Chapter 12
Chapter Twelve
Sin: Dad has threatened to sue us.
Lavender: Because you're saving his employees.
Sin: He says that working for him while running my own company was highly illegal.
Lavender: I hope he isn't trying to run for father of the year.
Sin: I doubt he will, but I'm sure he won't, but he'll try to steal the prize.
Lavender: What kind of relationship do you have with him?
Sin: That's something I've been asking myself the past few days. I just obeyed him because it seemed like something I had to do. Now, I understand why Paul just packed up and left without giving two shits. And it was later when Raffa, Barnaby, and I finally realized that we were pretending to be the dutiful sons while having our own companies.
Lavender: So did you three get along well?
Sin: Nope. Dad made us believe that we were each other's competition. We cared enough about each other but would still stab the other in the back if we had to.
Lavender: Very Survivor-like.
Sin: Something like that. When Paul moved away because he didn't like the way we treated McKay—the baby of the house—we began to see things from a different perspective.
Lavender: When did you start rebuilding the bridge between you guys?
Sin: Months ago. Around the time when Paul brought to our attention that Lou needed us. We didn't have to do much, since Henrik, her now fiancé, had everything under control. But that's when we started to realize that we weren't enemies, but brothers raised by a sociopath.
Lavender: I'm glad you three are now learning to be a family. Are they moving to Kentbury too?
Sin: Doubtful. I guess the first step would be to get them to take a day off from their workaholic ways and finally visit.
Lavender: Maybe you should get out of yours a little more often.
Sin: How's the camp going?
Lavender: Nice deflection. Also, I'm not part of the organization, just an employee who's making sure that the grounds are ready for the day campers.
Sin: Wait, it's not an overnight thing?
Lavender: Not for the first two weeks. The campers that'll be here for the second session will be overnight.
Sin: Ugh, I bet they made those decisions while I was away. Why the change, do you know?
Lavender: The cabins on the Harris property won't be ready until then. Paul and Kingston have been dealing with that part—at least that's what they're saying.
Sin: What does that mean?
Lavender: I think King is your brother's dirty little secret.
Sin: Paul and King? Nah, he's not gay.
Lavender: Bisexual?
Sin: Not that I know of.
Lavender: You two aren't close, so you wouldn't actually know, would you?
Sin: I guess not. Should I ask?
Lavender: Nope. I think you have to wait until he's comfortable enough to share it with you.
Sin: You just told me.
Lavender: Technically I didn't. I had no idea he was in the closet. I feel bad about telling you this, but glad I didn't mention it to anyone else.
Sin: So what do I do?
Lavender: Nothing. You just tell him that you support him and love him and . . . No, actually show him that he can trust you. That's how you start the conversation.
Sin: This family thing is hard.
Lavender: As hard as making deep connections with women before the first date?
Sin: Probably.
Lavender: You should try therapy.
Sin: I don't have time.
Lavender: Find the time. It'll help you with the emotional constipation—why didn't I think about suggesting it before?
Sin: I promise to look into it. For now I have to go into a meeting.
Lavender: TTYS
