‘I think she’s the one,’ Bella says as I hand her the ticket in exchange for a packet of giant salt-and-vinegar Hula Hoops.

‘ Emmeline?

Are you sure?’

‘Are you not?’

‘I quite honestly hadn’t thought of it.’

‘Eddie!’ Bella says, laughing.

‘What?’ I ask her, crunching on a hoop. ‘Should I have been thinking that?’

‘I think you and Emmeline were destined to meet.’

‘We were?’

‘The letters you found for Elsie? Her reply? It all seems

like it aligned at the right time for you to fall madly in love with Emmeline.’

‘Gosh,’ is all I can say about that.
