CHAPTER 22

Rayna

T his morning as I'm getting Lily ready for the day Janta has planned for us, my heart races with an unsettled nervousness. This is all I want, to be able to have a family and to make memories as one. So why am I still so unsure?

"It's just a picnic," I remind myself. It isn't a grand gesture of Janta returning the love I feel. The distance I've put between us has caused more strain that I had anticipated. But these past few days I've watched as Janta respected my need for space, throwing himself into daddy duties, and simultaneously making my heart ache for him even more.

But my fears still stand, what if this all falls apart? Even as I think that, I can't help but smile down at Lily, thankful that she has a father that will go out of his way for her.

"I'm here," Janta bellows from the front door, his chipper demeanor is evident even across the house.

"Let's get this over with, sweet girl," I say as I change Lily and get her dressed. "We're in the room, Janta!" I call out, trying and failing to calm my racing heart.

As Janta steps into the room, his presence is as commanding as ever. His tall, muscular form fills the doorway, and for a moment, I'm overwhelmed by the urge to close the distance between us, to forget the past tensions and just embrace him. But I hold back, anchored by both caution and hope.

"Hey, I hope you're ready for today," Janta says, his voice tinged with a blend of excitement and apprehension. "I think you and Lily are really going to enjoy what I've planned."

He begins to detail the itinerary, and with each word, my heart feels a bit lighter. "First, we'll head to your favorite park, and I've packed a picnic with all of your favorites."

The care he's put into every detail of the picnic is evident, and it fills me with a renewed sense of connection. "Thank you for being so thoughtful," I manage to say, my voice soft but sincere.

"It's nothing," he replies quickly, brushing off the compliment but smiling, nonetheless. "I just want today to be special for both of you."

This gesture, so full of care and attention, chips away at the walls I've built around my heart.

Today feels different. It feels like a turning point. "I appreciate it, really. Today means a lot to me," I admit, feeling the sincerity of my words as I speak them.

As we prepare to leave, I take a deep breath, feeling a weight lifting. Today is about more than just a picnic; it's about giving us a chance to mend what's been strained and perhaps rediscover the warmth we once shared. I step closer to him, ready to embark on this day with an open heart, curious and cautiously optimistic about where this renewed sense of connection might lead us.

"Let's make it a great day," I say, offering him a smile that mirrors my growing hope for what lies ahead.

He returns my smile and my heart flutters at the sight. We always seem to fall into comfortable ease, and with my recent fears, I've missed this between us.

As Lily contentedly explores the soft grass, the afternoon sun casts a warm glow around us. The park's distant noises blend into a soothing hum, providing a serene backdrop for a moment of quiet connection.

Janta's expression shifts to one of introspection as he turns to face me. "Rayna, I've been thinking a lot about where we've stumbled," he starts. "I know you feel like I haven't always been present the way I should have, tangled up in my own worries about being enough—for you, for Lily."

I draw in a deep breath, appreciating his candor. "I've been scared too," I confess, the words tumbling out. "Afraid of getting hurt again, afraid that if I leaned on you, it might all fall apart."

He extends a hand, his touch gentle against mine, a silent offer of solidarity. "I think I've been so busy trying to hold everything together, I didn't see how I was pushing you away."

His admission nudges at the guarded corners of my heart. "I've clung to my independence because it felt safer," I admit, my voice barely above a whisper. "Because it was the only thing I thought I could control."

A pause settles between us, filled with the weight of our shared vulnerabilities.

"I miss what we had." Janta's rumbling timbre reverberates throughout my body, and my breath catches in my chest.

His words resonate deep within me, awakening a blend of nostalgia and cautious hope. "I miss it too," I respond softly, allowing the sincerity in my voice to bridge the gap between us. "Maybe this is our chance to mend things, with openness and patience."

He nods, giving my hand a reassuring squeeze. "Let's take it one step at a time. Together."

As we sit there, hands linked, a sense of tentative optimism begins to blossom within me. Here, in this shared space of open hearts and dreams, we might just find the path back to each other, one gentle, honest conversation at a time

As the day unfolds, I start to see Janta in a different light. His kindness radiates through his actions, and his unwavering dedication not only to our daughter but also to making this day perfect for us touches me deeply. Each activity we share, each smile exchanged over Lily's contented coos, brings a surge of warmth to my heart.

Watching him carefully adjust Lily in her blanket, ensuring she's comfortable and entertained with her colorful toys, I can't help but envision a future where Janta isn't just Lily's father but also my partner, my confidant. The thought of restoring what we once had, of building something even stronger, fills me with a quiet joy.

I notice the small things he does—the way he gently places Lily's favorite stuffed animal next to her, the careful way he hands me a drink, and the attentive manner in which he listens when I share my thoughts.

As we sit back on our picnic blanket, watching Lily reach for the soft fabric of her blanket with a giggle, Janta turns to me with a soft smile. "Seeing you like this, happy, it means everything to me," he says, and his words resonate deeply.

"I'm happy," I admit, allowing myself to bask in the sincerity of the moment. "Today has been wonderful."

Janta nods, his eyes reflecting a hopeful future. "I want more days like this, Rayna. More laughter, more sharing... I want us to be a team."

The possibility of rebuilding our relationship, of rediscovering the partnership we once cherished, seems more tangible now than it has in a long time.

Today has not only been a reminder of Janta's qualities but also a glimpse of what our future could hold. This newfound perspective, full of potential and promise, fills me with anticipation for what lies ahead.

As the sun begins its descent, the busy sounds of the afternoon give way to the serene whispers of evening. Lily, lulled by the gentle air, sleeps soundly in her stroller next to us. Janta's arm wraps around me, pulling me closer into his warmth. I can feel the steady beat of his heart, mirroring the quickening pace of my own.

As the last light of the day touches our faces, he leans in hesitantly. My breath catches in the cool evening air, and without a thought, I close the distance between us. This time, I don't pull away. Our lips meet, and the kiss deepens, slow and meaningful. It is tender and gentle, yet filled with the intensity of all that we've shared and all that lies ahead.

Between breaths, Janta whispers, "I've missed this... us."

My reply is just as soft, tinged with emotion. "Me too. Let's not let go this time."

This kiss doesn't just bridge the gap of our recent distance; it feels like a silent agreement, a promise to explore what lies ahead for us, whatever that may be. It's an acknowledgment of our past hurts and a hopeful gesture towards healing and rediscovery.

As we part, the world hasn't changed, but something between us has. There's a softness in Janta's gaze, a vulnerability that he rarely shows. My heart is full, racing with the thrill of this new beginning and the quiet joy of what this might mean for our little family.

That evening, after we settle Lily into her crib, Janta and I linger in the doorway of her softly lit room, watching her drift into sleep. The tranquility of the moment seems to echo the peace settling in my heart. As we turn to leave, our hands find each other's, a silent acknowledgment of the connection we've rekindled today.

In the dim light of the hallway, I pause and look into Janta's hazel eyes. They hold a hope and a hint of the day's joy. Holding his gaze, I gather my thoughts, my heart steady in my decision. "I'm ready to give our relationship a real chance," I say, my voice confident and clear.

Janta's expression softens, his eyes searching mine for a moment before he speaks. "It's not always going to be easy," he admits, his voice low and sincere. He pulls me into his arms, enveloping me in a sense of security and warmth. "But I'm willing to face the challenges together if you are," he continues, his words vibrating against me.

In his embrace, I feel the weight of our past and the lightness of our future. The path ahead is indeed uncertain, filled with potential pitfalls and promises. Yet, standing here with him, I feel a surge of hope and excitement for what we might build together—not just for ourselves, but for Lily too.

"I am," I affirm, my voice soft yet resolute. At my words, Janta dips his head down and presses his lips to mine. This kiss, gentle yet firm, feels like a seal on our commitment—a promise made not just in words but in the quiet depths of our hearts.

We stay like this for a moment, locked in each other's embrace. my arms wrap around Janta's neck as his hand rests on my lower back pulling me to him. His other hand cradles my head as the kiss deepens filling me with promise.

We pull away and I look into his eyes, seeing my own feeling reflected back to him. A sense of contentment settles within me.

Lily stirs and he pulls me in for a quick kiss and swats me on the ass as I turn to tend to her. "I'll be here when you get back," he says with a mischievous smile.

I laugh as I walk away finally feeling confident that things are going to work.
