Chapter eleven
Roman
T he agony in Mia’s scream had my wolf clawing at my restraint, desperate to save our little mate from the pain. I knew it had to be done and admired Aiden’s control, as he was also shocked. I walked behind him to watch Mia for any sign that it was working. Mia’s eyes widened and softened as she stared into Aiden’s. “That’s enough! It worked,” I told Theo.
He dropped the stun gun and ran into the kitchen to throw up in the sink as I moved forward with Hollis to take care of Mia and Aiden. Aiden stumbled back as soon as the current stopped, and Hollis caught Mia before she collapsed and carried her to the bedroom.
I grabbed Aiden to help steady him and could feel the tremors still wracking his body. “Are you ok?” He nodded shakily but didn’t speak. Once I was sure he wouldn’t fall, I went into the kitchen to check on Theo. The vampire was sitting on the kitchen floor with his arms propped on his knees and his head hanging between them. I knelt in front of him, unsurprised to see the tears falling from his eyes.
“She’s going to hate me,” he said, sounding like a shell of himself.
“No, she won’t,” I assured him. “It had to happen; there wasn’t any way around it, and she’ll understand that. Now come on, let’s go check on our mate.” I stood and offered him my hand, which he took, and pulled Theo to his feet.
Aiden was no longer in the living room, and when we entered Mia’s room, we found him and Hollis on the bed. Hollis was leaning against the headboard with an unconscious Mia still cradled in his arms, and Aiden was stretched out across the foot of the bed, recovering from his ordeal. I was struck by how small Mia looked in his arms. Theo climbed onto the bed beside Hollis and pulled Mia’s prone body into his arms. He rocked back and forth with her while chanting his apologies.
I watched my pack from the doorway, my wolf puffing up with pride and determination.
Whether it’s Dr. Parote and his sadistic experiments or some elite assassin guild— I wouldn’t let anyone or anything hurt them.
