Chapter 5

Losax paced back and forth in the command station, the heels of his boots echoing on the metal floors. His mind was a jumble of thoughts as he thought about Morvex’s upcoming interview with Taryn, the human woman seeking refuge on their ship. He had given specific instructions to assess the situation and ensure the safety of his people before they made a final move.

But as he paced, he found himself contemplating whether to listen in on their conversation through the control panel on the wall. It wasn’t like him to second-guess himself, but this human woman had stirred something within him that he couldn’t explain.

It wasn’t just because she used the code word that put everyone on alert, or because her transmissions consistently included coordinates deemed safe for them to land on Earth. There was something else about her that piqued Losax’s curiosity.

Unable to resist any longer, he pressed the button on the control panel and heard her voice for the first time. It was soft yet strong, carrying a wave of emotions that washed over him. The intensity caught him off guard and sent his heart racing.

At first, he couldn’t make sense of his physical reaction. But then it hit him: this was what his kind felt when they found their true mate. The realization left him stunned and conflicted.

As he sank into a nearby chair, his thoughts raced with implications of this discovery. He had heard stories about this kind of response but never expected to experience it himself. The weight of it all was overwhelming.

He noticed an undercurrent of instinct guiding his actions, reminding him of the crystal resonance ceremony reserved for true mates. The idea of sharing such a profound connection with a human brought up a mix of emotions within him.

Turning his attention back to the control panel, Losax activated the camera feed from the interview room. Seeing her only intensified his reaction—there she was, standing across from Morvex with an intense gaze and a clear voice.

Through the camera, he could see that she was unlike any Synthari female he had encountered. She was tall and full-figured, with soft curves and an air of strength. Her skin was a deep brown, reminiscent of the fertile soil on his home planet. And her facial features were striking, with high cheekbones and full lips that gave her an exotic and alluring appearance.

Losax couldn’t take his eyes off her. Her dark, expressive eyes seemed to hold a depth of emotion and intelligence that captivated him. He noticed the tight curls framing her face, their unique texture and style adding to her distinctive appearance. But it wasn’t just her physical features that drew him in; it was her confident demeanor and the determination he sensed in her gaze.

As she spoke, her voice carried a husky but smooth quality, resonating with a rhythm that was unique to her. The confidence and conviction in her tone intrigued him, revealing a sense of strength and resilience.

He observed her every movement and gesture, noting the way she leaned in when making a point and the subtle nods she gave as she listened intently to his second in command. Her ability to articulate her thoughts and connect with others was evident, and he found himself wanting to know more about her story and experiences.

As the interview continued, Losax was drawn to her magnetic presence. Despite trying to maintain focus on the task at hand—navigating the delicate situation on Earth and securing a potential alliance—he was captivated by her every word and expression.

But as the topic of the mating program approached, Losax’s conflicting emotions threatened to cloud his judgment. The unexpected discovery of his true mate complicated matters, but he knew duty demanded he remain focused. He needed to act swiftly to prevent any further revelations about their plans.

His fingers hovered over the control panel, ready to interrupt the conversation. But as he looked at the woman once more, his heart swelled with admiration for her passion and determination, even as he struggled with his own feelings. He knew he couldn’t let her leave the ship without ensuring her safety—both physically and emotionally

His jaw clenched, his back straightened, and his hand gripped the door handle tightly. Losax felt a surge of determination as he steeled himself for what was to come. The weight of responsibility hung heavy on his shoulders as he thought about the consequences of his next actions.

Taking a deep breath, Losax calmed his nerves and entered the interview room. His second in command sat across from a woman, their conversation interrupted by his arrival. The air in the room grew thick with tension as Losax’s piercing gaze locked onto the woman’s brown eyes. He couldn’t ignore the powerful connection that pulsed between them, but he knew he had to remain focused on his duty to protect his people and the humans.

With measured steps, Losax approached the two and stood tall, towering over them both. The gravity of the situation weighed heavily on his mind, but he refused to let his emotions cloud his judgment. This was a critical moment, and he needed to take control.
