If only I could run off to a cabin in the woods for the holidays and pretend they don’t exist. Except I can’t. Instead, I’m stuck wearing a Little Drummer Boy costume while pretending everything is merry and bright for extra cash.

I didn’t always hate the holidays, and I still don’t, not really. I hate the memories they bring back, the memories of a time when my daddy was alive and it was us against the world. Now it’s just me, a pile of bills, and my raccoon stuffie.

When the manager of Chained, a local club, sees me in my costume and asks me to be a part of their Little Christmas, I agree. The money is great, and so is the free guest pass that comes with it. Maybe it’s time to take out my little things again.

When my boss asks me to fill in at a conference in Vegas, I figure I’ll have a few nice meals, lose a bit of money on slots, catch a show, and maybe check out the local club. Now that I’m here, all I want to do is stay in my room, wear my footie jams, and watch some cartoons. Everything is… much. The noise, the people, the smoke… all of it. As long as I get through the mandatory work commitments, I’ll call it a win.

The opening session moves to a new location, and the text barely comes on time. I manage to get in just as the doors are closing and soon discover I’m in the wrong room. Sometimes you need to lose something to find the one thing you didn't know was missing.

Moving to a new city, into a new apartment building, fresh off the heels of a shittastic breakup is a whole lotta change at once. I'm officially not a fan. At least my landlord is hot…hot and straight. That's probably for the best. I don't exactly have my life together.

When my kitten goes missing, I'm at a loss. I've always been so careful not to leave my door open and have no idea how she got out. All I know is that she is out there in the big world all alone, and it's somehow my fault.

And it is the best day ever, right up until I reach into my conductor's vest pocket and discover my favorite toy train is missing. I have an hour left before the event is over to find it. When I hear an offer to help, I accept it immediately. It's only when I turn to him that I discover it's the daddy I've been crushing on. Maybe losing my engine was a good thing after all.
