Chapter Nine

Subject: House, Car…

Since I did well during my first year of college, my parents bought me a car (picture of the yellow Beetle attached).

Her name is Eleanor.

I know you're already rolling your eyes because I named her. Stop judging me. It's not like I'm naming your cars—do you own a car?

Your dad is teaching me how to drive. I've always liked Arthur, but since we've spent the summer together, I guess he's now my best and only friend.

I also own a house in Austin.

My parents don't know, and I hope you keep this a secret. I haven't told them that Porter and I are dating. He's not ready, and… maybe I'm not ready either.

Where are you?

The last time I heard, you were working somewhere in the Mediterranean Sea. At least, that's what I overheard your dad say on the phone. What is it that you do? I thought it was video games but now…

Just keep me updated.

Subject: Judging

You have to tell your parents what's happening in your life. I wish I weren't busy so I could go and put some order into this ridiculous relationship that doesn't make any sense to me. I like your new car, and I'm glad you're getting driving lessons from my father.

No offense, but what your parents taught you when you guys were sixteen wasn't great. Not to add salt to the wound, but that's exactly why Jacob almost died. He thought that driving his motorcycle on the property was the same as driving in Seattle. It's not.

When I have time, I'll ask Dad to take you along I-5, all the way to California and back. You need to practice before you go back to Austin. In my opinion, you should ask your parents to get you a security detail. If not to protect you from their crazed fans, then they can at least be there if you need help.

I know about the house since we had to install a security system. Living off campus by yourself is a bad idea. I made sure to add an extra layer to it. I'll walk you through the features once you're back in Austin. You can even call the doctor.

Where am I?

It's classified. I still own the software company, but I'm expanding my horizons. Maybe one day I'll tell you what I do. Did you receive this month's comic books?

Be safe,

Mason

I can't deal with you… seriously. This is ridiculous. Just tell me the truth, you sold the company and you're working for your father. How else can you explain everything you know about the alarm system.

In case you're wondering, I'm in Vancouver. Something tells me your father is using me as his driving monkey. After this stop, we're driving all the way to Tijuana. Well, not in one day. We're stopping in a lot of places. I'll be honest, this trip is all I ever wanted. Well, last year I had a lot of fun. You know, when we drove to Austin. I can't believe that's the last time I saw you. You and your dad know how to handle road trips with style.

I wish I could do this with my parents. Is it wrong to wish for a normal childhood and life? I know it's over, but I yearn for something somehow normal. Less… secret.

When do I get to see your face?

Subject: Sorry…

I'm working on a special project that kept me off the grid. Dad told me you're back in school. How's that going for you?

By the way, I went to Geneva and saw your brothers. Jacob is doing a lot better. He might start running soon (picture attached).

Sorry if I don't have a lot to say, but I'm between jobs, and there's a lot to do before going off the grid. Please take care of yourself. Attached are the instructions for the security system. Though, Dad said he walked you through them. I'm glad he drove you to Austin.

Talk soon,

Mason
