8. Becca

Chapter 8

Becca

On the way back to the hotel, I think over Davi's confession, and I won't lie and say it didn't make me feel good, but this is all so fast. I need to think. I can't do that when he's around. He's far too distracting and our chemistry is like a nuclear reactor gone haywire. We're exploding right and left and in and out. It's both wonderous and dangerous.

Davi opens the door and lets me enter first. There's a woman sitting on the sofa, and she stands as we enter.

"I need to talk to you… Davi."

"Hi Adriana, nice to see you. Adriana, this is Becca. Becca, this is Adriana Cruz, my publicist. Yes, Adriana, we had a wonderful day. How about you?" Davi rolls his eyes at the woman as if she's interrupting us. "Really, Adriana, you need to do more introductions instead of just jumping the gun to your needs… in my home, no less."

Adriana huffs, and I'm nervous watching them interact. She looks at me like she's a jaguar and I'm a tiny mouse. She says through gritted teeth. "Hello, Becca. I need to talk to Davi."

"You can say whatever you want in front of Becca."

The woman moans. "Not again, Davi."

Her tone makes me pause, and I turn to him. "What does she mean?"

Davi glares at Adriana and says, "She doesn't mean anything."

The other woman scoffs and crosses her arms. "Davi has a certain type. Vulnerable women who can't and won't be permanent in his life."

My gut rolls as if it's been punched in the stomach.

"Stop." Davi has never been so harsh in all the times I've met him. He moves in front of me as if he's physically going to protect me from this person, but it's too late. I already heard what she has to say.

"I leave on Friday." I move around Davi and try to let the woman know she has nothing to worry about. "I won't be a problem."

"Well, it won't come soon enough. Davi needs to concentrate on getting ready for his next tournament. He's only one win away from getting the championship, and that will make or break his whole career."

I look back at Davi, and it's easy to see the distraction I'm creating for him. He's worked hard, and if he's only one win away, then all of this is a horrible idea. I can't be the reason he doesn't achieve his dream.

"Right. Um, okay. I think it's time I leave," I say, keeping my emotions balled up when they're ready to unravel like a ball of yarn.

Adriana looks taken aback for a second, then nods. "At least smart, if you're not pretty."

"Adriana, you need to leave." Davi's voice is cold and chilling as he glares at the other woman. It takes me off guard and like I'm a ghost in the room.

"Don't go ruining your career over a sweet piece of ass. You won't be on top forever. Don't allow a weekend fuck to take away your dream."

The words slice deeper into my gut as I worry about Davi's dream being destroyed because of me.

"Get out! Get out!" Davi's sharp repeat of the room chases me back to the bedroom and I slam the door shut.

I feel like running, but I know how that makes the other person feel. I've been ghosted and I don't want to do that to him.

But I don't think I can stay and know that I may be the reason he doesn't reach his dream.

I care about him and his dreams.

I care about him.

Fuck… I love him.
