Chapter Nineteen
Jonah
“My eyes are up here, sunshine.”
“I was looking at the belt.” Evie sounded offended, but Jonah couldn’t help but notice that she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear while setting the record straight.
She was sitting in a blue velvet, high-backed chair right outside of the dressing room at an upscale men’s clothing store. Her long legs were crossed, her posture prim and poised, but she couldn’t hide the heat in her eyes when he came out from behind the curtain.
Seemed sunshine had a thing for a man in a suit. Or maybe it was the way a man stood when he wore one. Jonah felt as if he were a superhero who’d just tied on his cape—invincible.
It had been a long time since he’d felt in control, but right then he felt as if he could take it all on and come out on top.
“So?” He held up his hands and did a little spin and noticed she was working really hard to keep her gaze on his.
“I think they’re a little snug around the, uh…” She waved a hand south.
He looked down and then up at her innocently. “The uh, what?”
She waved a hand toward his crotch. “You know.”
He strode toward her until they were toe-to-toe, looking down into her eyes. Then he rested his hands on the chairback and leaned over until her full lips were inches from his. “Yeah, but I want to hear you say it.”
She let out one of those shotgun laughs, like a joyful burst that erupted from the belly. It made him want to make her laugh all over again.
“I bet you do,” she said, then pushed against his chest, shoving him back. “But instead, I’m going to grab you a larger size.”
Jonah watched her walk away, her hips swaying like only a woman could pull off, and she was a woman all right. Something his dick didn’t have a hard time remembering. Which was why the crotch was a little snug. The pants weren’t the problem. It was the woman.
He closed the curtain and sat down on the changing room bench, doing multiples of three in his head to get the image of her in that dress out of his mind. When he’d pulled up outside his house and saw her standing on his stoop, his mouth had dried up.
She was one hell of a beautiful woman. And she didn’t even know it. Which was another part of the growing attraction.
“Jonah?” Evie said from the other side of the curtain. “I brought you a bigger size and a few more things to try on.”
He parted the curtain and met Evie’s gaze. With a wink, he said, “One with more leg room?”
She smiled as if they shared a secret joke. The idea intrigued him. It felt fun and intimate all at the same time. Sexy, too. “If that’s what you call it.” She thrust forward a pair of leopard print pants.
He laughed. “I think you have me confused with Magic Mike but thanks for the compliment.”
“No one could have a true Cinderella moment without pleather leopard print,” Evie teased.
“Then I guess that makes you my fairy godmother,” he said.
She smiled like the Cheshire Cat. “Then I guess you have to do whatever I say.”
“As long as you don’t make me walk around in glass slippers.”
