Chapter Twenty-Eight

J esse waited for Cannon to come out of his appointment. Her doctor had scheduled hers after Cannon's cast removal. Jesse stood up and walked over to one side of the waiting room and then walked back to her chair. The stupid fake contractions had been bugging her since lunch yesterday. She hadn't even really felt hungry for any of the special foods on Labor Day. She'd sipped some iced tea and kept her feet up.

Today, everything hurt. Her girls were pressing on her pubic bone enough to make her want to cry. She wondered if she could get her doctor to induce. She was so done with all of this.

Cannon had been a saint these last couple of weeks. After talking to the sheriff, Renae had been placed with a sweet couple in town who were foster parents. Jesse had invited them to the picnic yesterday. In just those two weeks, Renae wasn't so painfully thin and the smile on that girl's face was ear to ear. In fact, Renae couldn't stop talking about how wonderful the family was. Although Jesse would have preferred her on the compound, none of them were approved for foster care. When everyone figured that out, she saw a couple of faces that looked like this deficiency might be fixed soon.

The girls' room was perfect. Cannon wasn't getting a lot of sleep, so he'd started taking an afternoon nap. Whenever Jesse woke up during the night, Cannon would get out of bed to help her up. Her belly was freaking huge. She wondered how big they'd estimate the girls were today. It seemed to her that her belly entered a room way before she did. Cannon talked to the girls in the morning and at night. In the evening, he'd rub lotion on her belly to help with the itchiness and stretch marks while he talked to the girls. And he was still leaving the post-it notes for her. Now he could do it himself. Yesterday, he'd left her one in the spice rack.

Then she'd found one on top of her motorcycle boots.

She dreamed of being wrapped around him on his bike, but right now, she wouldn't even be able to reach him with her arms around her belly. She stood up and walked across the room again and then back to her chair. Before she could sit, the door opened, and Cannon walked out. He walked over to her, sliding his arm around her back and pulling her to him. He kissed her forehead.

"Ready to go check on the girls?"

She nodded and grabbed her purse, allowing Cannon to lead her out of the room with his arm around her. When they got on the elevator, he pushed the number of their floor, then pulled her back against his chest so she could lean on him. If only he could carry her belly for her. She groaned and the pain from the girls pressing on her had her breathing deep. Man, it felt like they were jumping right between her legs. The elevator opened and Cannon led her to her doctor's office. She loved that the office was actually a part of the hospital because of the convenience. She checked in and the nurse behind the receptionist motioned her back.

"We're ready for you."

The nurse got her weight, asked the questions, then told her to get her bottom half undressed for the doctor. With her belly, she held onto the exam table and Cannon pulled her shoes, socks, panties, and leggings off. Then he helped her to sit on the exam table and laid the thin sheet across her. Not that it really hid that much with her belly. A knock at the door and her doctor walked in.

"How are you feeling today?" the doctor asked.

"I think the girls are trying to dance in there. Everything hurts, especially between my legs."

At Jesse's words, the doctor cocked her head and quickly washed her hands and put on gloves.

"Well, let's get you laid back and your feet in here. We'll check how everyone is doing today."

Jesse leaned back with Cannon's help and then her legs were in the stirrups. Her back didn't feel good lying like this at all.

The doctor pulled a light between her legs then made a type of hmmm noise.

"Have you been feeling any contractions?"

Jesse didn't understand what she meant. "Well, those Braxton Hicks ones have been really kicking my butt since yesterday, right after lunch. Some of them really hurt."

The doctor patted her leg and pulled off her gloves, then picked up her phone and texted someone. Then she helped Jesse's legs out of the stirrups and had Cannon sit her up.

"Let's have Cannon help you get dressed. One of my nurses is bringing a wheelchair. Jesse, you're dilated to a six and sixty percent effaced. We're getting you to a birthing suite, and I'll be right behind you. You've most likely been in labor since yesterday. You are one tough mama. I'll step out because let's go Mama and Daddy, we're having babies today."

Jesse didn't say anything as Cannon helped her get her panties and leggings on, then slipped on her socks and shoes. He helped her down, then opened the door. A nurse was waiting with a wheelchair. Cannon helped her get situated, then listened to the nurse's directions. Just out the door and around the corner to the labor and delivery suites. They'd prechecked in weeks ago, and the doctor had already notified the staff Jesse was on her way.

Cannon pushed her down the hall and into the labor and delivery area. They got in the room, and she tried to listen to what the nurse said. Once the nurse left, Cannon pulled her into his arms.

"Honey, you've got this. Let's get you into the hospital gown. I'll try to be calm, but my heart is racing because, oh holy cow, the girls are coming."

Jesse grinned and let Cannon help her. His nervousness actually helped calm her down a little. He was right. They could do this. Together.

Cannon held Jesse's hand and marveled at her. By the time they'd gotten situated, the nurse had informed Jesse it was too late for an epidural. His honey had just nodded and said okay. He would have been running from the room screaming. He held her hand as the doctor told her to push on her next contraction.

He'd taken a second to send a Code Rachel text with the addition of a note babies coming when they'd first entered the room . Then he'd silenced the notifications and laid the phone on the side table. He wanted some pictures after the girls were here, but right now, this minute, he was experiencing every moment with his family.

"Okay, one more now. One… two… three," the doctor said.

Jesse squeezed his hand and groaned. Cannon glanced down between her legs and saw the doctor pull his daughter out.

"Baby A is out. Dad, do you want to cut the cord?" she asked.

"Nope, I'm good."

Yeah, he was good, but he was a little nauseous seeing all the goo and stuff on her. He'd let the doctor cut the cord, and he'd hold Jesse's hand. Once the nurse took Baby A, Jesse groaned again.

"Well, it's looks like Baby B doesn't want to be left behind. Let's do a good push. You're almost there," the doctor encouraged.

Cannon watched Jesse but also kept an eye on the nurse taking care of his daughter. He thought she was doing some type of tests after she'd cleaned the baby up.

Jesse pushed and their daughter slid out into the doctor's hand. She cut the cord.

The nurse returned with their first daughter, who had loudly cried while she was cleaned off.

"She's five pounds four ounces with an APGAR of nine."

Their doctor motioned for the baby to be laid in Jesse's arms. Cannon just stared at his daughter. He reached for her little hand. Her fingers were so tiny.

"I think Clarissa looks perfect. We talked about Rissa for what we'd call her, and she looks like one, doesn't she?"

Cannon leaned close, kissing Jesse's cheek and then kissing the baby's hand.

"Welcome to our family, Rissa. Mommy and I love you very much," he said, not caring about his eyes filling with tears.

The nurse returned with Baby B. "It's amazing but these two shared everything five pounds four ounces and another APGAR of nine."

She held the baby out to Cannon. He held out his arms and let the nurse place her in his arms.

"Ginny, I think you and your sister are going to keep us on our toes."

He leaned down so Jesse could see Ginny.

"They're both beautiful."

"Okay, Mama. We're good. You don't have any tearing, so no stitches. As long as the girls continue this good, we'll let you all go home in a couple of days. The suite will get cleaned up and then we'll give you all a little bit by yourselves. The nurses will be back in about twenty minutes to tell you about going to the bathroom, feeding, etc. If you need anyone before that, use the call button. Congratulations!"

He waited for the staff to leave and then he laid Ginny in Jesse's other arm. He made sure she was covered up and then grabbed his phone. He took a picture of Jesse by herself with the girls and then took a picture of him with them.

Once he was done, Jesse was unwrapping them, comparing the two. Ten fingers, ten toes, and as far as he could tell, absolutely identical. He wondered if that would change later, but his daughters were perfect. Ginny pursed her lips, and this wave of love swelled through him. He'd had trouble recognizing it when he'd fallen in love with Jesse, but he instantly realized as soon as he saw them, he'd love them. He wrapped Rissa, then helped Jesse wrap Ginny. A nurse walked back in.

"Okay, Mom and Dad, here are your bracelets. Since you have twins, you'll each have a bracelet for both babies. Each baby will have their own bracelet. So which one is Clarissa?"

He indicated his daughter, then the nurse put the other bracelet on Ginny. Ginny was starting to sniff and make noises, almost like a cry. The nurse talked Jesse through getting the girls to latch on and then left their little family alone. He scooted onto the bed, slipping his arm around Jesse as the girls nursed. The nurse had called it tandem nursing, and it was one more thing that awed him about his woman. He leaned close to Jesse.

"Our life couldn't be any more perfect. And I thought you were fierce with the bail bonds but today? Wow, I'm in awe of you. I love you and the girls so much."

"I love you too. Do we need to text the family since this was a little unexpected today?"

Cannon chuckled. "I texted them when we got in here, then silenced my phone."

He reached back and pulled it in front of them.

125 messages

He glanced through them but wasn't taking the time to read them all right now. He was marveling at his daughters. He did see that most everyone was on their way. He glanced at his watch.

"We probably have about forty minutes before we're invaded by the horde."

"Let's get the girls burped and see if we can catch a little nap. I'm really tired."

Cannon picked up Ginny and laid her against his shoulder, patting it until he heard a tiny burp. Then he laid her in the infant bed the nurse had placed beside the bed. As Rissa finished, he did the same. He helped Jesse get situated and then flicked the light out over the bed. Once she drifted off, he picked up both girls and then sat in the recliner by the bed. He leaned back, having one girl in each arm. Could his life be any more perfect than this?
