. "I've never been touched like that by an alpha."

Wayden stared at the pair, not answering him. It was clear his mind was already on his research. Blaine was happy the alpha's focus was on something else, but…

Fucking needy feelings. Blaine hated it. He didn't need Wayden to focus on him. He didn't need him doing anything. He was there to work. And that's what Blaine should focus on.

"Should I go fetch the recorder?" Blaine asked. Wayden didn't respond, as if he hadn't heard him. Blaine wished he knew what the alpha was thinking. He looked so deep in thought. Blaine opened his mouth to speak again, but Wayden turned to him, causing his heart to flutter.

Blaine held his breath.

"No. Let's observe them for now. I don't want to disrupt the moment. Bringing a strange device in their midst might change the flow of things," he said, a strange look in his eyes. Wayden turned away and started to eat.

Butterflies fluttered in Blaine's stomach. "Okay," Blaine said unnecessarily. He started to shove food into his mouth, barely tasting anything. He was so flustered. He needed to get away… get away from the feelings churning inside him. He needed to get away from Wayden. The alpha was becoming too much for him to handle. Wayden was confusing him, making him feel things, want things. And his heat… fuck Blaine didn't want to think about that.

He shoved more food into his mouth, but a piece of something went the wrong way. Blaine started to choke, making embarrassing sounds right there in front of everyone.

"Shit," he heard Wayden say next to him. And the next thing he knew he was wrapped in the alpha's arms – his back to Wayden's chest as he tried to save him. The shock of Wayden's warmth seeping into his body made Blaine feel dizzy. Or maybe it was because Blaine couldn't breathe. Why wasn't he breathing?

"Breathe, baby, you're okay," Wayden said, holding him tight. Blaine took a breath and then another. "Are you okay?" Wayden turned him around to look at him.

Embarrassed, Blaine nodded.

"Here. You're shaking." Wayden took off his coat and draped it over Blaine's shoulders. "You're freezing. We need to get you warm clothes."

We? Blaine stared up at Wayden. Did he mean he and him… together?

Before Blaine could figure it out, Owen rushed to them. "Are you alright?" Owen asked, fussing over Blaine. Owen dragged him away from Wayden and brought him to the fire pit. "Sit. I'll bring you some water."

I'm fine, Blaine wanted to say, but Owen was already rushing away. The other omegas came and crowded him, fussing over him like he was a cub. Maybe he was one, because he had been behaving like one lately.

It was all Professor Douche's fault. When Blaine was next to him it was like his brain couldn't work. He couldn't make rational decisions, he became… weird.

Owen came back with a cup of water and Blaine gulped it down.

"Are you sure you're, okay?" Owen asked. "Maybe we should go and see the healer."

"No. I'm fine," Blaine said, embarrassed. He was causing so much drama. Blaine was glad when everyone went back to what they had been doing, the incident forgotten. He sat in front of the fire, warming himself.

A few minutes later, Wayden came to him. Blaine tried hard not to react to the alpha but failed miserably. His cheeks turned warm, and his heart thudded hard in his chest. The attraction was too strong.

What was he going to do?

"Come," Wayden said, walking to the front door. Blaine silently followed him out of the hut. He slipped a few times on the frozen path. Wayden turned around to give him a concerned look.

"I'm fine," Blaine growled, Wayden's concerned look irritating him to no end. "Where are we going anyway?" he asked, wrapping Wayden's coat around him. Had it got colder or was it just him?

Wayden shook his head and continued to walk ahead of him. Blaine slipped again and this time he almost broke his neck as he tried everything in his power not to fall. Arms and legs went every which way as he tried to grip air.

"Dammit, Blaine," Wayden grumbled as he caught him before he hit the ground. "You're going to kill yourself before you ask for help, aren't you?"

"I…"

"Shut up," Wayden snapped, picking him up. Blaine bit the inside of his mouth, swallowing the protest on the tip of his tongue. Wayden walked down the path to a hut further away than the rest. The hut had whimsical decorations outside that made it look like the vintage stores Blaine had seen in the capital. He'd always wanted to go into one of them, but he'd never had enough credit. It felt strange that he was finally at one of those stores, but he wasn't alone. He was with an alpha – not just any alpha but Professor Douche. Life was sure full of surprises.

Wayden placed him down on his feet just inside the door. The smell of leather, wool and fur filled Blaine's nose. He looked around the large room. Coats, pants and other clothing items were folded neatly on shelves around the room. "Escala said we can find warm clothes here. Choose whatever you like."

Blaine walked to the nearest shelf and ran his hands over the woollen pants. They were soft, made of the finest wool.

Wow. He would like something like this. But the price was steep, and it wasn't in credit. Blaine picked up another pair of pants. The price was wool.

"They don't use credit here. I don't own any of these things. I can't…"

"Don't worry about that. I'll take care of it. You need warm clothes. You can't go around wearing that," Wayden interrupted him, pointing at Blaine's clothes. Blaine opened his mouth to say something, but Wayden shook his head. "Stop arguing with me or you'll make it worse."

"Make what worse," Blaine asked. "This is the second time you said I'm making things worse when I haven't even done anything."

"You think you haven't done anything?" Wayden scoffed. "You're adorable."

"I'm not adorable," Blaine snapped.

"I didn't mean that as a compliment." Wayden turned and stared at the beta staring at them. Blaine blushed. He hadn't noticed the beta standing there.

Blaine's blush deepened.

"They think there's something going on between us. And you fighting with me every second doesn't help." Wayden stared at Blaine's neck and then looked away. He picked out a fur coat and walked to him. Wayden took off the coat he'd given Blaine. "Arms up," Wayden commanded.

"When did I fight with you?" Blaine asked. "I haven't even said anything since we arrived here."

"You don't have to say anything for you to fight with me. The look in your eyes says it all. And you're always tense around me," Wayden said.

"That's because…" Blaine trailed off, biting the inside of his mouth. He couldn't tell Wayden why he was tense around him, because Blaine didn't understand it himself. It didn't make any sense. Blaine hated Professor Douche. He wanted nothing from the alpha. All Blaine wanted was to defeat Wayden, like he'd done other alphas. He wanted to prove that omegas were above all alphas, that they could go toe to toe with an alpha and emerge the victor. He wanted to see Wayden break and crumble.

However, Blaine's emotions had somehow got entangled. He was weirdly attracted to Professor Douche. And Blaine hated it. No other alpha had ever made him feel this way.

"Raise your arms, Blaine," Wayden rumbled, sending tingles down Blaine's spine. Blaine's cock jerked in his pants, his hole growing wet and needy. All his omega instincts, the ones he'd suppressed all his life, rushed to the surface and Blaine wanted nothing more than to get close to the alpha in front of him. To do everything in his power to coax the alpha to take him to his bed, to fuck him until the ache in between his legs disappeared. The need was so strong – visceral – something Blaine couldn't deny.

He wanted Professor Douche.

"Blaine." Wayden's voice hardened, melting his insides. Blaine gritted his teeth, resisting the feeling. But it seemed to intensify the longer Wayden stared him down. His alpha scent thickened, swirling around Blaine, making him a little dizzy. Blaine couldn't resist him. His arms twitched as he slowly complied.

I fucking hate you, Blaine thought, wishing he could tell Professor Douche to fuck off. But he couldn't.

Blaine's stomach fluttered as Wayden helped him put on the coat. Wayden's fingers brushed along Blaine's neck as he turned the collar for him. Blaine shivered. The need to lean into Wayden and feel his warmth gripping him – tight.

No.

"I got it," Blaine said, stepping away from him. Fuck, he needed to get himself under control. He buttoned up the coat, feeling warm immediately.

"Here. I think these will be enough for our stay here." Wayden threw a couple of pants and a pair of boots Blaine's way. "Now, let's get to work. I asked Escala if it was okay to record and he gave his permission," Wayden said walking out of the hut without waiting for a reply.
