49. Chapter 49

Hydessa

S itting down at my desk, I look at the investigation wall. A sense of satisfaction fills me that all those women got the justice they deserved, that their stories weren't simply forgotten because they had no one who cared about them.

I cared. My men, they cared.

Link and Jonah had gone with Eli to fill in all the missing details on what the Sheriff and Chester had been doing. Which now also meant that there would be a job opening in the Amity Island police station that the guys had made it clear they wanted me to fill.

This island, this community, it feels like home. Strangely enough it had felt like home the moment I got here. Until now I hadn't believed in fate or destiny, but now everything feels like it was meant to be.

I would miss living with my family. But I did love this house, their house as it turned out.

I just hope Seanna can understand why I'm staying here.

Picking up my phone I pull up her number and hit the call button. The phone rings a few times before it's answered, I've just opened my mouth to speak first when she interrupts me. "Hey, sis."

My heart stops. My breath catches in my lungs and the blood in my veins turns to ice.

"Hey, sis," I respond to her softly.

I close my eyes, taking a deep breath. I can't hear anything except her voice.

"How's the investigation going?" she asks cheerfully, but I can hear the tension beneath her tone.

"We got the bad guys, we always get them, remember," I say softly and she hums. I hear her shift slightly and there's a catch in her breath.

"I'm glad. I have to go, sis," she says. I can hear the sadness creeping into her voice and it takes everything inside me not to cry.

"I love you, Seanna," I say quickly, my voice filled with emotion. I need her to know that.

"Love you too," she responds softly before the call disconnects.

I feel the tears on my cheeks as I quickly pull up the next contact in my phone, my fingers trembling.

"Hey munchkin, we were just–" Papa's voice comes on the phone.

"Seanna's been taken," I interrupt, closing my eyes to try to stop the world from spinning.

She hands me back the phone, smiling that fake smile she has perfected so well.

I can see past it though, she can't hide from me.

Humming I shove the phone into the pocket of my utility pants. She growls at me when I grab her free arm, securing it once more to the chain attached to the bed. She tries a well placed swipe with her claws at the mask on my face, but I'm out of reach before it lands.

"I'm not stupid," I say simply, my voice distorted by my mask. "Don't worry, S, you'll be punished for that."

She screams in frustration as I turn and walk out of the room, closing the door and bolting it behind me.

Her screams echo through the dimly lit hallway as I walk away, each note filled with a mixture of rage and desperation. I ignore them, knowing she'll soon tire herself out. My mind races, but my steps are steady as I make my way through the old house.

Once I'm in the main room and a good distance from her, I pull the mask from my face. Getting my phone out, I bring up the contact I need. It's pretty much the only one that gets called from this burner phone. He answers almost immediately, making a humming sound instead of saying anything and I know to keep my voice low, that there is someone near him that shouldn't overhear what we talk about.

"We have to move again," I whisper into the phone, my voice barely above a breath. "Her sister knows. This location is now compromised."

"Make it happen."
