Chapter 44

CHAPTER FORTY-FOUR

Adriana

The first thing I hear is a beeping noise. The second I hear is crying.

Why is someone crying?

I feel a squeeze of my hand and I try to open my eyes.

“Aahh.” comes from my lips as my eyes close tightly.

Was the sun in front of me? Sheesh that was fucking bright.

I hear a click and feet walking towards me.

“Sugar, can you try to open your eyes again?” I’m asked.

Cole. My Casanova. The man I love.

I slowly pry my eyes open, just in case the brightness is there again. When I realize it’s not, I open my eyes fully. Well, at least one is fully open. I can only see a little bit out of the other.

“Hey, Sugar,” Cole says with a sigh.

“Hey, Casanova.” I greet.

“Hi Adriana, I’m Dr. Fox. Do you know where you are?” she asks in a gentle voice.

“The hospital?” I say, questioning since I’m not completely sure.

“That’s right. Do you remember what led you to being here?” she inquires.

Oh shit! Dylan. The stadium.

My heart is beating faster as the memory of what happened comes forward. I guess they see that on the monitor.

“Baby, calm down. You are okay.” Cole tells me.

“I do.” I state.

“That’s good. You took some nasty blows to the head today. Are you okay with me talking in front of Mr. Evans about what is going on with you medically?” Dr. Fox asks.

“Yes.” I answer

“Okay, good, because I don’t think he’s leaving your side. You have a concussion, a broken hand and thumb, a fractured wrist, and I’m sure you know already that one eye is swollen shut. We checked to make sure there were no fractures to your face or damage to your eyesight. Everything looked clean, but we will know more when the swelling goes down and you can let us know. We are keeping you here overnight due to the concussion for observation. As long as you are okay, we will release you tomorrow. We will put the cast on you shortly.” Dr. Fox tells me.

“How long will I be in a cast?” I ask.

“Six to eight weeks. You will have to follow up with an ortho in four weeks.” She informs me.

“I can do that. Thank you.” I reply.

“I’m going to get out of your hair. Mr. Evans, when you hear a nurse coming and it’s after 11pm, hide in the bathroom. I didn’t tell you that, okay?” She says with a chuckle and a wink before she leaves.

“Do you need anything?” he asks.

“I’m okay now Co.” I tell him.

“I thought I lost you. When Heather called me asking if you were with me, I felt so lost.” he tells me.

“I’m sorry I went alone to the stadium. Honestly, I thought nothing would happen there.” I say.

“Baby, no. There isn’t a reason why you should be sorry. You were working. That fucking asshole is in the wrong.” He says.

“I know, but I still feel bad for going by myself.” I respond.

He shakes his head at me. I know what he’s trying to say, but I do still feel bad.

“The police need to take a statement from you. Do you want to wait till tomorrow or do it now?” he give me the option.

“Can I just do it now? I want to do it now to get it over with, so we won’t be bothered when we go home.” I ask.

He nods his head and pulls his cell phone out.

“I’m going to go right outside your room to call the officer, okay?”

“Okay.”

Cole leaves and comes back within two minutes.

“They will be here in a minute. They were in the lobby.” he lets me know.

I give him a small smile.

I’m not looking forward to this. I know Cole will want to be here and I need him with me, too, but I’m also worried about him. Shit, he’s also going to be so upset I didn’t tell him about Dylan asking me to the gala.

A knock on the door pulls me out of my thoughts.

“Adriana, I’m officer Rowe and this is Officer Collins. Mr. Evans.”

“Hello.” I greet.

“Can you tell us what happened to you today?” Officer Collins asks.

I tell them about how I went to the stadium and then what I remember from the first time I woke up until now. Cole is holding my good hand while his other is literally sinking into his own thigh.

I knew this was going to hurt him.

“Did you have many interactions with Mr. Crawford before? He stated you turned him down.” Officer Rowe inquires.

“Not too many, honestly. I met him at Cole’s house for like ten minutes. Then I saw him at the stadium when we would be there. There was karaoke with the team and the other day before the gala we had a mini event and he saw me go towards the maintenance closet. He helped me carry gloves for people to use to play catch. That’s when he asked me to be his date at the gala event.” I inform them.

“What?” comes from Cole.

“I didn’t tell you because he was gracious when I told him I had a date and it was my boyfriend. He asked if it was serious and I said it was newish. He told me he hoped it worked out, and that was that. Then the flowers and note happened, and I forgot all about it since I automatically assumed it was Toby.” I tell him.

“Guess it really wasn’t him.” Cole says.

“I guess not.”

The hurt in Cole’s eyes makes me want to cry. I didn’t tell him because I didn't want the team being all wonky from it. He would have said something. But Dylan didn’t know at the time and he was nice enough about it. I truly didn’t even think anything of it.

“Can I assume you will press charges?” Officer Collins inquires.

“Yes. We can’t allow him to do this to anyone else. Especially from the sound of it, Dylan already has.” I agree.

“Yeah, you are correct. Apparently, he left where he was because of a similar incident. Only difference is that he stalked her and threatened her. She wanted to get the police involved. That is why he wanted to leave his team. I can’t go into more details, but just so you know, you are doing the right thing,” Officer Rowe tells us.

Wow. What a horrible human being.

“Thank you. I appreciate that.” I let them know.

“If we need anything else, we will call you. Someone will be in contact after you are home, depending on their story and the security footage from the stadium. Hope you get some rest.”

And with that, they leave. Now it’s just us.

I’m so scared this is going to break us. I can’t lose him.

“I’m sorry.” I squeak out.

Cole gets up from his chair and taps my leg for me to move it over. This man comes to lie down with me. He is very careful not to move me around, but he can get me to cuddle into him as best I can in a hospital bed. He takes hold of my good hand and interlocks our fingers.

“Baby, am I happy you didn’t tell me about Crawford? Of course not. But it’s not your fault. He made this decision. You didn’t ask for this to happen to you. If anything, I feel bad because it feels like it’s my fault. If I hadn’t pursued you, maybe this wouldn’t have happened,” he tells me.

“I think if I were to have shot him down regardless, it might have happened. Even if there was no you and me, my answer to him would have been the same. Yes, you pursued me. But that showed me who you were and how much you cared and felt, Casanova. That was a huge reason why I opened up myself to you.” I say.

“I thought I lost you tonight. You were just laying there. I was ready to burn the stadium and the world down.”

“Cole.” I chastise him.

“As long as your heart is safe, beating, and happy, that means mine is too, because you carry my heart with you wherever you go. Adriana Jade Johnson, if you couldn’t tell, I’m utterly in love with you. Losing you would be the worst thing in this world. I don’t live if you don’t,” he says with conviction.

This man has finally rendered me speechless.
