31. Wyla

Chapter 31

Not gonna lie… the first few days here were hard. Stevie would cry when Jett would leave for the stadium and cry when we left the game at night. It killed me just as much as it killed Jett, but the hours we get in the morning—those have made this trip fucking worth it.

Jett and Stevie get up around seven-thirty to make breakfast where I get to sit and sip coffee, enjoying the show. Tuesday, after we ate we took Stevie to the indoor pool in Jett's apartment complex. Wednesday, we went to a Farmers Market and Stevie got to build her own bouquet of flowers. Yesterday, Stevie made another pool day request, but today we decided on a lazy day, watching Tangled on the couch together.

Tonight's game is a little later than they have been, so I made a deal with Stevie that if she took a really good nap, I would get her some ice cream from the cart at the stadium .

My heart wants to explode as Jett kisses Stevie's head, tucking her in for her nap. "Love you, get some sleep."

"Love you too, Daddy." Stevie snuggles into her blankets. "See you at your game."

"See you there, Little Bee."

I reach for Jett's hand knowing I'll have to pull him out of here. We're closing in on the end of the week and we're both dreading it.

As we make it back to the living room Jett pulls me into a tight hug. "I have to go."

"I know. We're good, I promise. With any luck, Stevie will sleep until it's time to get ready and your mom has already texted me this morning that she'll be here around five-thirty."

Jett kisses the top of my head. "I love you. I'll see you before the game?"

I look up, resting my chin on his chest. "Of course, I'll text you when we get there."

"Okay." Jett finally lets a smile grace his face before leaning in for a lingering kiss. His hands go up to my face then slide back into my hair.

I'm tempted to climb up him, knowing good and well he'd carry me back to our bed, but I've noticed this week that punctuality is huge for game days so I'll enjoy what I can get for this moment .

He pulls me closer as his tongue glides in my mouth. That nearly does me in, and I'm about to say forget the game but then my phone starts to ring.

Jett pulls back resting his forehead on mine as I pull it out of my pocket. "It's Win. I should probably make sure everything's okay."

"Okay, baby. I gotta head out anyway." He steps back but cups my cheek still. "Wear my jersey tonight for me?"

"Of course."

He leaves after a quick kiss to my forehead as I answer Winry's FaceTime. "Hey, Win. What's up?"

"You got a place where you can be alone for a minute?" Winry's hopping out of her car and her tone doesn't indicate that this is a happy call.

I hear our front door close but I peek down the entryway to double check. "I'm alone. What's wrong? Where are you at?"

"I'm at Waverley's. It's a girls' room moment."

"Oh no."

Waverley started the girls' room code when her and Owen started trying to have a baby two years ago. The first time she took a test, she was so nervous she called begging me and Win to come over.

We sat with her and did everything we could to make her laugh in the two minutes it took for the results to come back, and when Owen tried to come in she kicked him out telling him this was the girls' room in her best Amanda Bynes impression.

I'll let you fill in the rest of that story.

Each time got significantly harder, but Wav always did her best to keep it together for Annabelle's sake. She would always follow up a negative test with, "at least I'm still a mom to Annabelle," but we knew she was hurting.

Our last girls' room happened last December, and Waverley swore she was done trying. After that one, it required all on deck for a sister pile, which meant it was me, Winry, Annabelle, Wav, and Owen all together on the floor while Graham handled Georgia and Stevie.

Winry opens up the front door. "Wav?"

I hear a faint "back here" from Wav as Winry walks in.

"Is anyone else there?" I ask.

"I don't think so. I know Owen's working, but I texted him right away to head this way and I'd come get him after I talked to her. I haven't seen Belley yet." Winry knocks on what I'm assuming is their bathroom door. "Waverley, can I come in?"

"I called you over here, didn't I?" Waverley's snarky voice is louder now, and I'm a little relieved she still has that bite in her personality .

Winry halfway rolls her eyes as she opens the door. "Hey, are you okay? I called Wyla."

Winry turns the phone around. "Hey, Wav."

"Hey, how's Seattle?" Waverley bites at her thumb.

"Waverley, what's going on?"

Wav continues to bite at her thumb. "I took a test… I can't look at it."

"It's okay, we'll wait with you," I say.

"Oh, it's ready. I took it ten minutes ago when I called Win. I can't look at it, but Annabelle is gonna be home from volleyball practice in an hour. I can't be a mess when she gets here."

Winry sets the phone down on the back of the counter so I can still see them. I physically feel sick. I should be there. My sister needs me, and I'm not there.

"Okay, deep breath." Winry places her hands on Wav's shoulders. "I'll look at it… do you want to stay in here?"

Wav shakes her head. "I can't be in here when you look. I'll go sit on the couch." Wav side steps Win and bends down to look at the phone. "I'm both happy and sad you're not here, but I love you anyway."

I can already feel the tears welling. "I love you too, Wav. It's going to be okay."

She musters a fake smile. " I know."

Winry waits until she hears the bedroom door close before she moves the test in front of us without looking and takes another deep breath.

"Is Owen outside yet?"

"Probably, he knows the situation so I'm sure he dropped everything." Winry takes another deep breath. "You ready?"

"No. I wish I was there."

"Me too." Winry sighs and flips the stick.

For a moment, I'm not sure what emotion crosses Winry's face, but she says, "Holy shit, Wyla. It's positive."

I sit straight up. "It's positive?"

Winry nods and flips it for me to see the two pink lines. "Holy shit!" Winry moves without thinking, so I yell, "Take me with you!"

"Right, sorry." She grabs the phone and races out of the bathroom. My heart is absolutely pounding.

"Flip it so I can see her," I say before we leave the bedroom.

Winry pauses at the door and flips the camera. "I can't promise I'll be a good camera girl."

"Well, do your best."

Winry opens the door to head into the living room where Wav sits still chewing on her thumb. She looks up, and it's a blessing she can't see me because tears are already sliding down my face.

"Wav," Winry starts and I feel like the second in between the words are minutes. "You're pregnant!"

She shoots up from the couch. "What?"

Winry hands her the test. "It's positive, Wav. You're pregnant!" she screams.

Win holds me up and we get to see the moment it sinks in for our sister. Her face lights up as she screams happily at the test. Winry pulls her in for a hug so my screen goes black but I can hear their screams as they bounce up and down.

It lasts about three seconds before I hear the door busting open, and Owen's voice asking what happened.

Winry steps back, fixing the phone. "Sorry, I tried."

"It's okay," I whisper back. "Don't let me miss this part."

Since Owen was at work, he's in full uniform—vest and all—but that doesn't stop Wav from jumping on him. "We're gonna have a baby!"

Owen's arms wrap around her tightly as he catches her. "We're having a baby?"

Wav leans back but Owen doesn't let go. She holds up the test. "We're having a baby, honey. "

Even through the phone, I can see the joy in Owen's eyes. There was never a moment where he made Waverley feel like her and Annabelle weren't enough for him, but I know, deep down, he wants this just as much as Wav does.

For the next half hour, I stay on the phone as we all cry happy tears. Waverley takes three more positive tests because no matter how much that first one confirms it something in her tells her to take more.

Waverley plops down next to Win and takes the phone from her. "I wish you were here."

Just when I thought I cried all my tears. "I wish I was there too."

A permanent smile has taken over Wav's face. "When you get back you have to give us all the details of you and baby daddy. But if y'all don't mind, we'd like to tell Annabelle with it being just us."

Owen comes behind the couch to kiss her head. "In other words, get out."

Winry reaches back to smack him. "Hey, I called you to come over here. You're a part of this because of me."

"Win, I'm a part of this because I'm the father." Owen leans down to Wav. "I am the father, right?" he teases her.

"Yes! Go away, you've done your part. Let me say bye to my sisters."

He kisses her cheek then walks out of view .

"He's going to be a hoverer; I can just feel it." I laugh.

I wonder what Jett would have been like when he found out. I push that thought down for a moment trying to keep the focus on my sisters.

Winry lays her head on Wav's shoulder. "I'm going to be a hoverer."

"Great." Waverley rolls her eyes. "Well, hover tomorrow. I'm now officially kicking you out."

Winry takes her phone back. "Alright, I'm going. Wyla, give Evie Girl kisses for us! And mandatory sisters' meeting the second your flight lands Sunday."

I tell my sisters I love them, and as I hang up I officially put missing important sister moments on the con list.
