Chapter 34

Trevor watched Sadie’s face.

She didn’t like that last statement.

She didn’t see herself as someone who could be a bad guy—which was a good thing.

Trevor didn’t want to believe that either. But he had to face the truth. Trying to skirt around reality wouldn’t do him any good. In fact, it could end up getting him killed.

He turned back to her, ready to tell her more. “The truth is, we believe you have an affiliation with Frederick Moreau.”

“Who is Frederick Moreau?” She blinked in confusion.

“He’s a bad person, to put it lightly. Involved in human trafficking, arms dealing, and a host of other illegal and dangerous activities.”

“And why would you believe I’m affiliated with him?”

“You were seen meeting with one of his guys. Frederick himself is in prison, but he still has plenty of minions out there willing to do his bidding. He’s not very happy with me, to say the least. I’m the one who helped bring him down. Maybe you work for him.”

Sadie stared at him, disbelief in her eyes. It was a lot to process. He knew that.

And it sounded far-fetched. Except, in his world, it wasn’t.

Maybe not in Sadie’s world either.

“Why would I work for a man like that?” she finally asked.

“There’s a chance you were sent to find out information on me for what could ultimately lead to my downfall. Then the hit-and-run happened before you could complete your mission. I’m still not sure who’s responsible for that, however. Or why. There are lots of questions.”

She shook her head, rubbing the skin between her eyes. “I would never betray someone like that.”

His heart softened a moment. “I would like to believe that also. But with your memory loss . . . anything is possible.”

“Even with my memory loss, don’t you think I’d know deep down if I’m capable of that? I feel like I still know who I am on the inside even if I don’t remember all the details of my life.”

“I don’t know what to tell you.” Trevor searched for the right words to say, but there were none for a situation like this. There had been too many lies. Too much deceit.

Too much evil.

They stood there in silence a moment, tension crackling between them.

Finally, Sadie looked back at him. “You said the two of us went on several dates? So you did know me.”

His jaw tightened at the memories, at the subtle hurt in her voice. “I always try to remain carefully guarded. Now, the first time I actually let down my guard, it was a major mistake. It won’t happen again.”

Something flashed in her eyes. Was that regret? Disappointment? Maybe even hurt.

Trevor was probably just seeing what he wanted to see.

What he and Sadie had between them wasn’t real, and the sooner he came to terms with that, the better.

* * *

Sadie’s thoughts continued to race through everything she’d just learned.

She couldn’t believe Trevor had known all this and not shared it with her.

Then again, if she truly was working for a crime lord, she supposed she understood why he hadn’t.

Everything inside her told her that she wouldn’t intentionally hurt anyone.

But how was she to know what was true and what wasn’t true? Could her gut feelings really be trusted? She’d like to think so. But any sense of balance she’d begun to feel had been turned upside down.

Then there were those flashes of memory that had hit her when she had jumped out of that car.

Memories of meeting with a stranger in the woods. Whispering to him.

Seeing him get upset.

Then he’d pushed her.

She’d pushed him back.

Then his face came into view.

It was the dead man, the one who’d died only hours before she’d been hit by that car.

She glanced back up at Trevor. “Did I kill that man?”

Trevor hesitated before shrugging. “If you asked me a day ago, I would have said no. But right now, I have to admit I have no idea. You were living a double life. Having meetings in the middle of the night. Associated with a crime boss. Yet, by day you worked for an elevator company and were dating Guy Merchant. Nothing really makes sense to me right now either.”

Sadie heard the pain in his voice and wished she could take it away. But she couldn’t. That hurt might very well be for a good reason.

What if she wasn’t the person she’d assumed she was? What if she’d killed that man who had been found dead near town? Then what if someone she was working for had tried to kill her to cover it all up?

It all seemed so far-fetched.

But this was the reality of her life right now. She needed to figure out how she would proceed.

Before they could talk any longer, a car pulled up and parked behind them.

Trevor reached for his gun as he turned to the vehicle, clearly bracing for a fight.
