68. Kian
Do you think the Doomers will go after Margos family? Negal asked before Kian could formulate his answer to Margo.
He didnt know how much shed been told about what had happened in Acapulco and whether she knew about the involvement of the clans enemies.
On the one hand, it would be difficult to explain the danger to her family without giving her context, but on the other hand, it wasnt advisable to give her substantial additional information that would need to be erased if she failed to transition.
Its possible, Kian answered Negals question first and then turned to Margo, deciding that telling her the truth about the situation was the decent thing to do.
When he was done recounting the events, sparing Margo only the most gruesome details, her cheeks were stained with tears, and her eyes blazed with fury.
I hope they are all dead, she hissed. And I hope that they died in agony.
Kians smile was cold. Those who actively participated are, but the leaders who either ordered the massacre or allowed it remain at large, and I intend to rectify the situation.
Going after the Brotherhood leaders, those responsible for what had happened in Acapulco and countless drug-related deaths, hadnt occurred to him until that moment.
Kian didnt command the manpower to attack the Brotherhoods base and take out Navuh and his entire mercenary army. He also couldnt just nuke the island because he would kill thousands of the Brotherhoods victims along with their abductors and jailers. But he could target the leaders when they were away from the island.
Before, the Brotherhoods upper-level commanders had rarely left their stronghold, but now that they had shifted to financing their operation with drug and trafficking money, they needed to oversee the human scum in their employ, and the mid-level commanders were out in the world for extended periods of time.
Regrettably, the upper echelon of the Brotherhoods leadership hardly ever left the island, but he could start taking out the mid-level operators one by one.
Come to think of it, Losham had been operating in California for years now, but going after Navuhs adopted sons would be an open declaration of war, and Kian wasnt ready for that.
The mid-level scum would have to do for now.
It wouldnt be easy, and he would need much better intelligence than he had now, but it was doable.
As the decision solidified in his mind, it settled the burning ache that had taken residence in his chest the day hed learned of the massacre. Vengeance would not bring those lives back, but it might deter the evildoers from striking with such brutality again, and that was priceless.
In addition, it just might disrupt and slow down the drug supply and human trafficking superhighway, which would also save countless lives.
First, though, he needed to take care of Margo and her family, who had been inadvertently dragged into his world and the war hed been waging his entire life against the Brotherhood and other devil-spawned evildoers.
Feeling his fangs grow in his mouth, Kian commanded them to retract, and when that didnt work, he closed his eyes and thought of Allegras slobbery kisses, which never failed to do the trick.
Did anyone check on my family to see if they are okay? Margo asked.
Not yet, Turner admitted. If you can give me their phone numbers, Ill have my assistant call them pretending to be a telemarketer.
Margo grimaced. They will end the call before your assistant can ask them anything.
Turner smiled. But we will know that they havent been kidnapped. Are they usually home on the weekend? Or do they go shopping or out to eat?
My parents are most likely home, but my brother and his fiancée are probably out and about.
Kian and Turner exchanged glances.
Your brothers fiancée was the one who called the police and filed a missing persons report, so you are right about them being in danger as well.
Margo reached into her purse and pulled out a notepad and a pen. Im writing down all four cell numbers. My parents still have a landline but rarely answer calls since most are from telemarketers. She tore out the page from her notepad and handed it to Turner.
Ill text my assistant the information right away, he said.
Margo shifted in her chair and turned her gaze to Kian. If all of your Guardians are on this ship, who will you send to protect my family?
Turner has human subcontractors he works with. They are all highly trained former Special Ops people. They know what they are about.
Margos expression turned skeptical. What good are humans against immortals who can thrall and compel?
Most immortals cant compel, but thralling is usually more than enough to get humans to cooperate with them. Given the circumstances, I wish we had a better solution, but thats the best we can do. I hope that the Doomers didnt get to them yet and that we can whisk them away somewhere safe. He looked at Turner. We can use the cabin again.
Good idea, the guy answered without pausing his rapid typing on the phones screen.
Kian shifted his gaze back to Margo. We have a very nice cabin in the mountains where we can house your family until we are convinced that the coast is clear and they can return home.
