Chapter 46
“There’s nothing else,” the berserker male growled, spitting blood in the direction of Woo.
The metal chair he was strapped to creaked as he moved his big body.
My job consisted of observing and keeping my mouth shut. I was about to be an intern; I wouldn’t risk ruining that over some idiot they questioned.
It had been a couple months, and today I was completing the grueling training to get into the Unnatural Bureau. Training had been the least of my struggles. The real challenge had been the distance from my mates. We’d kept to our weekly visits, but they were just enough to stave off the itch to be around each other. It had taken every inch of willpower I had to tear myself away this morning. Enzo had helped get me out of the other’s clutches in time.
Since Woo was Sims’s partner, Enzo shadowed him so we could be together. There’d definitely been some string-pulling with our assignments, with our sleeping arrangements—Enzo and I did everything together. But it worked in their favor too. Enzo and I kept each other in check. Little by little, things were coming together. There could never be absolute peace, but at least now the Unnatural Bureau could do its fucking job.
The UB had raided this warehouse yesterday, and we were brought in to watch how they processed and reported everything. The amount of paperwork was ridiculous. I knew because I’d been forced to do the load of it. Grunt work for the win.
I shifted from foot to foot, watching the berserker refuse to give information about other warehouse locations. Or, as he claimed, there weren’t any others, but according to victim reports, there had to be one somewhere in Orange County. Sims just couldn’t pinpoint the area.
“What are you looking at bitch?” The berserker spat in my direction.
I’d been spacing out as I watched the interrogation. Anger echoed from Enzo through our bond. Enzo wasn’t fast unless he wanted to be, so I hadn’t expected his hand to lash out until the berserker’s head whipped to the side and blood spurted from his mouth. Enzo returned to my side and crossed his arms, expression flat like he’d not just bitch-slapped him.
I closed my eyes and sighed.
Woo cleared his throat. “We need answers.”
I met Sims’s eyes and tilted my head slightly. Enzo and I had been part of the clean-up crew for a few hours before we’d been called in here. I had a feeling she hoped I’d be able to get answers from him. She waved me forward.
I dropped my arms to my side and slammed my hands on the metal surface. The berserker lifted his gaze to mine. I reached for my Thrall. A warmth tugged my gut and spilled up my chest. I could distinguish my abilities more potently now.
“Tell us what you’ve been hiding about the warehouses.”
After that, he spouted every location. Fucker had been lying through his teeth, which we’d all sensed, but what a douche. After that, the job wrapped up.
“Good job, Maya.” Sims patted my shoulder. “At this rate, your promotion will come soon. You two, head out, it’s been a long day.”
Enzo and I shuffled out and headed to his SUV. We’d been lucky that our last assignment was near home. We’d be based at the Arizona location and only fly out if necessary.
I typed out a response to Elliot and swiped out of the messages.
“What is that?”
“What?” I clicked the side button on my phone to make the main screen go black.
“On your screen, Maya,” Enzo gritted from clenched teeth.
The picture of Beckett’s leg tossed over Enzo. “Nothing.”
“That wasn’t nothing,” he snapped. “Change it.”
“No.”
“Maya.”
I smirked and avoided his swipe. Dashing to the passenger side, I hopped into his SUV. “Hurry up, I want to go home.”
Enzo glared at me from outside the driver’s side window. I pouted until he narrowed his eyes. He shook his head and got in the vehicle. “Brat.”
The picture thing wasn’t over, I had no doubt about it, but he had to pry my phone out of my dead hands if he wanted to change my screen saver.
