Chapter 26

TWENTY-SIX

S ayer stood at the kitchen counter, sipping his morning coffee and gazing out the window at the pink-tinged sky. The past month had been a blur of activity as they prepared for the custody hearing. Between gathering evidence, coordinating with lawyers, and caring for Vienna, he and Fia had barely had a moment to breathe.

He heard soft footsteps padding down the hall and turned to see Fia enter, her hair tousled from sleep. Without a word, she walked into his open arms and nestled against his chest. Sayer pressed a kiss to the top of her head, breathing in her familiar scent.

“Big day,” Fia murmured, her voice muffled against his shirt.

“We’re ready,” Sayer assured her, giving her a gentle squeeze. “We’ve done everything we can.”

Fia pulled back to look up at him, her brown eyes serious. “I know. I just can’t help worrying.”

“That’s what makes you such an amazing mother,” Sayer said, cupping her face in his hands. “But we have the whole town behind us. We’re not going to lose Vienna.”

As if on cue, a cheerful babble echoed from the nursery. Fia’s face lit up with a smile. “I’ll get her,” she said, rising onto her toes to press a quick kiss to Sayer’s lips before heading down the hall.

Sayer watched her go, marveling at how natural it felt to start each day like this - as a family. In just a few short months, Fia and Vienna had become his whole world. The thought of losing either of them was unbearable.

He shook off the somber thoughts and focused on preparing breakfast. By the time Fia returned with Vienna on her hip, Sayer had a stack of blueberry pancakes ready.

“Look who’s awake, princess,” Fia cooed, settling Vienna into her high chair. “Papa made your favorite breakfast.”

Vienna squealed in delight, making grabby hands toward the plate Sayer set in front of her. He chuckled, cutting the pancakes into bite-sized pieces.

As they ate, Sayer couldn’t help but marvel at how perfectly Fia and Vienna fit into his life. Watching Fia patiently help Vienna navigate her fork, wiping syrup from her chubby cheeks, filled his heart with warmth. This was everything he never knew he wanted.

A knock at the door interrupted the peaceful domestic scene. Sayer answered it to find his sister Posey on the doorstep, smartly dressed in a navy pantsuit.

“Morning, big brother,” she greeted, breezing past him into the house. “Ready for the big day?”

“As we’ll ever be,” Sayer replied, following her to the kitchen.

Posey’s professional demeanor softened as she took in the scene before her. “Well, if this doesn’t convince the judge, I don’t know what will,” she said with a fond smile.

Fia looked up from wiping Vienna’s sticky hands. “Posey! I didn’t realize you were coming over so early.”

“I wanted to go over a few last-minute details before we head to the courthouse,” Posey explained, settling into a chair and pulling out a thick folder. “How are you holding up?”

Fia’s smile was strained but determined. “Nervous, but ready to fight for our family.”

Posey reached across the table to squeeze her hand. “That’s the spirit. Now, let’s review our game plan one more time...”

The next hour passed quickly as they went over their strategy, double-checked documents, and got Vienna ready. Before Sayer knew it, they were piling into the car and heading to the courthouse.

As they pulled into the parking lot, Sayer was struck by the number of familiar faces gathered outside. It seemed half of Whispering Pines had turned out to show their support.

Luna waved as they approached, her silver hair gleaming in the morning sun. “We’re all here for you,” she said, enveloping Fia in a warm hug. “The whole town is behind you.”

Tabitha and Ivy flanked them as they made their way inside, forming a protective barrier against curious onlookers.

“Don’t worry,” Tabitha said. “I’ve got some choice words for anyone who tries to take this little angel away from you.”

Sayer felt tears burn the back of his eyes at the outpouring of support. He’d spent so much of his life feeling alone, focused solely on his work. Now, he was surrounded by people who genuinely cared - not about his wealth or status, but about him and his family.

As they entered the courtroom, Sayer’s gaze landed on Fia’s parents and Brooke, seated on the opposite side. His jaw clenched at the sight of them, remembering all the pain they’d caused the one he loved. Fia’s hand found his, giving it a reassuring squeeze.

“We’ve got this,” she whispered, her eyes blazing with resolve.

Sayer nodded, drawing strength from her. Together, they could face anything.

The next few hours were encompassed by testimonies and legal arguments. Sayer listened with pride as their friends took the stand one by one, painting a vivid picture of their life in Whispering Pines.

Luna spoke eloquently about Fia’s dedication to learning protective magic, describing how quickly she’d mastered complex spells in her determination to keep Vienna safe.

Tabitha recounted their daily walks through town, emphasizing how engaged and attentive both Fia and Sayer were with Vienna.

Ivy shared anecdotes of their visits to her tea shop, detailing Vienna’s progress and the loving environment Fia and Sayer provided.

Even Jasper made an appearance, flickering into view to offer his unique perspective as the town’s resident ghost. His testimony about the family’s frequent library visits and Fia’s voracious appetite for parenting books drew more than a few chuckles from the gallery.

Through it all, Sayer kept his eyes fixed on Vienna, peacefully napping in Fia’s arms. Everything they were fighting for was wrapped up in that tiny, perfect bundle. He silently vowed to move heaven and earth to keep her safe and happy.

When it came time to present Myla’s letters, Sayer felt Fia tense beside him. He knew how painful it was for her to revisit her sister’s words, to lay bare the abuse they’d suffered. But as Posey read excerpts detailing the emotional manipulation and cruelty Myla and Fia had endured, Sayer saw several jurors dabbing at their eyes.

The mood in the courtroom shifted noticeably as Brooke’s schemes were revealed. Sayer’s blood boiled anew as he listened to the litany of false reports and magical interference. The judge’s expression grew increasingly grave as the extent of Brooke’s malicious actions became clear.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, it was time for the judge to deliver her verdict. Sayer held his breath, his hand clasped tightly in Fia’s as they awaited the decision that would shape their future.

“After careful consideration of all the evidence presented,” the judge began, her voice ringing out in the hushed courtroom, “it is clear to this court that Fia Barlowe and Sayer Gentry have demonstrated exemplary commitment to the well-being and care of Vienna Barlowe-Gentry. The overwhelming support from their community, coupled with their obvious love and dedication, leaves no doubt that they are the best possible guardians for this child.”

Sayer felt his heart soar as the judge continued, “Therefore, it is the ruling of this court that full custody of Vienna Barlowe-Gentry be granted to Fia Barlowe and Sayer Gentry, effective immediately.”

A cheer erupted from their supporters, quickly silenced by the judge’s stern look. She wasn’t finished.

“Furthermore, given the evidence of past abuse and recent attempts to interfere with the child’s well-being, this court denies any visitation rights to Linnet and Norris Barlowe. Ms. Barlowe and Mr. Gentry will have sole discretion over any future contact between Vienna and her maternal grandparents.”

Sayer glanced over to see Fia’s parents’ faces contort with rage. He felt a grim satisfaction at their impotent fury.

The judge fixed her steely gaze on Brooke. “As for Brooke Barlowe-Chapman, your kidnapping case is another matter. But this court issues a stern warning. Any further attempts to use magic to interfere with this family will result in severe penalties, including hefty fines and the binding of magical abilities. Consider this your only warning.”

With a final bang of her gavel, it was over. They’d won.

Sayer turned to Fia, his heart overflowing with emotion. Tears streamed down her face as she clutched Vienna close. He enveloped them both in his arms, overwhelmed by love and relief.

“We did it,” Fia whispered, her voice choked with emotion. “She’s ours.”

“She always was,” Sayer murmured, pressing a kiss to each of their foreheads. “But now everyone knows it.”

As they made their way out of the courtroom, they were engulfed by a sea of well-wishers. Luna pulled Fia into a fierce hug while Tabitha cooed over Vienna. Ivy pressed a thermos of celebratory tea into Sayer’s hands, her eyes sparkling with joy.

“I knew you’d prevail,” she said warmly. “The fates were always on your side.”

As soon as the crowd was mostly dispersed, Sayer found himself engulfed in his father’s strong embrace.

“Well done, son,” his father, Lord Eben rumbled, his usually stoic face breaking into a rare, wide smile. “You’ve done our family proud.”

His mother, Lady Harmony, was already cooing over Vienna, who had woken up during the commotion. “Oh, my precious little lioness,” she murmured, tickling Vienna’s chin. “You’re officially ours now, aren’t you?”

Fia laughed through her tears as Lady Harmony pulled her into a warm hug. “Welcome to the family, my dear,” she said softly. “Though you’ve been part of it in our hearts from the start.”

As they made their way out of the courthouse, Lord Eben’s commanding presence helped part the curious on-lookers. Posey fell into step beside them, grinning broadly.

“I’ve got a little surprise waiting for you back in Whispering Pines,” she said, winking at her parents. “You’ll all love it.”

The drive back to town was a joyous affair, with Vienna babbling happily in her car seat and Fia’s hand warm in his. As they turned onto Main Street, Sayer’s jaw dropped.

The entire town seemed to have turned out to welcome them home. Streamers and balloons adorned every lamppost and storefront. A huge banner stretched across the street proclaiming “WELCOME HOME, VIENNA!”

“Oh my god,” Fia breathed, her eyes wide with wonder.

As soon as they parked, they were swarmed by townsfolk. Elsie appeared as if by magic, whisking Vienna out of her car seat with practiced ease.

“There’s my sweet girl,” she cooed, peppering the giggling toddler with kisses. “We’ve got a special treat waiting for you at the café.”

Before Sayer could process what was happening, they were being ushered down the street toward the Lone Wolf. The normally cozy café had been transformed into party central with every table groaning under the weight of food and drinks.

In the center of the dining room was an enormous cake adorned with an edible photo of the three of them. Sayer felt his throat tighten with emotion at the sight.

“Speech! Speech!” someone called out, and suddenly all eyes were on them.

Sayer cleared his throat, unaccustomed to being the center of attention in quite this way. “I... we... thank you all so much,” he began, his voice rough with emotion. “I can’t begin to express how much your support has meant to us.”

Fia squeezed his hand, taking over seamlessly. “When I first came to Whispering Pines, I was lost and alone,” she said, her eyes shining. “I never could have imagined finding not just a home, but a true family - both with Sayer and Vienna, and with all of you. You’ve shown us what real community looks like, and we are so grateful to be raising our daughter here.”

A chorus of “awws” filled the café. Sayer wrapped an arm around Fia’s waist, pulling her close as he addressed the crowd once more.

“Oh my,” Lady Harmony breathed, her eyes wide with wonder. “What a delightful little town you’ve found, Sayer.”

Lord Eben chuckled, a sound that still surprised Sayer with its warmth. “I daresay this beats any of the stuffy galas we’ve thrown over the years.”

Sayer watched with amusement as his father, usually so aloof, found himself drawn into an animated conversation with Kade about the finer points of running a business in a magical community. Lady Harmony was in her element, charming everyone she met with her grace and genuine interest in their lives.

During Sayer’s impromptu speech, he made sure to acknowledge his parents. “And a special thank you to my parents, Lord Eben and Lady Harmony,” he said, his voice thick with emotion. “Your support and love have meant the world to us.”

As the party continued, Sayer found moments to observe his family interacting with the townspeople. His father was uncharacteristically relaxed, laughing openly at one of Jasper’s ghostly jokes. His mother had formed an instant bond with Elsie, the two of them fussing over Vienna and exchanging grandmother tips.

“You’ve done well for yourself, son,” Lord Eben said quietly. “This is what truly matters in life – family, community, love. I’m proud of the man you’ve become.”

Sayer sniffled. “Thank you, Father,” he managed. “That means a lot.”

Lord Eben clapped him on the shoulder. “Now, what do you say we rescue your mate before your mother convinces Fia to redecorate your entire house?”

Sayer found himself swept up in the tide of excitement, shaking hands and accepting congratulations from what felt like the entire town. Through it all, he kept one hand on Fia’s lower back, anchoring himself to his family.

“You’ve all played a part in bringing us to this moment,” he said. “We couldn’t have done it without you. So please, eat, drink, and celebrate with us. This victory belongs to all of us.”

A cheer went up as Kade began pouring tea and lemonade and Elsie started cutting the cake. Soon the café was filled with the happy buzz of conversation and laughter.

Sayer found himself pulled into conversation after conversation, accepting congratulations and sharing the highlights of the trial. But his eyes kept straying to Fia, watching as she moved through the crowd with Vienna on her hip.

She was radiant, her smile bright enough to light up the room. Every so often, she’d catch his gaze and her eyes would soften, a private smile just for him. In those moments, Sayer felt like the luckiest man alive.

As the party was in full swing, Sayer noticed Celeste approaching them, little Amara cradled in her arms. Kade hovered nearby, his eyes never straying far from his wife and newborn daughter.

“I’m so happy for you both,” Celeste said warmly, reaching out to squeeze Fia’s hand. “Vienna couldn’t ask for better parents.”

As if on cue, Vienna let out a happy squeal and reached for Celeste and baby Amara. With a laugh, Fia carefully transferred the squirming toddler into Celeste’s free arm.

“Oh, you’re getting so big,” Celeste cooed, balancing Vienna and Amara expertly. “And look how gentle you are with little Amara.”

Vienna’s brow furrowed in concentration as she stared at baby Amara. Then, to everyone’s shock, she pointed to Fia’s stomach and declared, “Baby!”

A hush fell over the nearby partygoers. Sayer’s heart skipped a beat as he looked at Fia, whose eyes were wide with surprise.

“Oh, sweetheart, Auntie Celeste is the one with the baby,” Fia said with a nervous laugh, gesturing to Amara.

But Vienna was insistent, jabbing a finger at Fia’s belly again. “Baby,” she repeated firmly.

Celeste’s eyes widened. “Oh my,” she breathed. “Could it be...”

Sayer’s mind reeled. They had only found out about the pregnancy a few days ago and hadn’t told anyone yet. How could Vienna possibly know? He searched Fia’s face, seeing his own mix of shock and wonder reflected there.

Before they could react, Elsie swooped in to scoop up Vienna. “Now, now, little one,” she said with a knowing smile. “Let’s not go revealing everyone’s secrets, hmm? Who wants more cake?”

As Elsie whisked Vienna away, leaving a trail of laughter in her wake, Sayer pulled Fia close. “Are you okay?” he murmured, searching her face.

Fia nodded, failing to hide a grin. “Just... amazed,” she said softly. “How did she know?”

Sayer pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead. “I think our daughter might be even more magical than we realized,” he said with a chuckle. “But let’s keep it between us for now, okay? Today is about celebrating our family as it is.”

Fia nodded, visibly relaxing in his arms. “You’re right,” she said, stretching up to kiss him softly. “For now, let’s just enjoy this moment.”

As they turned back to their guests, Sayer couldn’t help but marvel at the unexpected depth of Vienna’s abilities. It seemed their little family was destined for even more magical adventures than he’d imagined.

As the party continued around them, Sayer held Fia close, marveling at the unexpected turns his life had taken. Just a few months ago, he’d been a confirmed bachelor, focused solely on his work. Now, he had a family, a community, and another child on the way.

It was more than he’d ever dared to dream of, and Sayer silently vowed to cherish every moment. But now, he needed to do one more thing.
