Epilogue
Two years later
I was seated on the back porch of the new house, which had just been completed. It overlooked a gorgeous view of the falls, and I was waiting for Damon to get home from work. The boys had been taken down to their grandparents’ home. It was so nice to have Noah and Ella next door and their grandparents just a bit farther.
The sun was just barely beginning to set. I kept my hand on my tummy, feeling all kinds of excitement. What would he say?
I heard his cruiser pull up on the gravel, and for a flash of a moment, I thought of that fateful day with Kyle. Dang. Why was I even thinking about that day? Of course, I’d been through way too much counseling about the whole incident and my past. I was done with that.
I pushed the incident with Kyle out of my mind. I was not a victim. The past was my past.
My eyes misted, and warmth filled me. I had a very important future to move on to.
Suddenly, the sliding glass door to the deck opened and Damon walked through. “Hey, beautiful. How was your day?”
I stood and hurried toward him, unable to stay away from this man another minute. “So good. How was your day?”
He opened his arms, and I slipped inside them. The smell of soap and sandalwood overwhelmed me—the scent of everything Damon.
He bent and pressed his lips against mine, then pulled back, his eyebrows furrowed. “What’s wrong?” That was the thing about this man: he could sense every mood of mine.
I gave him a little smile. “Nothing’s wrong at all. I have a surprise for you.”
He released me slightly, looking around. “What? Did you buy that patio furniture? Do I need to assemble something?”
I knew my cheeks were reddening. “This is far more important than patio furniture.” Of course, we’d talked about having more kids, but we’d been busy with building the house and meshing our families together in the past two years. Things had been amazing and wonderful, and I hoped he would be okay with this.
“What?” He placed his hands gently on my face. “Just tell me. Oh gosh, is it something bad?”
The sincere love in this man’s eyes reminded me that he was one of the good ones. I patted his hand and said, “I don’t think so.” Carefully, I put my hands on my stomach. “You’re going to be a father … again.”
His whole face lit up. “What?” He stared down at my hands, then gave me a boyishly happy look and dropped to his knees. “You’re pregnant?” He took my hands and leaned in to press his ear against my tummy. “You’re pregnant?”
I laughed and ran my hands through his hair. “Yep.”
Suddenly, he stood and picked me up, twirling me around. “Wahoo! We’re having a baby!”
I giggled.
He put me down and planted kisses all over my face. “I love you. I love you. I love you. I couldn’t be happier.”
I’d figured he’d be okay with it, but his reaction made every part of me love him all over again. “I love you. I love you. I love you.”
He paused and grinned wider than the Grand Canyon. “A little one. Jason and Trent are going to love having a baby.”
I grinned at him. “I hope so.”
He put his hands on my waist and pulled me closer, gently pressing his lips to mine. “I think it’s about time we had a baby, because I want twenty more.”
I gasped and then laughed. “Twenty, huh?”
“Maybe a dozen.” He kissed me more deeply this time.
I laughed again, not minding his teasing. “Let’s do a baker’s dozen.”
“I like it,” he murmured, bending down and sweeping me off my feet in one motion. “I like it a lot. We could go try now for twins.”
I sighed happily and let myself get wrapped up in this wonderful man. “I don’t think it works that way.”
He opened the door, keeping me perfectly balanced in a bridal carry. “Let’s try anyway.”
I giggled and kissed him. I was completely in love with this man, and I knew I always would be.
