Another Epilogue
Eve
I yawn for the thousandth time, still completely transfixed on seeing Miss Snowflake with her kittens. She’s doing a great job, nursing her five babies like a pro. I had texted Dr. Boldman earlier when we realized she was in labor and sent a few photos throughout the evening. Since everything went well, Dr. Boldman didn’t feel the need to make a house call and will see them all at their first vet appointment in six weeks.
“I know she just gave birth, but I’m already a little sad at having to give these babies up in eight weeks.” Reaching in, I run a gentle hand over Miss Snowflake’s head, the sound of her purring filling the room.
John lifts his shoulders. “So, let’s keep them.”
My eyes widen. “Are you crazy? Keep five kittens? What am I going to do with six cats?” I ask, starting to get a little panicky at the thought.
“Seven. I don’t think I’ll get Biggie back to his house at this point,” he states, nodding to where his cat lies beside the box, as if protecting his family.
“Seven,” I repeat, my brain spinning.
“But you won’t be alone, Eve. I’ll help you, and maybe someday, when the time is right, we’ll all share one big house together.”
Warmth spreads across my chest. “Really?”
“Yes. Someday,” he says, leaning forward and brushing his lips across mine. “Ready for bed?”
“I suppose.”
He helps me stand and keeps my hand tucked firmly in his as he leads me out of the guest bedroom and into mine across the hall. Since we’re already ready for bed, we slip beneath the warm covers and burrow together. John yawns and mutters, “Congratulations, Grandma.”
I snort and shake my head. “I’m not sure I like the sound of that. Most people are actual mothers before they get labeled a grandma.”
“Well, we can work on that too,” he says sleepily.
“Someday,” I reply, placing a kiss on his lips and curling into his embrace.
He’s out quickly, having worked at the hospital all day, only to come home and sit with me while Snowflake delivered her kittens. But one thing I know about John, he never wavers. He was by my side all night because he knew it was important to me. He’s steadfast in everything he does, calm and collected in times I feel frazzled. He’s strong when I need it and is usually right by my side every step of life’s journey, even after only two months since I stormed next door and demanded kitten support.
Now, here we are.
Together again.
I fall fast asleep with a smile on my face and a heart full of love.
