CHAPTER 7

I knock on Coach's door early before practice. He yells, "Come in."
"Hey Coach. You got a minute?"
He nods, then sits aside the paperwork he'd been holding. "What can I do for you, Bellport?"
"I need to cash in that favor you asked for a while back."
Grimacing, he leans back in his chair. Most people wouldn't dare hold their coach to such an agreement, especially since it was made in a heated moment. I saved the man from dealing with a bunch of bullshit thanks to our family name. In that instant, he'd promised me anything I wanted in the future. In fact, I distinctly remember him saying he'd do two favors for me. I explained I only needed one since I never expected to use it.
Figures the one time I would do so would involve something for a teammate. I have everything I need in my husband Finn. Everything else is the static around his glowing light.
"While I hate that I'm going to have to do this, I always keep my promises. Tell me what you need," he says with defeat in his voice.
"It's an easy thing. Jett Fawkes needs to get five days off leading up to and immediately following Christmas. There is something he needs to do that will take him from Bellport. He'll return in time for the game."
He leans forward, his gaze hard. "You want me to send him away when we're nearing the end of the season? He'll miss practice. Miss the chance to catch anything that throws the dynamics of the team off."
"Yes, but it's Jett. He's adaptable. Give him five minutes of game play, and he'll tell you everything you need to know about everyone. He'll be better after this trip, Coach. Besides, it's not like you can say no, remember? A promise is a promise after all.
"Fuck. This isn't how it's done, but yeah, I'll approve it. He better come back with goddamn rainbows pouring from his ass, Bellport. I want nothing less than perfection.'
"Trust me, Coach, he's going to be better than ever." I give him a wide smile. "This trip is going to give him the best kind of recharge possible."
He snorts, though he doesn't push for more details. I'm thankful for it, since I can't say anything else. It's already too much having to coordinate with the man to ensure Jett has enough time off to buffer the trip should any of his flights be delayed.
"Anything else you need?"
"Not today, Coach. Thanks for the favor." I wave goodbye as I leave his office.
