11. Colton
Chapter eleven
Colton
I sighed as I looked over my roster assignments again. Now that Bosland’s security detail was over, I was trying to decide what to do with Jason. The truth was, after the ambush, we were short-staffed on security at the house. I didn’t want him here at the house around Layla, but I also didn’t trust him out of my sight.
I jumped when my office door was kicked open. My gun was half-raised when it bounced off the wall, and I registered who was standing in my doorway.
The Renegades. And they looked pissed.
“That’s a good way to eat a bullet for breakfast,” I said as I holster my weapon. “How can I help you ladies?”
Monika stomped forward with Kadence and Brandi flanking her and slapped her hands on my desk. If looks could kill, I’d be dead three times over. I saw Nate and Bear leaning against the wall in the hallway with smirks on their faces. I understood those smirks. They were identical to the one I had when Layla was going nuclear on someone who wasn’t me.
“You can start by explaining to us how the fuck you could let Layla kill Sean knowing she loved him,” Monika growled. “She hates herself now, and it’s all your fucking fault!”
Ahh. This. I should have expected this to happen eventually—only one way to get myself off of their shit list. I stood and gathered my keys and wallet. “Follow me,” I ordered. I left my office and pointed at Bear and Nate. “You stay here. I’ll have them back shortly.” They looked like they were about to argue, but I held my hand to silence them. “It’s non-negotiable. Renegades only or nobody.” I turned to look at the girls. “Your choice.”
Their glares hadn’t lifted, but Monika looked at Bear and nodded. “It’s fine. Stay here.”
I nodded and went to the garage, trusting they would follow. We piled into my car, and I pulled out of the driveway.
“Where are we going?” Kadence asked.
“You’ll see,” I replied. I pulled into the parking garage and led them to the elevator.
“Why are we at your old apartment?” Monika asked as I pressed the button for the top floor. I raised my eyebrows at her in surprise. “What? You don’t think I know how to keep tabs on people? I’m Triple Skulls and look out for the people I love.”
“We’re here because I have something to show you,” I replied. We exited the elevator and paused at the door as I slid the key into the lock. “Now, before I show you this, you have to swear you won’t say anything to Layla.”
“Not a fucking chance,” Brandi replied, crossing her arms over her chest. “If we think she should know, we’re telling her.”
It was a risk I was going to have to take. Maybe they will know how to navigate this with Layla better than I do. I unlocked the door and let it swing open. I’m pretty sure they will agree with me, though.
Kadence, Monika, and Brandi stepped forward cautiously and then froze.
Their heads whipped to me.
“You sneaky bastard,” Kadence said.
I couldn’t help but grin.
