Chapter 28

ROMAN

I headed into the closet after the shower to get dressed, dropping the towel at the entrance hoping to entice her. Next thing I know there she is right behind me throwing her underwear on the ground and hiking up her skirt. She pushed me down on the bench, climbing aggressively onto my lap. What a nice surprise, but I don’t want you to wrinkle your dress baby. I flipped her over, setting her on all fours on the bench and hiked her dress up as far as it would go and sliding in careful not to bunch up her dress too much. Damn, being inside her like this is incredible. I reached around, massaging her clit and felt her body begin to jerk as she moaned, pushing back rhythmically against me. I knew we were getting close. I knew I was getting close. It felt like she had ten orgasms before I had one, but I was deliberate not to collapse on her and mess up that dress.

It might have been unexpected, but it was not unwanted.

“If I can’t roll my eyes, you can’t peck and run.” She was laughing and out of breath as she attempted to scold me, while putting her underwear back on and getting her dress back into place.

“What the hell is peck and run?” I chuckled tucking myself into my own clothes.

“You know exactly what it is. You kiss me, get me all out of it, and run away.”

I was laughing now, remembering all the times I’ve done that to her knowing it does strange things to her. I hadn’t realized she named the event.

She looked at me wearily. “It’s not funny. It’s torture.”

“Well, feel free to get me back for it anytime you want.” I mean if that’s the punishment, yes please.

“How did you get a reservation at this place so last minute?” she asked curiously, not knowing she’s actually the guest of honor.

“I didn’t, you did.” She looked confused.

“What do you mean, I did? I’ve never been there because I’m not waiting two months for a reservation.”

“Maybe you should’ve tried. You're kind of a celebrity.” She was totally baffled now. “Babe, don’t worry about it. You’ll see when we get there.”

The same hostess from lunch that day was there again when we arrived and for some reason, she rubbed me the wrong way. I was about to say my name when she finished for me. “Mr. King, Ms Kennedy, right this way.” I looked her over skeptically holding on to that memory for another time.

Alex squinted her eyes, whipping her head in my direction. “What’s going on?”

She looked nervous and I said, while laughing, “I didn’t do this, don’t worry.” She was scanning the entire restaurant looking nervous as hell. Was she really that worried I was going to ask her to marry me or something? They brought us to a cozy table by the fireplace and the waitstaff were already there, opening the champagne.

As we sat down the waiter handed us each a glass and said, “Enjoy.”

I looked around everywhere to see if this was a surprise party that someone was putting on for me. What exactly would the party be for though, it’s not my birthday and Roman assured me it had nothing to do with him. I didn't know if I should believe him or not.

He held up his glass of champagne and said, “Cheers to no more fears.”

I laughed, thinking this was starting to scare me.

“I’ll drink to that. But you’re going to have to tell me what’s going on.”

He checked his phone and smiled then put it back in his pocket.

“You’ll find out in about five minutes,” he informed me.

“Why five minutes?”

He shook his head. “You can wait five minutes. I’m not going to tell you.”

“Why don’t we have menus?” This whole thing is so weird.

“That I don’t know.” With that, the waitstaff brought out some bread and olive oil with herbs for dipping. Another waiter came over and asked if there is anything else we’d like to drink.

Yes, I definitely need a strong drink.

“A Grey Goose martini, up, with blue cheese stuffed olives, if you have them.”

The waiter replied, “If we don’t, we’ll make them for you, Ms. Kennedy.”

“Don’t go to any trouble for them, please.”

The waiter smiled and said, “For you, Ms. Kennedy, it will be no trouble.” Why so formal and why would I get special treatment in a place I’ve never been before? I’ll be recommending this place to everyone. I looked at Roman like he had two heads.

“You’ve got to tell me what’s going on. I feel like I’m one of those Punked shows.”

He laughed and mumbled, “Now you know how I feel.”

“What did you say?” What is wrong with him?

“Nothing.” He smiled, taking a sip of his champagne.

After they brought our drinks and some appetizers I whined, “Five minutes is definitely up.” That’s when I got tapped on the shoulder and pulled into a big, very familiar, hug. I pushed away a little and saw Grant.

“Did you do this?” I was shocked, because how did he know?

“I did some of it. Roman did the rest.” He said as he kissed my cheek. He left his arm wrapped around my shoulder.

“How could you have known?”

Grant started laughing, and Roman took a big sip of his drink and looked away .

“This is my restaurant,” he revealed. My mouth hit the floor, and I looked back and forth between Roman and Grant.

“What, like you own it?”

“Just like that. I didn’t realize you didn’t know.”

“Yeah, how did I not know? And how did Roman know?” Whatever this was, Roman was staying out of it.

“We had a lunch meeting here one day. Roman called me this afternoon and asked if we had room for my girl, and the answer will always be yes.”

Roman didn’t mention that to me.

“Grant, would you like to have dinner with us?” Maybe I can get some information out of him about why I didn’t know any of this.

“How about if I have a drink with you, then I’ll leave you two alone.”

I nodded, giving him another hug and kissed his cheek.

“This is amazing. Thank you both for always being so good to me.”

Grant stayed for the one drink. We laughed and talked and managed to steer Alex’s curiosity away from why she didn’t know anything about this place.

“Could we maybe go out close to home and walk to a place where we can have a nice after dinner drink? I just want to do something I would normally do after dinner with my friends. I feel like my old life is so far away and I miss it a little.” She was really trying to test her courage, I see.

“I know just the place.” There was a quiet bar right next to the office that I went to all the time after work to be alone. It was the way I liked it before I met Alex. Now I think it might be a bad idea to be so alone, except with all the secret eyes on us.

“Did we pay the bill?” This girl really does worry too much.

“Do you think Grant is letting us pay in his restaurant?” She seemed a little at odds with that response.

“Really? He took care of the tab?” I didn’t want to get into a discussion about Grant that could lead up to her finding out what he confided in me.

“Yes, he took care of everything.” She looked confused and happy at the same time. I left a big tip for the staff, though, because that couldn’t have been easy to throw together on such short notice.

“What are you thinking?” I was trying to see if she was still thinking about Grant or if she was thinking about the court hearing.

“That there’s things I don’t know.”

Maybe this wasn’t the best idea after all. That might not have been the question I should have asked her.

“Grant owning a restaurant?” Maybe if I play it off like it’s not a big deal, she’ll feel better.

“Yes, like that, and he said he owns a lot of other things. I’ve never even been to his house, yet I’ve always felt so close to him. It seems like he’s keeping something from me. Do you think he is?”

Uh oh, here comes old Nancy Drew again. I’m not sure how to handle this, but it’s not my story to tell, so I’ll let him do it. He’d better not get me in trouble in the process.

“I don’t know, you’ll have to ask him, I guess.” I need to push this back to him and let him deal with the repercussions.

I hoped that was the end of it because we had a lot more important things to think about. Tuesday was only three days away.
