Chapter 13

Chapter 13

"Mrs Ellis," Julian started, talking to the cook as a new idea for the evening overcame him, "I want to plan a special dinner for Cordelia. Something that will really delight her."

They had been growing closer, and he wanted to show his gratitude.

Mrs Ellis wiped her hands on her apron and smiled. "Of course, Your Grace. What did you have in mind?"

"I was thinking of starting with freshly baked bread and a delicate soup. For the main course, roasted lamb with seasonal vegetables, and for dessert, a chocolate mousse. And we should have a selection of our best wines available."

Mrs Ellis nodded thoughtfully. "A fine choice. I shall make sure everything is perfect."

Julian smiled. "Thank you so very much. I appreciate your assistance in this."

Next, Julian turned his attention to the dining room. He found the butler and explained his vision for the evening.

"I want the dining room to feel warm and inviting. Soft candlelight, fresh flowers on the table, and a fire in the hearth. Can you arrange that?"

The butler gave a small bow. "Certainly, sir. I shall see to it right away. Any particular flowers you would prefer?"

"Something simple yet elegant. Perhaps roses and lilies," Julian suggested.

"An excellent choice, Your Grace."

As the staff bustled about, Julian supervised, ensuring every detail was perfect.

He found the maid arranging the candles on the table.

"Please could you make sure the candles are spaced evenly? And not too many, just enough to create a soft glow," Julian instructed.

With the room taking shape, Julian returned to the kitchen to check on the progress. Mrs Ellis was busy chopping vegetables, the smell of freshly baked bread filling the air.

"Everything coming along, Mrs Ellis?" Julian asked.

"Yes, Your Grace. The bread is just out of the oven, and the soup is simmering nicely. I am about to start on the lamb," she reported.

"Excellent," Julian said, smiling through the bubbles of nerves dancing in the pit of his stomach. "I appreciate all your hard work. This means a lot to me."

When everything was finally in place, Julian took a moment to appreciate the beautiful setup. The dining room looked enchanting with the soft candlelight, fresh flowers, and the fire casting a cosy warmth. He hoped the evening would convey his feelings for Cordelia.

As the sun began to set, Julian dressed in his finest attire, nerves fluttering in his stomach. He felt excitement and anxiety, hoping that this gesture would convey the depth of his feelings. When he was satisfied with his appearance, he made his way to Cordelia's chambers.

Standing outside her door, he took a deep breath before knocking gently. The door opened, and Cordelia stood there, looking radiant. She wore a simple yet elegant dress, her hair cascading in soft waves. Her eyes sparkled with anticipation, and Julian felt his heart swell with affection.

How on earth could she not see that she truly was the most beautiful woman alive? It was madness to think that she did not consider herself worthy.

"Good evening, Cordelia," he said, offering his arm. "I have arranged a special dinner for us tonight. I hope you will join me."

Cordelia's smile was bright and genuine. "I would love to, Julian. Thank you."

They walked together to the dining room, the air between them filled with excitement and closeness. As they entered the room, Cordelia gasped softly, taking in the beautiful setting.

"Julian, this is wonderful," she said, her eyes shining with appreciation. "Thank you so much for doing this."

"It is my pleasure, Cordelia," Julian replied, guiding her to her seat. "I wanted to do something special for you."

They settled into their seats, the soft glow of candlelight illuminating their faces. The aroma of freshly baked bread and delicate soup filled the room, creating a comforting and intimate atmosphere.

As they began their meal, Julian felt more at ease than he had been in a long time. Cordelia's presence was soothing, and her warmth and genuine appreciation made him feel valued. They chatted about various topics, the conversation flowing naturally.

Halfway through the meal, Cordelia brought up her family, her voice filled with affection. "I must tell you about my sister, Felicity. We are very close, you see. She has always been my confidante, my rock. Growing up, we did everything together."

Julian smiled, intrigued by this glimpse into Cordelia's past. "She sounds wonderful. Do you miss her?"

"Very much," Cordelia admitted, her eyes reflecting a hint of longing. "She has been a great source of support for me, especially during difficult times. We write to each other often, but it is not the same as seeing her in person."

Julian reached across the table, taking her hand in his. "I understand. It is a big change for you."

Cordelia squeezed his hand gently. "Thank you, Julian. I appreciate your understanding." She hesitated for a moment before continuing, "Would it be possible for Felicity to visit us here? I would love you to meet her, and having her here would mean the world to me."

Julian's heart raced at Cordelia's request. He knew this was an important step for them, a chance to welcome someone significant from Cordelia's life into their newfound intimacy. Yet, the idea of meeting Felicity made him nervous. He was unsure how he would fare in conversation or manage his insecurities in front of someone so close to Cordelia.

However, he also knew he could not let his fears overshadow Cordelia's happiness. Taking a deep breath to steady himself, Julian nodded slowly, meeting Cordelia's eyes with determination.

"Yes, Cordelia," he began, his voice steady despite the fluttering in his chest. "I would be honoured to meet your sister. Having her visit us here would mean a great deal to me."

Cordelia's face lit up with gratitude and affection. She squeezed his hand gently, a silent expression of thanks for his willingness to step outside his comfort zone for her sake.

"Thank you, Julian," she said softly. "I cannot wait for you to meet her. I know you shall get along wonderfully. And, of course, I would love to know more about your family …"

Encouraged by Cordelia's warmth and enthusiasm, Julian felt a surge of confidence that he hadn't expected. Cordelia's curiosity about his family history gave him the perfect opportunity to deepen their connection.

"You know, Cordelia," Julian began, a spark of excitement in his eyes, "there is something I would like to show you. It is a part of the manor that is not often visited."

Cordelia looked intrigued, her gaze fixed on Julian with genuine interest. "What is it?"

"It is the old great hall," Julian explained, rising from his seat and extending his hand to her. "Follow me."

Cordelia placed her hand in his without hesitation, and Julian led her through the corridors of the manor. They walked in comfortable silence, the anticipation building between them as they approached a heavy wooden door tucked away in a quiet corner.

Julian pushed the door open, revealing a vast and dimly lit space. The air was cool and still, and the only sound was their soft footsteps echoing against the stone walls. Julian picked up a candelabra from a nearby table, its flickering flames casting dancing shadows across the hall.

"This," Julian said softly, his voice reverent, "is where my ancestors are honoured."

Cordelia's eyes widened as she took in the sight before her. Row upon row of portraits hung on the walls, each depicting a solemn figure dressed in finery from ages ago. The faces stared down at them with an air of solemn dignity, their presence seeming to fill the hall with centuries of history.

"These are my forebears," Julian explained, his voice filled with pride and a touch of vulnerability. "Each one has contributed to the legacy of this estate in their own way. They remind me of where I come from, of the responsibilities that come with my name."

Cordelia moved closer to him, her gaze shifting between the portraits and Julian's face. "It is incredible," she whispered, her voice hushed in the quiet space. "To see the history that's woven into your life."

Julian smiled warmly at Cordelia, grateful for her genuine interest in his family history. As they stood amidst the portraits of his ancestors, Julian felt a deep connection to the past and a renewed sense of pride in his heritage.

"Each of these portraits tells a story," Julian began, his voice steady yet filled with emotion. "This one here," he gestured towards a portrait of a stern-looking man in military uniform, "is my great grandfather, Sir Reginald. He was a decorated officer in the Royal Army, known for his bravery and leadership during the Great War."

Cordelia listened intently, captivated by the tales of Julian's ancestors. She glanced from one portrait to another, absorbing the rich tapestry of Julian's family history.

"And here," Julian continued, moving towards a portrait of a serene-looking woman in Victorian attire, "is Lady Beatrice, my great, great-grandmother. She was a passionate advocate for education and women's rights in her time. Her efforts laid the foundation for several charitable institutions that still exist today."

Cordelia's eyes shone with admiration as Julian recounted each story with reverence and affection. She could sense the depth of Julian's pride in his family's achievements and the weight of their legacy that he carried with him.

"They all played a part in shaping who I am today," Julian concluded, his gaze lingering on the portraits with reverence and gratitude. "Their values and accomplishments inspire me to uphold our family's legacy and positively impact the world."

Cordelia reached out and gently touched Julian's arm, her touch a silent gesture of understanding and support. "Thank you for sharing this with me, Julian," she said softly, her voice filled with warmth. "It is truly a privilege to learn about your family history."

Julian turned to face her, a soft smile playing on his lips. "Thank you for being interested," he replied sincerely. "I have never felt comfortable sharing this part of my life with many people, but with you ... it feels different. It feels right."

They stood together in the quiet of the great hall, the flickering candlelight casting a warm glow around them. At that moment, Julian realized just how much Cordelia had come to mean to him in such a short time. Her curiosity, her kindness, and her genuine care had touched him deeply, and he knew that this evening had brought them closer in ways he had never imagined possible.

Feeling encouraged by Cordelia's interest, Julian continued, "I have been thinking about how we can continue the legacy of my ancestors. Their contributions to society were significant, and I want to do something that honours their memory while making a meaningful difference today."

Cordelia's eyes lit up with curiosity. "What do you have in mind?"

"I have been considering a few projects," Julian said, joy creeping into his voice. "For instance, expanding Lady Beatrice's educational initiatives. We could establish scholarships for underprivileged students and build libraries in rural areas. Education was her passion, and I think she would be proud to see it continue."

Cordelia nodded, her enthusiasm matching his. "That sounds wonderful, Julian. Education is so important, and it can truly change lives."

Julian smiled, his heart swelling with the warmth of Cordelia's encouragement.

"I am glad you think so," he said softly. "And I believe we could make these dreams a reality with your support."

Their eyes locked, and for a moment, the world outside the great hall ceased to exist.

The connection between them was palpable, a silent understanding that drew them closer. Julian felt a magnetic pull towards Cordelia, an inexplicable force drawing him nearer, almost as if it were out of his control entirely.

He noticed how her lips curved into a gentle smile, and her eyes sparkled with excitement.

The space between them seemed to shrink, and he wondered if she felt it too, the possibility that in this room, anything might happen.

Cordelia's breath hitched, and her eyes hooded over.

She could most certainly feel it; he could see it in her eyes.

Julian leaned in slightly, his heart pounding with anticipation. He was not sure where this moment would lead them, but he knew at this moment, he wanted nothing more …

That was until the soft rustle of a dress broke the spell.

They turned to see Penny standing at the entrance of the great hall, a knowing smile playing on her lips.

"Sorry to interrupt," Penny said, her tone light but teasing. "But you did leave a wonderful dinner behind. The staff is wondering if you plan on finishing it."

Cordelia and Julian exchanged a sheepish glance, both blushing slightly.

"Of course," Julian replied, clearing his throat and stepping back. "We shall be right there, Penny."

As Penny disappeared into the dining room, Cordelia and Julian laughed quietly.

"I suppose we should get back," Cordelia said, a hint of reluctance in her voice. He was not quite sure if she wanted him to disagree with her …

But he also did not know if that was a good idea.

"Yes, we should," Julian agreed, though he was reluctant to let go of the moment they had just shared.

That was magical and confusing, and now he did not know what he wanted anymore …
