Chapter 10
Wayden
K eep walking. Don't look back.
Wayden forced himself to walk up the slippery path to the shuttle, even though everything inside him urged him to go back to Blaine. He balled his hands into fists as the desire grew stronger. He wanted to go back and help the little devil into another coat and another, until he satisfied the weird feeling inside him. It had felt good to take care of the omega. And the feel of Blaine's skin against Wayden's hand had felt so good, Wayden longed to touch him again.
Wayden rubbed the tingly sensation in his fingers away. He hadn't meant to touch Blaine. It had just happened.
And calling him baby that time just happened too?
Fuck.
Wayden looked over his shoulder at the hut, hoping Blaine hadn't noticed that slip up. Wayden didn't even know what had gotten into him. He just… he rubbed the back of his neck feeling out of sorts. Blaine was complicating his life, making him do things he shouldn't do. Wayden sighed when he thought of what had happened earlier that morning. Blaine walking in on him while he was… Wayden's face turned warm.
Forget about it, he told himself.
Thinking about it would just make it worse. He walked into the shuttle and gathered everything he needed to start work. He went to the main hut, where Escala was seated in front of the fire with his pack. They looked like one big family, all warm and cosy. Wayden quickly set up the recorder and eased into a chair a few paces from the pack to observe their interactions. Blaine walked into the hut a few minutes later. He was dressed in the coat Wayden had picked out for him. Wayden had thought Blaine wouldn't wear it. The omega was so combative that Wayden wouldn't have been surprised if he'd come back still wearing his thin jacket.
Wayden's heart did a funny little dance at the sight.
Dammit, he shook his head and looked away. He shouldn't like anything Blaine did. He shouldn't be pleased that Blaine had listened to him for once – that the omega obeyed him. But Wayden did.
This was fucking crazy.
Wayden tried to focus on the pack in front of him, but his eyes kept drifting to Blaine. He couldn't help it. The omega really looked good in that coat. Wayden noticed other alphas glance at Blaine too and he hated it. A dark, possessive feeling welled inside Wayden, causing his wolf to surge to the surface to fight, to claim Blaine and show his dominance.
No, Wayden groaned, shoving it back. He breathed a sigh of relief when he felt his wolf settle inside of him. At times like these, Wayden was glad he was not an aggressive alpha like his brother. The last thing he needed was to start acting all territorial. He didn't need his alpha instincts involved in this messed up situation.
Blaine was the worst kind of omega to have the slightest feelings for. The little shit would laugh in his face if he knew how he felt about him.
Focus on work, Wayden told himself. He looked away from the alphas to focus on the pack. The pack members came in and out of the hut, talking to Escala and going about their daily life.
The pack hung out in the hut around Escala for the whole day and most of the evening since there wasn't much to do outside. Snow started to fall again right after dinner, and everyone called it a night. Blaine came and stood awkwardly next to him while Wayden packed up the recorder.
"You can go ahead; you don't have to wait for me," Wayden said.
"I'm fine," Blaine said. "You're done anyway."
"Right," Wayden said, feeling awkward and tense. He finished packing and they made their way to the shuttle. The light from the twin moons illuminated their path. It felt a little surreal – a mystical snowy night, romantic and intimate. It would have been nice to be there with someone who was his. Someone Wayden could share this blissful moment with.
Wayden glanced at Blaine and quickly looked away. Blaine wasn't the kind of omega who could be his. The omega was just… Wayden shook his head. Maybe he was cursed. He had a penchant for being attracted to unsuitable omegas.
Ambrose came to his mind. The omega would have hated it here. The cold breeze coming off the frozen lake, the snow wetting their clothes and the primitive life the pack led – he would have hated it all. Ambrose loved his comforts. That's why he'd left Wayden. Ambrose wanted things Wayden couldn't give him… supposedly. Not that Ambrose had asked Wayden or anything.
Wayden rubbed the achy feeling in his chest. Falling in love was overrated.
"I've never seen the twin moons so bright in the sky. I feel like I can touch them," Blaine commented beside him. The omega lifted his right hand up to the sky. Wayden pulled in a breath as he stared at Blaine. Blaine's gorgeous face was turned to the sky, a tiny smile pulling at his lips. He looked stunning.
"You can't see them properly in the capital because of the light pollution," Wayden mumbled.
"I know," Blaine said, his eyes full of laughter. "I'm glad I got to see them. It wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for you."
Huh? Wayden stared at Blaine confused for a second. "You…"
"Come, it's cold out here," Blaine said walking ahead of him. Wayden stared after him, trying to make sense of what had just happened.
Was Blaine being nice to him? Why? Wayden's confusion deepened. He knew the little devil wouldn't be nice to him for nothing. What the fuck did he want? Was Blaine thinking of another way to torture him?
Just the thought had Wayden's stomach squeezing with a strange mixture of nervousness and – even though Wayden didn't want to admit it because it was fucking crazy – excitement. It lit up his insides, burning a fire he hadn't felt in a long time. Wayden's legs suddenly felt like goo. Taking a stuttering breath, he walked into the shuttle cautiously, as if Blaine would jump out from nowhere. Wayden heard Blaine in the bedroom, probably getting ready for bed. Wayden's eyes fell on the closed door, and he couldn't help but remember what had happened that morning.
All day long, they'd skirted around the issue. Wayden had held his breath waiting for Blaine to say something, to taunt him, but Blaine hadn't, which left Wayden feeling a little worried. Blaine was unpredictable. He never knew what he was going to say or do.
Wayden loitered in the cooking station; his eyes firmly fixed on his bedroom door. He felt stupid for sitting in the cold and not going to bed. Not that it was freezing cold, it was just uncomfortable. Uncomfortable enough that he should be under the covers now, not loitering in the cooking station, waiting for Blaine to fall asleep.
It was stupid, but he couldn't fucking make himself go in there. Wayden tried not to imagine Blaine in his room, in his bed, wrapped in his covers, by distracting himself with his notes and reviewing the footage he'd taken earlier. He could do that later when he'd gathered all his research but….
He was a coward, that's what he was. Wayden silently groaned, baffled by his behaviour. He wasn't one to shy away from a challenge, but for some reason he couldn't face that slip of an omega in his bed.
An hour later, when he was sure Blaine was asleep, Wayden made his way to his room. The room was dark with a tiny slice of light from the twin moons coming through the small window. Wayden tiptoed his way to the clothing cubicle and took out his sleeping clothes. A strange sensation prickled the back of his neck and he felt like he was being watched. Wayden turned and found Blaine staring at him in the dark.
Fucking hell, the little hellion was still awake.
"Did I wake you?"
"No. I wasn't asleep," Blaine said, looking away. He looked shy all of a sudden. That was so unlike him. Wayden stood there frozen not sure what to do. They stared at each other for a full minute, tension thickening in the air, making it hard to breathe.
"I'm just going to…" Wayden coughed. The tension in the room was electric, snapping along Wayden's skin causing his blood to rush south, hardening his cock.
Fuck.
"Okay," Blaine said in a soft tone that did things to Wayden.
Don't, Wayden wanted to shout at him. Why was Blaine suddenly going all omega on him? He was speaking all sweet and soft to him. Blaine wasn't like that. What was going on?
"What?" Blaine asked, pulling the covers to his chin. Wayden stared hard, wishing he could see Blaine properly. The light from the twin moon wasn't enough for Wayden to see him. "I thought you were going to get changed."
Wayden gave Blaine one last look before he made his way to the washroom. He closed the door behind him and stood there for a second before he shook off the confusing feelings. Blaine was probably grateful for the clothes. That's why he was being nice to him. There was no other reason.
Wayden didn't know much about the omega, but Wayden had noticed that Blaine didn't have much.
It had to be the clothes, Wayden thought, turning the bathing bot on. He quickly got cleaned up and dressed, then he made his way back into the room. He rounded the bed and got under the covers, Blaine's eyes following his every movement. Wayden's stomach tightened as the tension in the room intensified, turning sensual and electric. Wayden became hyperaware of Blaine's body next to his – he was so close, and he smelled so good. The omega's scent was intoxicating and seemed to be getting sweeter by the second. And Wayden couldn't help but react to it. His cock hardened and the need to reach for the omega tingled through him causing his fingers to twitch.
Fuck, they were never going to rest with all that hanging around them.
Wayden sighed and turned to Blaine.
"Let's do it," he said.
