Chapter Thirteen

The next morning, we were heading out. I was not sure if it was safe for her to go home. Then I got the text on the work phone:

The contract can be bought for two million dollars. This is a one-time deal, and you can no longer hunt for our organization. Please wire the money and destroy the sim card in this phone. There will be no more communication.

I made half a million with every job, so I had built up quite the nest egg. My earnings were in an offshore account that even the cartel was not aware of. They wired my money to one bank, and I would then transfer my money to my private account.

I wasted no time in transferring the two million back to the account they knew so I could send it as payment. I knew this did not guarantee her safety, or mine, for that matter.

We had a lot to discuss.

Cait

Whatever he was working on, he looked very pensive. We were checking out of the hotel today so I was guessing we would go home. I was so wrong .

“They let me buy your contract,” he said, looking pensive.

“What does that mean exactly?”

“It means the hit is canceled. It does not mean we are out of danger, though. Now, we could both be in trouble,” he explained.

I started shaking, this shit was scary. “What do we do?”

“We cannot go home. Either one of us.” He said it so matter-of-factly, like it was a normal everyday thing.

“Ever? What about my job?”

“It was your job that got you into this,” he sounded frustrated.

I burst into tears. He swooped me into his arms. “Look, we can go anywhere we want. I have money and I can keep you safe.”

Cait looked at me in shock. The thought of losing her life was slowly sinking into her.

“I'm sorry.” That was all I could offer her .

She held me tightly while the tears continued. I knew nothing I could say would help. We packed up and got in the car with no certain destination in mind.

Six Months Later

We had ended up in Costa Rica. Both of us bleached our dark hair, leaving us sporting blonde locks. We both decided to wear non-prescription glasses to change our looks some more.

I knew someone who was able to make passports and false I.D.s for Cait. I already had my own. For now, we were as safe as we could be. But I would always be on guard. Watching, waiting.
