7. Chapter 7

Chapter seven

" N o she's not ready yet, Robert"

"Yes she is, Morana. We need to tell her the truth!"

Haven's parents were fighting, as they often did after she went to sleep.

"I say when she is ready Robert and it is not now!"

"Morana she is a teenager, she has a right to know her truth, her history!" Havens fathers voice lowered slightly, still with underlying hints of anger.

"Fine! Maybe it's me who's not ready yet," Her mother admitted, "I want her to enjoy life for just a little while longer, this life! She'll be starting high school soon, I don't see why this conversation can't wait until she's just a little older." Her mother paused, "I want her to have all the normal experiences. I want her to grow, get her license, go to prom, do all the things normal teenagers do." Her mothers voice carried an air of sadness as she spoke.

"But she is not a normal teenager my love." Haven's father said, tucking a strand of hair behind her mothers ear. Pulling her mom in close her father finished their conversation with,

"I fear we are running out of time"

Haven woke with a start. Lurching forward into a sitting position, she rubbed at her temples. Her parents often had conversations like that, unaware Haven had snuck downstairs to listen. She never understood what her parents meant, at one point she'd asked them about it. They had simply brushed her off and quit having late night conversations in the kitchen. After her father died, Haven tried again to get her mom to explain some of the things she'd heard. Whenever she asked it usually ended with the two of them fighting so she simply quit asking. Why it had been playing in her head while she was passed out, Haven had no idea.

Groaning as a headache pounded through her head, Haven looked around to see where she was. Deja vu hit her when the first thing she noticed was Roman sprawled about five feet from her. Except instead of them finding themselves on the forest floor this time they found themselves sprawled in some sort of meadow.

Immediately scrambling over to where Roman was, she gently shook him and said,

"Roman. Wake up!"

He did not stir.

"Roman" She said again, putting her fingers to his neck to check his pulse. Thankfully it beat strongly underneath her fingertips.

Groaning, Roman finally began to stir. Opening his eyes he said,

"Hello"

Haven threw her arms around him. She barely knew the guy but apparently getting lost in the woods and then somehow traveling through a strange archway to god only knows where, could bring two people closer.

"I'm okay" He mumbled.

Haven let go of him and helped him sit up.

"Do you have any idea where we are?" He asked.

Haven shook her head and looked around, they were definitely not in the dark North Carolina woods anymore. Haven and Roman were now surrounded by tall grasses and the occasional wildflower. Trees off to their right were the only hint as to where they might have come from. The fact that the trees appeared to be glowing was another issue entirely.

"Maybe we died and are now in heaven." Haven half joked.

Roman chuffed a laugh at her comment. Off in the distance Haven could see a very small log cabin sitting in a cluster of tall oak trees. Smoke was coming out of the chimney, there was a clothesline and a small garden next to it, along with a well worn path that led to what might be a road. Overall the cabin looked warm and cozy. Hopefully someone there could tell them what had happened and not murder them after they did it.

Haven got to her feet and then helped Roman up. Looking to the small cluster of trees besides them, now fading in their glow, she asked,

"What do you think happened? "

"Hell if I know" Roman responded.

Haven stretched her arms and legs out, testing how sturdy she felt on her feet. Overall, she felt like she had just stepped off of a ride at the fair, dizzy and kind of disoriented. The pounding headache certainly didn't help.

"So, should we go see if whoever lives there can help us or if they're just gonna cook us and eat us?" Roman asked

"Well it appears like we don't have much of a choice. I guess we're just going to have to hope they don't eat queer people" Haven responded

Roman laughed deep, the sound vibrating around them.

"That was a good one, H" He said, clapping her on the shoulder. His laughter was contagious, Haven found herself carrying a small laugh all the way up to the edge of the property that held the cabin.

They paused and quickly examined the structure before them. Now that they were closer, Haven could see a small porch and a few chickens scratching around in the side yard.

"H?" Haven asked, attempting to clear her nerves.

"Yeah, it's your new nickname."

Both appeared slightly nervous, Haven more so than Roman. His lack of nervousness set Haven a little on edge, she wondered why he didn't seem as tense as she was. Havens first guess was that Roman thought he could overpower whoever was inside the cabin if it came down to that. Her second guess was that she was hallucinating and Roman was something her mind had conjured to help her feel less alone. She liked the second answer a lot less than the first.

Attempting to shake off her nerves, Haven took a step forward.

"Let's do this" She said, more to herself than anyone else.

They walked in silence up to the large wood door. Haven took a deep breath and knocked. It took only a moment for someone to open the door.

"Hello" Said the older woman, "My name is Binah, Would you like to come in?"

Haven looked at Roman, he shrugged his shoulders.

"I promise not to harm you" The woman named Binah said.

"That's exactly what someone who wanted to harm us would say" Roman spoke under his breath, eliciting a nervous laugh from Haven.

Binah appeared harmless. A few small wrinkles littered her pale face and gray hair that appeared to have been brown at one time in her life was pulled in a low bun at the nape of her neck. She stood confident with her head held high even though she only came up to Havens shoulders. The older woman didn't exactly scream Ax Murderer but Haven supposed the best ones never did.

"Actually we just need some information if you don't mind," Haven spoke.

Binah nodded her head and asked,

"Of course, what do you need dear?"

Haven glanced at Roman before she said, "Well my friend and I were on a trip and we got lost. I was wondering if you could point us in the direction of Raleigh, North Carolina?" If they could figure out the direction of their state's capital then they should be fine, the town Haven lived in was not too far from there.

Realization seemed to dawn on Binah as she spoke,

"Oh well my dears you are very far from home aren't you"

Both Roman and Haven nodded .

"Alright well why don't you two go have a seat over there and I'll bring you out some tea and we can get this mess all cleared up" Binah pointed to some wrought iron chairs sitting around a small table at the edge of her garden. Roman spoke before Haven had a chance to,

"That sounds good, thank you." He nodded his head and moved to the garden chairs, pulling Haven along with him.

The pair sat down in the chairs and waited for their host to come out of her house. Leg bouncing, Haven took in the space around her. It was truly a cute little house, albeit a bit lonely out here with no neighbors. There were no other houses or buildings as far as the eye could see. Haven wondered where the road leading from the cabin would go if they were to follow it.

The door opened and Binah appeared carrying a tray with some cups and a pitcher full of tea.

"There we are," Bianh said, setting the tray down on the table. She poured Roman and Haven each a cup and handed it to them. Roman drank greedily from his, as did Haven, albeit a bit more hesitantly. The tea was iced and refreshing. Once they had each set their cups down Binah started,

"So you say you are from this, Raleigh?"

Both Roman and Haven nodded.

"Yes, it's in North Carolina," Roman said. Binah held a hand up to hush him before he could continue.

"Yes I know where that is." Binah paused before adding, "I'm afraid you are no longer in North Carolina. In fact, you are not even in that realm"
