Chapter 15

"How do you want to start?" I ask, setting my bag down on the sofa in the back of Studio 1. "We could lay down what we came up with yesterday, to start?"

Sebastian looks a little confused, staring at all the knobs and dials on the mixing board. Ah, so he's not super technical then.

I giggle at him as I switch on the computer.

"This is a good place to start," I whisper.

"Do you know how to do all this?" He asks me, a surprised note in his voice.

"Enough to get us through decently, as long as you're not expecting it to be some avant garde techno piece. I took a few music tech classes in college."

He huffs, and I maybe think he's impressed?

I sit down at one of the producer's chairs, plugging in a flash drive to the computer and setting up a new project on the software.

"Can you hop in the sound booth so I can check all the hook ups?" I ask Sebastian, taking charge of the studio.

He follows my orders so nicely, going through each step I ask before joining me at the desk again.

"I think there's a cable disconnected under the desk." I move to climb under, but Sebastian stops me.

"Don't worry, I can do it." He crawls under before I can stop him. "What am I looking for, boss?"

I laugh at the sight of this massive Monster male crawling under a desk and calling me boss.

"OK, I'll bite. There's a MIDI connector that needs to go into a port labeled 2A. You got that?"

"I've found the port." He grunts, shifting around a bit, "If I was a MIDI cable, what exactly would I look like?"

Oh my God, the male is useless… I crawl under the desk to do it for him.

"Here!" I exclaim, finding the MIDI cable easily. "Just plug that into the port for me, please."

I only ask him because he's closer. But I stay to watch him, making sure that he doesn't fuck it up somehow. Once it's all connected, he moves to get up, scooching back a bit and moving to stand.

A loud crack sounds, and I realize too late that it's his head hitting the table. I instantly move to make sure he's OK. I shift closer as he sits back on his ass. I push his hand out of the way and lean forward, examining where he hit.

"Well, you didn't break skin, at least." I tell him, gently brushing the reddening spot with my thumb. "You're really not good at the whole producing stuff, huh?"

He chuckles, shaking his head. I grip his chin, stopping him.

"Hey, no moving for a sec. Let's make sure you're OK first."

I run through a few concussion tests before I make the assessment that he's alright. It's one very useful skill that I picked up from dance.

I hold his face gently, and I can't help but laugh at the situation. He starts to laugh with me, and before I know it we're both tearing up with laughter.

My eyes lock with his and all of a sudden, I'm not laughing anymore. My breathing hitches, my hands still on his face. His face, that's so close to mine. I trace my finger over the scales on his cheekbone. It's even more interesting than I remember.

Sebastian reaches behind me, stroking the hair down my back gently. I shift even closer still, our breath mixing now. I could lean that extra inch or two forward, I could do it. His hand fists in my hair, his grip tightening slightly. I look at his eyes, but they're focused on my lips as he leans forward.

I turn my head quickly, pushing away and standing up. I try to hide my heaving breaths as I brush my jeans off.

"God, it's really dusty under there." I pick off a piece of lint from my t-shirt. "You'd think it wouldn't have gotten like that so quickly. It's only been like a few weeks since they built the damn place."

I turn around, moving to the computer to check our cable worked the way I thought it would. Sebastian has stood up now, his grumpy demeanor back in place.

"You know, I'm going to go use the restroom. I'll be back in a few." He says, not looking at me. Getting up and leaving the room quickly.

I let out a huge sigh and put my head in my hands. What is wrong with me? My phone dings with a text from Frank:

Date tomorrow. It's another awards show, red carpet. Sebastian's nominated for his last album. Car will pick you up at 5 pm.

Well, that puts things right back into perspective for me. This whole thing me and Sebastian have is fake, and I'm letting it get to my head. Letting him kiss me would have been a mistake.

When he comes back, I act super professional. I show him how to take the recordings and then I hop into the sound booth and lay down the piano and some of my vocals.

We switch places and then I do the same for him. Afterwards, I lay it all together as Sebastian sits on the couch and listens. We make sure not to touch or go near one another for the rest of the session.
