CHAPTER 5

Cameron

"Damn it. I told him not to hit you on the right side of your head," my manager grumbled. "Now the wound is open again."

"Don't worry. The cutman took care of it. The bleeding has stopped," I said.

"For now, but we need that wound healed fully, and you have only four days to do so. If you open it up again, you know what's going to happen. Even if you are cleared to fight, he's going to hit you again and again on that spot until you can't take it anymore," he warned.

"I'm good. It will be healed."

He huffed. "I still can't believe you didn't call me. We could have a doctor look at it right away."

"I had a doctor look at it," I said.

"When?" he asked.

"Yesterday. Immediately after I was cut."

"How exactly did that happen?" he questioned.

"I told you. I cut it on a piece of wood," I stated, leaving out most of the facts.

"No more construction work until after the fight. And by the way, you're down another pound. 163. You need to eat more. A lot more. Do I need to come by with dinner for you?" he offered.

"No. I'm good. I'm stopping for a second breakfast on my way home, and then have ordered two dinners for later."

"You don't have a date, do you?" he glared.

"I know better. Nothing is going to distract me," I stated.

"Yet, you went to a doctor that I don't know and just because you are saying that you're okay, you expect me to take your word for it," he said.

"Dr. Swoony looked it over very closely. If she thought there was anything to be concerned about, she would've insisted on bringing me to the hospital," I said.

"Dr. Swoony?"

"Yes. Dr. Sydney Swoony," I said.

His eyes widened. "Sydney Swoony? Are you sure that is her name?"

"I got hit in the head, but not that hard. Yes, I'm sure," I stated firmly.

He shook his head. "Cameron, I don't know about you. I think you got hit a lot harder than you are making it out to be. And you claim that you are not dating but I'm not buying that either. I am going to be outside the ring, it will be you fighting there. You got to get serious about it. Don't let her distract you."

"She's not. She treated my injury. That's it," I stated.

"Sure. You're telling me that you went to a vet to be treated instead of one of our doctors? That doesn't make any sense. And if you think it does, then maybe you should back out of the fight now," he stated.

"Vet? What vet?" I asked.

"Sydney Swoony. She's a vet. I know because my wife takes our ten-year-old Pomeranian to her clinic. Granted, Sydney is an excellent vet, but still a vet. I have no idea why you let her treat your head injury," he sighed in disbelief.

A vet ?

This had to be wrong. She never mentioned she was a vet. In fact, she repeatedly mentioned that she was a doctor. Never asked what kind, but I assumed she was one who treated humans.

Oh, I'm a fucking idiot .

I had never ever gone to a physician who was not on my manager's list. Why the hell was I doing so now? Yes, she was insistent, but I never allowed anyone to push me around, why did I cave in now?

Because she was stunning, and when she tried to intimidate me, it only made her sexier.

I laughed. "The saying is right. Don't assume. I really made an ass out of myself."

"No. You were blinded by the blonde. I know the feeling. My wife got to me the same way. Well, not exactly, but I was definitely blinded by the blonde. And her smile. Connie has the sweetest smile, and when she uses it, I can't refuse her. Hence why I walk that damn small dog around the neighborhood when I know everyone is laughing," he snorted.

"Guess I can count myself lucky. I only got a scar, not a dog," I teased.

"We will see."

"Trust me, I'm not about to let any woman get in the way of winning that title," I stated honestly.

"Have you spoken to her again?" he asked.

"What does that have to do with anything?"

"I take that as a yes. And do you plan on seeing her again?" he questioned.

"Not until after the fight," I stated.

"Because you know if you do, you won't be able to stop thinking about her. And before you deny it, I can tell just by your reaction. You look like you want to knock me out."

Tempted.

" I wouldn't do that. I need you. At least for a few more days," I joked.

"Glad you still have your sense of humor. Just take my advice. Explain to her what is on the line. She's a bright woman. She will understand why the two of you shouldn't talk until after the match."

"Yeah. About that. I haven't told her about it," I said.

"Why?"

"She made it clear that she doesn't like violence. When she finds out what I do, she won't want to date me," I said.

"So why not tell her now?" he asked.

Because I want to see her again.

"There is a fight I need to focus on. I'll tell her after."

"Then are you ready to get back to work? You have a few more hours of training to go," he said.

I nodded. A few good hits to the head might just be what I needed to stop thinking about Sydney.
