CHAPTER SEVEN

Grey

I left the office knowing that Luca would follow me. The way that girl reacted with my hand around her throat? She was mine. For as long as I decided to keep her. She’d turned me down with a wink the first day we met, but now that we’d had a chance to connect? No contest. All I had to do was get rid of the parents up our asses. “Mom, I’m heading out. You need anything before I go?”

“You’re not coming for drinks? I didn’t think you’d skip that.” My dad crossed his arms over this chest, instantly suspicious that I was turning down the chance to drink on his tab at whatever fancy place the adults were headed to celebrate the success of Luca’s show. “Where are you going?”

“Uh, home.” My mom reminded me I was still grounded hours ago. I wasn’t dumb enough to piss her off when I needed her to trust me.

“Home. Instead of a bar? On a Saturday night?” My dad’s eyes moved between me and Luca, who was standing somewhat behind me. Was he on to us? They’d sent me in there to get her so they could leave. It’s not like we shouldn’t have come out of the office at the same time. And I was playing it so cool. I’d adjusted my hard on before I even turned the corner. I glanced behind me.

Was Luca the weak link? No. She looked fucking bored as hell and utterly uninterested in me or my plans.

I sighed, sticking my hands in my pockets. “Yeah, I’m going home. Do you need anything?”

My dad kept staring at me, trying to crawl into my brain again. Luckily my mom wasn’t as focused on me at the moment. “No, we don’t need anything.” She smiled past me at Luca. “You ready to go? There is a beautiful bar down the street, they’re still serving food if we hurry.”

Luca’s parents had sent their son back to the hotel with her grandparents and they were waiting by the door. “Actually, will you guys all hate me if I grab a lift back to the hotel? I talked to so many people tonight.” She let her voice soften and drift off, like she was truly worried about hurting everyone’s feelings. “I’m feeling a little overwhelmed to be honest.”

Add the truth in while you lie, that was a fucking pro move if I’d ever seen one.

“Of course, kiddo. We can go with you, we—”

“No, you guys go and have fun. I’m really just beyond ready to be in bed.”

Yeah, me too. In bed. In Luca. I kept my mask in place.

She stepped into her parents’ arms, and let them hug her and shower her with more praise. They confirmed their breakfast plans, and then Luca earned her academy award for best supporting actress as she waved away their offers to drive her home. “The bar is within walking distance. I don’t want you to have to take me all the way back to the hotel. I’ll order a ride.”

“Oh, maybe Grey can take you? Since he’s headed home?” Luca’s sweet oblivious mother had a beaming smile on her pretty face. Oh, Emmie. Poor, poor trusting Emmie.

“Uh, well, I um, I have a driver. You can take my driver.” My mom stepped forward pulling out her cell phone and shaking it in the air like a crazy person. “Take my driver. Please, for the love of god, take my driver.”

My dad was glaring at me, shaking his head as subtly as he could.

“If Grey doesn’t mind, we’d much rather her be in the car with someone she knows.” Luca’s dad had his hand on his wife’s back and his loving gaze on his precious daughter who apparently wasn’t opposed to being choked. “You never know what could happen. Better safe than sorry.”

“I don’t mind, it’s on my way.” I shrugged like I couldn’t give two shits when really I was biting the inside of my cheek to keep from grinning.

My parents were standing together, frozen, staring at me in horror. I couldn’t help the snort that came out. They looked so stricken. They weren’t stupid. Both Luca and I turning down their offer out of nowhere was suspicious as hell. But they couldn’t very well tell Luca’s parents that I was literally not to be trusted alone with their daughter. How would that make them look? I’d backed them into a corner and Luca had happily helped.

“Thank you for doing this, we really appreciate it.” Kasen reached out and shook my hand and her mom kissed my cheek.

“Oh shoot.” I slapped my palm on my forehead, my acting comically thick. “I bought one of Luca’s paintings. I was going to take it to your studio for the framer to pick up.” I turned to Luca, with a frown like I was afraid of putting her out. “Do you mind? It’s already loaded in my car. The framer picks up from there and I want it to match a couple other pieces he’s already done for me.”

“You bought one of her paintings? Oh that’s so wonderful to hear.” Emmie was in love with me. No doubt about it. Was this the issue on that compound of theirs? Everyone trusted their kids too much? Was that why they were all hooking up all the time? Jesus.

“Leave it here, Grey.” My dad stepped forward, his fists clenched. “Leave it here, and I’ll take it myself tomorrow. Take her to the hotel, wait for her to get inside and then go home.”

I laughed away his clench jawed attempt to thwart me. “The weather isn’t going to be great tomorrow, I don’t want you driving around for no reason, that’s silly. It’ll be easy for me to drop on our way.” I stepped past my parents, holding my hand out for Luca to join me. I laid my palm on her lower back and guided her out the door, throwing my parents a wink over my shoulder. “Y’all have fun.”

I chuckled quietly once we hit the cool night air.

“I know we will.”
