6. Chapter Four

Chapter Four

T en minutes later, Izzy pulled into the driveway of a white house with green shutters. It had a picket fence around it and flower beds in the yard. The flowers were starting to succumb to the cooler weather.

A walkway at the side of the house led to the garage and the small apartment above. Izzy climbed the steps and knocked on the door.

He didn't have to wait long before Ulises stood in the opening. His sweet smile greeted Izzy, as it always did.

"Hi, Daddy."

"Hello, Ulises." Izzy would have called him boy under normal circumstances.

Ulises's eyebrows drew together, and he stiffened just enough for Izzy’s protective instincts to kick in. "Do you want to come in, or…?"

Yep, he knew something wasn't right.

Izzy nodded and fought against doing the thing his heart told him to. Everything in him screamed for him to comfort Ulises. His dragon called him his mate. It didn’t seem to matter that they weren’t fated. He wanted to take him to bed, fuck him and bite him to secure the bond.

And everything about the instinct made him want to run away in fear. It all collided inside Izzy at once, creating chaos.

Ulises didn't let him get very far. He wrung his hands together and bit his lip. Before he made a decision about whatever was rolling around in his pretty head, Izzy handed him the box of cookies.

"I know you like pumpkin spice."

Ulises took the box with a smile. He opened it, peering inside before closing it again. "Thank you."

The apartment had a small kitchen area, but it had everything Ulises needed, including a small oven and refrigerator. It was the perfect size for a regular-sized person. But the kitchen—-the whole damned apartment—made Izzy feel like a giant, so he sat at the table separating the living room from the kitchen.

Ulises arranged the cookies on a small plate in a nervous way that was new. "I know you're going to tell me we're breaking up."

Izzy hadn't expected the boldness. Ulises was usually shy and didn't say very much. All they did was fuck like rabbits whenever they saw each other. They hadn’t had any deep conversations. "We're not really together, honey. It was just messing around."

Ulises stiffened as he turned and set the plate of cookies in the center of the table. He crossed his arms over his chest and leaned against the counter as far away from Izzy as possible. "Was? Not is?"

"I'll fuck you one more time, if that's what you want." Izzy wanted it. Sex with Ulises had been the best he'd ever had, and he'd had a lot of guys. Izzy wouldn't have stopped, but feelings had gotten in the way.

Ulises shook his head, averting his gaze. "You say it like you're doing me a favor."

"Aren't I?" That one question was a low blow and Izzy knew it.

If Izzy had slapped Ulises, he would have gotten less of a response. Ulises flinched and then touched his neck where the lump used to be. It wasn't there anymore. Between Easton, who was a damn good scientist, and the medication, it wasn’t visible anymore. It was as if it hadn’t been there at all, even though it was inside him still.

"Was I just a pity fuck to you?"

Izzy could go for the jugular and answer with a lie. In doing so he would make it so Ulises would never talk to him again. But what would it really prove, beyond the fact that Izzy was an asshole. That much wasn't in question but he didn't need to lie to Ulises and hurt him unnecessarily. "It was never that. I just don't get serious. You know that."

"I believe your earlier implication." Ulises walked over to the door and opened it. "Thanks for the cookies."

Izzy sighed and stood. "I didn't want to hurt you."

Ulises gestured toward the stoop. "You need to leave. I have somewhere to be."

Like hell. Ulises was a cute little liar. The blush told Izzy that much. "Where do you have to be?"

Ulises averted his gaze. "I have a doctor's appointment."

So the reason for the blush wasn't because he was lying. It was because he still believed Izzy's fucking lie.

Izzy raised his hand to touch Ulises’ cheek, but Ulises pulled away, letting go of the door and taking a giant step back.

Izzy held up his hands as if he were under arrest. "Sorry."

"Are we breaking up or not, Izzy?"

"We shouldn't fuck anymore."

"Then get out." As soon as Izzy was on the stoop, Ulises narrowed his eyes. "Everyone tried to tell me about you but I didn't listen."

"You should have, honey."

"You're a jerk. And a…a…great big bag of dicks." And with that, Ulises slammed the door in Izzy's face.

Izzy shook his head. "'A great big bag of dicks'?"

"Shut up, jerk face." Ulises yelled through the door and then Izzy heard the lock click into place.

That had gone better than expected. He’d expected Ulises to cry but no tears had come. Izzy wanted to feel good about that but couldn't muster up the vibes. As he got further away, his stomach clenched.

He'd never once regretted ending it with someone…until Ulises.
