Epilogue

Epilogue

Maverick

5 years later . . .

“Do we have to get up?” Cooper whines, burying his head further into his pillow, and I chuckle.

“Yup. Come on. I’ll make you breakfast. You have appointments, Dr. Adair.”

I can feel him smiling even before he turns his head to look at me. “I love that.”

“Which part? The doctor or the Adair?”

He leans over and kisses me, leaving his left hand on my cheek, the one with his wedding band on there. We tied the knot officially two years ago, but he pretty much moved in with me that summer we stayed in Oklahoma.

When he started school in the fall, I rented a house in the city for us to stay in, close to school and the shelter. We sold my old house that we loved, but what we really wanted was this . . .

I look out of the bay window of our bedroom, the curtains pulled open and showing off the country skyline. We built our dream house close to my parents’ ranch so we could help out any time they need us, and Cooper started his veterinary practice just last week in town.

So far, he’s fully booked up for a month. He thinks it’s because he’s my husband, but I think it’s because Cooper’s energy is bright and addictive. People flock to him, just as they should.

Ralph jumps up on the bed, yapping away and just trying to help me out. I chuckle, smacking Coop on the ass through the covers. “Come on. You can’t be late.”

He moans and groans as he climbs out of our bed and stumbles into the bathroom. I pet Ralph, who wanted to go with him but settles for me. Then I head down to make him breakfast.

I retired from racing last year, happy to have this simple life in the country with the love of my life. We have a privacy here that’s unmatched. And while I miss racing, it was time to put it in my past.

I have everything I could ever want here.

Cooper comes down the hall, his feet bare, but he’s dressed in khaki pants and a button-down shirt. His hair is still wet when he sits down at the table, and I put a plate in front of him. “Thank you, husband.”

“You’re welcome, Dr. Adair.”

He squirms in his seat a little. “Don’t use that tone with me and say that name.” He swallows hard, his cheeks pink, just the way I love. “It’s too much, and I can’t be late.”

I sit down across from him with my own plate of food. “What? You have the urge to jump me right here?”

He glares at me playfully, picking up a piece of bacon and tearing it into three pieces, tossing two to Rosie and Ralph. “You know I do.”

I laugh. “Tonight.”

He nods. “Yes, tonight.”

We finish breakfast together, and he rushes to put his dishes in the sink before kissing me hard on the mouth. “You gonna come visit me for lunch today?”

“You know it.” I wrap my arms around him, not wanting to let him go.

“Mmm . . .” He kisses me softly, and my cock tents my joggers as I groan against his mouth. “Maybe we can have a little fun in my office instead of lunch.”

I chuckle, forcing myself to release him. “And risk seeing hangry Cooper? Not a chance.”

He shoves me playfully. “It’s not that bad.”

It really is.

I kiss him hard and smack him on the ass. “Get finished getting ready. I love you. I’ll see you at noon.”

“Fine,” he pouts playfully and takes off as I feed our three cats and two dogs.

Before he leaves, I remember his daily reminder. “Don’t bring your work home with you today!”

He only laughs as he pulls the front door open. “No promises!”

“The death of me, Cooper Adair,” I mumble as he closes the door behind him without another word.

The truth is, he can fill this house to the brim, and I wouldn’t care.

Because I have everything I wanted.

The perfect simple, private life.

And we are blissfully, unbelievably happy with that.
