“Aw, don’t you worry. We’re going to get you taken care of, big guy,” I coo, talking to a massive horse as I take care of his hoof. It’s been a dream, working at the ranch this summer.
I mean, don’t get me wrong, it’s a lot of work. But it’s been fantastic. Not to mention really getting to know Maverick’s mom and dad. They’re hardworking, amazing people, and his mom especially has gone to great lengths to make me feel right at home.
The woman can cook, that’s for sure.
I would have gained a hundred pounds in the past month if not for the grueling work balancing it out.
“There you are.” I look over at Maverick, who’s wearing a massive grin in his dirty jeans and a simple t-shirt. He’s wearing a ball cap to combat the summer sun, and his skin is tan.
“I know. Dinner is almost ready, but I had to make sure this guy was comfy before bedtime.”
“I’d expect nothing less from you.” He chuckles and walks over, petting the horse and looking so damn content. How many famous millionaire racers would use their summer to work on a ranch?
Not many, I’m sure. But he sure does seem happy here. I guess the fame and fortune really doesn’t mean all that much to Mav. But not racing?
I think that would kill my man.
Of course, thankfully, he doesn’t have to choose. We’re catching a plane to Florida tomorrow for his next race, and then we’ll be back Sunday night to continue work here. We’ve found the perfect balance.
And yes, there have been plenty of haters. But mostly, people have been gushing about Maverick’s impromptu declaration of love on television. People shared the clips like crazy.
And when Pheobe shared it on her social media with a heart and two hands up, that’s when her fans seemed to be onboard. Which, of course, in the end doesn’t really matter—we don’t need their permission—but it’s made things a little easier.
Jenny seemed pleased too, even though Mav was a little nervous she’d chew him out for doing it without her knowing. The woman actually squealed with happiness when she called him.
Didn’t know she did that.
But it was pretty cool. She handled all the social media flawlessly, without missing a beat, and really, everything has been calm. Maverick has apologized several times for being paranoid, but I get why he was. You never know what’s going to happen. People can be totally crazy.
I like that he’s not letting that fear hold him back any longer.
I do miss my animals at the shelter, but George and David have sent me several videos and pictures, showing me how many have been adopted too, so it’s made it a little easier.
I really like it here. I can see the appeal of a small town. The people are really friendly in town, even though I was a bit nervous to walk hand and hand with Maverick. Of course, he made it look easy.
And most of them are just happy fans who are thrilled to see him out and about. Really excited when he stops to chat with them too.
It’s strange dating a celebrity, but at the end of the day, he’s just Maverick to me. My boyfriend. And my best friend. My partner in this crazy life.
He wraps his big arms around me from behind, distracting me a little. But I gladly lean back into him and enjoy every second of having him hold me.
We’re going to make it. I have no doubts now.
I’ve never been this happy in my life, and I’m not sure I thought I’d ever have it. But now that I do, I’m never letting go.
