Chapter 37

Living with Danika was amazing. The number of times he woke in a cold sweat had reduced significantly. There were still times he needed to workout hard either right before leaving the base or once he got home, and Danika understood.

It seemed like her work was going well. She was earning money and saving it, planning on buying a car, maybe. She knew it would be expensive, but she was beginning to get annoyed with taking the bus. A few times, the bus schedule had been messed up, and she had to pay for a shared ride. She'd figured out that too many shared rides would cost almost as much as a car payment.

He stepped into the house, ready for a good weekend with Danika. She had a smile on her face and excitement shining in her eyes. They were planning on going to the beach in the morning with his team to have fun, maybe playing some volleyball or just hanging out.

"Hey, you look happy," Danika said.

He nodded. "I am."

"I chatted with Thario on my way home from work. He says physical therapy is getting harder now that he has to work on walking. He's getting there, though."

"Good. I'm glad you two can chat."

"He says he's thinking about adopting me as his sister."

Sharp burst out laughing. "What? He's not really, is he?"

"Well, he said that I'm like a sister. He's glad he has someone to talk to and doesn't want you to get jealous."

"I know he respects both of us, and you are solid. But if he wants to think of you as his sister, I'm all for it. It makes me feel good for him. I hate that he was injured." His gaze strayed away as thoughts filled his mind.

Danika grunted. "That's a huge frown. Is everything okay?"

"Yeah, I was just thinking about Jinx. His parents still haven't let him go, and the doctors say his brain isn't working. I hate that for him."

"Could there be some miracle? Like, could he wake up?"

Sharp shook his head. "I don't think so. I just heard from one of the guys that he's not ever going to recover. It makes me sad. I know Jinx would never want to be kept like this. He was a warrior. I need to go visit his parents, but it's hard. I saw them before I left for overseas. Even then, it wasn't looking good for him."

"I'll go with you when you're ready."

"It will be difficult. You don't have to."

"If we're together, this is going to be for better or worse. Your worst can be really bad, but that doesn't mean I can't stand by your side and support you."

His heart picked up speed as her words raced through his mind. He moved closer to her and held her shoulders. "If ever at any point I'm in that situation?—"

"You won't be. "

He nodded. "I know. But if I am, you have to let me go. I don't want to be like that."

She cupped his cheeks just as his phone buzzed. It wasn't the normal buzz. Instead, it was the one that indicated he had to go back to work.

He closed his eyes as duty took over, ripping him away from his wants and needs. He blew out a breath and opened his eyes. Danika was still there, holding his face.

"You have my word that I would never leave you like that. Now, what was that buzz on your phone about?"

He pulled her into a hug and held on, drinking in the feel of her. He didn't want to let go, but he had no choice. "I have to go." He checked the message, seeing he had two hours. It wasn't enough time to do more than grab some food and head out.

"Go? As in, you're going back to work?"

"Yes. We'll most likely hop on a plane and fly somewhere to take care of whatever problem that surfaced."

Fear flashed over her face, but she schooled her features fast. "I'll be here when you get home."

He knew she would. She wouldn't run off with someone else while he was taking care of business. Danika was his, and he would never do anything to damage the trust she had in him.

His lips brushed gently over hers as all the emotions he felt for her poured through him. "I'll be home when we're done. I love you. Stay safe while I'm gone."

"I will. You should eat before you go. Can I do anything else for you?"

He shook his head. "No, just be you. You're perfect the way you are."

Leaving on a mission had him nervous for more than one reason. This was his first mission with his new team. It was also the first time he'd been out with a group since the explosion had killed half his team. The likelihood of something like that happening again was very low, but still, the terrible thoughts rose, and pushing them away wasn't easy. He couldn't allow the past to invade his mind because it would only make him screw up. Being solid for this team was his only option. If he couldn't do this, his career would be over, and that wasn't something he was ready to face.
