Chapter 92
Ifought wildly against the gigantic Caucasian Eagle who had its claws embedded so deeply within me that I swear the thing had struck bone, the pain in my arm blinding as it scored a path higher and higher towards the roiling storm clouds above.
I swung for its legs with my dagger but the angle it held me at made it impossible to make contact with its flesh.
"Let me go, you ugly motherfucker!" I roared, kicking and thrashing, my mind alive with pain.
We crashed through the grey clouds and drops of icy water rushed across my skin, while I found myself unable to see anything at all within its depths.
Thunder boomed and the furious bellows and roars of the beasts warring within the sky filled the air, surrounding me in a horror show of monsters that I could no more see than predict.
Fire flared in my palm, and I sent a quick prayer out to any star that might be inclined to take pity on me before hurling a blast of hungry flames at the eagle who held me.
The bird shifter shrieked as the flames consumed it and my short-lived triumph was crushed by the swooping feeling in my gut as I suddenly plummeted towards the ground.
I cried out, my blood pouring into the sky above me while in the back of my head, Orion's panic met with my own. A vision of him clawing his way across the filth of the battlefield while agony clung to his broken body overlayed my vision while he no doubt saw me plummeting through the sky towards my own death. The coven bond was calling out for help for both of us which neither could provide.
"Shit!" I yelled, summoning earth magic and wondering if there was any way in hell I'd be able to cushion my fall enough to save me from death at this height – assuming I didn't fall face first onto a spear before I even hit the ground.
The cloud lit with a blast of lightning, and I was blinded before I collided with the sinewy muscle of a Dragon wing.
I bounced, flipped over and then cursed as sparks of lightning bit into my blood-slicked palms where I slid down the long slope of the Dragon's wing.
"Dante?" I called through a laugh of surprise and endless gratitude.
The enormous Storm Dragon grunted in confirmation before jerking his wing and tossing me up onto his back.
My laughter fell into a whoop of excitement as Dante dropped out of the clouds at speed and I was almost hurled right off of him again.
I slapped a hand to my ruined arm and gritted my teeth against the pain as I healed the wounds away, my vision clearing and mind focusing as drops of rain splashed against my cheeks.
"Let me help you with that," I said, spotting a spear lodged in Dante's shoulder and tugging it free.
I hurled it straight into the chest of an enemy Harpy as she lunged for us and sent her spiralling away to crash into the ground far below.
Dante spat lightning at a swarm of Griffins, setting their coats alight while I placed my palms to his navy-blue scales and set to work healing the many injuries he was sporting from his time battling in the sky. He grunted in relief, and I was glad I could do something to help him.
Orion's vision overlaid my own again, his pain and fear making me gasp in alarm before I blinked it all away.
"I need to get to Orion!" I yelled. "He's that way!"
I shot a spark of energy ahead of us, my bond to Orion making it as simple as breathing to mark his location, and Dante sped after the trail of golden flames at once.
We dove through the clouds but an echoing roar broke the air apart from our right and a bronze-coloured Dragon collided with us with such force that I was nearly hurled from Dante's back.
Vines snapped from my hands, lashing my legs in place so I could focus on wielding my magic to help with the fight, but as a pair of wooden spears formed in my fists, a grey Dragon dove at us from above.
Dante flipped, lightning crackling from his flesh in a deadly arc, but between the two Dragons, he was unable to focus on attacking and was forced to defend himself instead.
I tried to ignore the horrible feeling of my stomach being left a hundred feet above us as we plummeted towards the ground and set my aim on the grey beast, hurling the first of my spears straight for it. I could only pray that Orion could hold out for a bit longer because as my head rang with the sound of Dragons battling, I knew it would be a damn miracle if I managed to survive long enough to help him.
