TWENTY-FOUR

DAZE

When it comes to getting me and Frey downtown quickly enough to intervene in Heywood's speech, the only logical method is to go on foot. With traffic being heavily monitored in and out of the city, stealth is the only option.

While the threat of a clock ticking down toward an imminent explosion looms overhead, I can't deny an unexpected benefit to traipsing through alleyways with Frey by my side.

It's fucking fun. No drug on earth can get you higher than this. Hell, watching her eyes narrow with stern focus is almost better than catching her wide-eyed reactions to pleasure during sex. She's in her element here, keeping pace with every step I take—but with far more confidence than she did, trailing after me like a lost puppy. Gone is the frightened woman she was weeks ago. She walks in lockstep with me, a true partner in every aspect. Rather than fearful and downcast, she holds her head held high as we scope out the fastest route to the news station, and I can't take my fucking eyes off her. Even with a hood drawn low, she's mesmerizing.

"I think I could get used to some more dominant role play when this is all over," I tell her.

She flashes me a smile that makes my dick harden in a heartbeat. "Easy there, tiger. We have to survive today first."

She's damn right about that. While moving on foot is certainly faster than a car would have been, the city is swarming with both people and police. We have to move quickly while blending in with the boisterous foot traffic who have no fucking idea what potentially lies beneath them just a few blocks away.

When we finally make it to the station one more hurdle in our way appears.

"Shit," I tell her. "The security is tight. Seems like your daddy might have had a heads-up about our arrival."

"I don't think so." She's frowning, using that beautiful brain of hers. "It has to be more than a hunch if they have this many officers here and not at city hall.

We watch the patrols for a while, and then something stands out to me.

"They're looking for someone," I say. "Seems like Jamie must have ruffled some feathers. They're on standby for him."

"How are we going to get in?" Frey asks.

"You leave that to me." I scan the building again and hunt for an easy entrance. There isn't one. The police presence is tight, and they're clustered at the building. "We could try to cause a distraction," I say. "I'll draw them away while you head in?—"

"That could work," an unfamiliar voice pitches in. "If you want to get shot before you can even get closer, that is. If I've noticed you two, it's only a matter of time before they do."

I whirl around to find a figure dressed in a black hoodie with the hood drawn low. Frey must recognize him because her eyes widen.

"Jamie?"

"I thought you could use some help," he says.

"Well, since they're looking for us both, I don't see another way to get her inside without drawing notice," I point out.

"You're right," Jamie admits. "There is no way to get her in from here. They have the whole entire building surrounded."

"How then?"

He smirks. "We go underground. This way."

He heads for the alleyway we came through and then herds us down a block in the direction opposite the station. After picking his way past a brick building with its windows boarded, he pries open a metal fire door and gestures for us to head inside.

The "inside" being a dark metal staircase leading down.

"If this is some kind of trap, you won't live to tell about it, I can assure you of that," I warn.

Jamie winks. "If this is a trap, then I think we'd all three be dead, and I kind of like living. Come on."

We head into the darkness and reach a small, enclosed landing at the bottom of the steps. There, through another metal door, is what looks like some old maintenance tunnel cutting underground.

"Not many people know about this," Jamie explains while leading the way forward, using his cell phone as a makeshift flashlight. "But it's a shortcut that I discovered from my old coworker."

Abruptly, he turns to a rusted door. "This is the way in, and it'll bring you up the service stairwell. Make a right at the third floor and you'll be within striking distance of the broadcast room."

"And what will we do from there?"

"I'll jam the systems and allow her to broadcast," he says. "She'll be doing the talking, but your job? Clear the way for us to get on air, preferably without getting shot in the process."

"Deal."

"Well, what are we waiting for?" Jamie asks. "It's showtime."
