Chapter 35

Trevor bristledas he watched Guy stalk toward them. Based on the veins popping out at Guy’s temples, he wasn’t very happy.

The man paused in front of them, his hands fisted at his side.

Despite everything that happened between Trevor and Sadie, he still found himself nudging his way in front of her as a protective measure.

“I happened to be driving past and saw you guys standing out here,” he muttered with a half eye roll. “How fortuitous.”

“What do you want, Guy?” Trevor asked.

“I want you to stop hanging out with my girlfriend.” Guy sneered as he said the words. “She’s never going to remember me if she’s always with you.”

“That’s not your choice,” Trevor said. “I’m not forcing her to hang out with me. In fact, she hired me to keep her safe. I’m only doing my job.”

“There’s something about you I don’t like.” Guy jabbed his finger into Trevor’s chest.

Trevor’s muscles tightened even more. “You don’t want to do that.”

“Maybe I do.”

“You two!” Sadie’s voice cut through the tension of the moment. “I’m perfectly capable of speaking for myself.”

They both turned toward her.

She turned toward Guy first. “Everything Trevor said is correct. He’s simply someone I hired, and that’s it.”

Trevor flushed. Maybe Sadie had said those words on purpose, wanting to put him in his place. He couldn’t blame her for that, but he had to admit her statement still hurt.

“Until I can figure out what’s going on in my life, I’m keeping my distance from everybody. That includes you two. Things aren’t adding up.” She crossed her arms and looked back at Guy again. “Maybe you can tell me why.”

Guy’s eyes narrowed. “What do you mean by that?”

“I mean, there were things going on in my life that I’m not comfortable with, and I’m trying to get to the bottom of it. Is there anything you can tell me about my life that might help me? And be honest. I’ll eventually find out if you’re lying to me.”

A puzzled look crossed his face, and he shook his head. “I don’t know anything important. I just know we enjoyed going to dinner together.”

“Just dinner?” Sadie asked.

Trevor listened carefully, curious as to where this was going.

“Well, yeah. Dinner.” Guy shrugged.

Sadie’s eyes narrowed. “Were we really even dating?”

“I mean, we went out several times.” An edge of hurt crept into his voice.

“But we weren’t serious, were we?”

He ran a hand over his face. “Depends on what you mean by serious.”

A better picture formed in Trevor’s mind as he let Sadie do the talking.

He hadn’t liked this guy from the start. Now he knew why.

“You wanted us to be more serious, and when you heard about my accident you decided to move in,” Sadie said. “Then when you found out I didn’t have my memories, you decided to plant the idea in my head that we were a couple. I’m not denying that we may have gone out to eat, but our relationship is not what you’re presenting it to be. We were friends.”

“It’s not like that. Not really.” Guy frowned and let out a long breath.

“Then what is it like? Really?”

“I like you. If all this hadn’t happened, I think we would have moved forward into something more serious and committed.”

She shook her head and let out a sardonic chuckle. “You were trying to take advantage of me after my accident. That’s despicable.”

He raked a hand through his hair, the tension inside him clearly mounting with each tidbit of truth that emerged.

“It’s not like that,” he repeated again.

Sadie stepped closer. “What else can you tell me? Did I do anything suspicious in the week before my accident?”

“You were just asking a lot of questions about the company,” he said. “How it operated. Who did what. I wondered if some of your number crunching wasn’t adding up.”

“Did I say that?” Sadie asked.

He shook his head. “I was reading between the lines.”

“Did you tell her anything?” Trevor asked. “Anything that caught her interest?”

“I don’t think so. She almost looked disappointed. But there were a million other things I wanted to talk about—like the two of us and our future together.”

Trevor was tired of listening to this guy talk. He stepped closer.

“It’s time for you to get to your doctor’s appointment,” he reminded Sadie.

Visible relief washed over her features. “Okay then. I’ve got to go. I’ll see you around, Guy. Please don’t confront me anymore about this.”

With those words, they climbed back into Trevor’s truck and took off for the hospital.

Sadie’s thoughts raced.

Thank goodness, she’d put everything together. There had just been something about that whole situation with Guy that hadn’t rung true with her.

Now she knew.

Guy wanted there to be something more between them than what was actually present. The fact he’d lied to her in order to work out things to his advantage only upset her more.

The thing was, Guy didn’t even seem like her type. So why had she gone out on several dates with him?

She wasn’t sure exactly how to put everything together.

As Trevor glanced at her from the driver’s seat, her wrath toward Guy suddenly turned back onto Trevor.

Trevor hadn’t been much better. He’d also been deceiving her about their past relationship. Guy, she had expected it from. Trevor . . . she’d thought she could trust him.

However, it also appeared that Sadie had been deceiving a lot of people as well.

Nothing made sense right now. Sadie couldn’t be self-righteous when she was doing the same things as those she was upset with.

But she would like to think she had a better reason for it. Would like to think she hadn’t been working for a crime boss.

She remained quiet for the rest of the ride, staring out the window until they reached the hospital.

As they walked inside, memories of when Sadie had last been here filled her mind. She’d felt so uncertain. So confused. So hopeless, really.

It had only been a couple of days and, honestly, things still didn’t make much sense.

She needed her memories back. She wished there was something she could do to accelerate this whole process. But it wasn’t that easy.

They headed up the elevator to the third floor, and Sadie braced herself for her meeting with Dr. Conroy, praying for a positive report.
