EPILOGUE

Harrison

The celebration is alive around me, laughter and music weaving through the air like a vibrant tapestry. I sit at a round table, my friends swirling in and out of view, their joy infectious. Today is a day of union, of love — a day when my Alpha, Wyatt, and his fated mate, Octavia Bellmont, now Octavia Saltman, pledged their lives to one another. I should be feeling elated, but a gnawing sensation lingers in my chest, an emptiness that whispers of something missing.

“Come on, Harrison,” my wolf nudges, his voice a low growl in my mind. “We still need to find her. Our mate.”

I know , I think back, but it feels like I’ve been searching for ages. The world spins around me, a blur of dancing couples and shimmering decorations, and for a moment, I let myself get lost in it. My gaze drifts across the room, taking in the joyous scene: the way Wyatt lifts Octavia in a playful twirl, the sparkle in her laughter, the warmth radiating between them. It’s beautiful, intoxicating… and it only deepens that familiar ache.

Just as I’m about to wallow in my thoughts, a scent wafts through the air, drawing me from my melancholy. It’s sweet, syrupy — like pancakes fresh off the griddle, dusted with powdered sugar. My stomach growls in response, but it’s more than just hunger that pulls me in. I stand, propelled by an instinct stronger than mere appetite, and follow the delicious aroma.

As I weave through the crowd, the scent intensifies, guiding me toward the refreshment station. There, standing like a beacon amid the chaos, is a woman. Her golden blonde hair catches the light, cascading down her back to her waist like sunlight on water. She’s waiting for the bartender, her patience evident as she taps her fingers lightly against the counter.

I tap her shoulder, heart pounding in my chest as if I’ve just sprinted a mile. When she turns around, her cobalt blue eyes meet mine, and time seems to freeze. She’s stunning, and I’m struck dumb, my breath hitching at the beauty in front of me.

“Hi,” I manage, my voice barely above a whisper, as if speaking louder might shatter this moment.

“Hey!” she replies, her smile brightening the room. It’s infectious, and I can’t help but smile back, even as my wolf howls in excitement.

But that’s when it hits me — the unmistakable, overwhelming truth. This woman isn’t just captivating; she’s my mate. The realization sends a jolt through my body, electrifying every nerve, every instinct. Yet, as my wolf growls with unrestrained joy, a cloud of confusion descends upon us both.

She’s not a wolf. The scent of magic lingers around her, a fragrance of earth and whispering winds. This woman is a witch.

“Are you enjoying the wedding?” she asks, tilting her head slightly, her expression curious.

“Yeah, it’s… amazing,” I stammer, still grappling with the whirlwind of emotions surging within me. “Wyatt and Octavia are perfect for each other.”

Her smile widens, a genuine warmth in her eyes. “They really are. I’ve known Octavia since she was a teen and on her own. I stumbled into the diner one day, and kinda never left.”

“So you know Octavia well?” I ask, desperate to keep the conversation going, to hold onto this moment just a little longer.

“Pretty well. I used to hang out with Octavia during her shifts then visits to my mother’s coven some weekends. I’m Wren, by the way, like the bird,” she introduces herself, extending a hand.

“Harrison,” I reply, shaking her hand, the contact sending a spark of electricity through my skin. “So, you’re a witch?”

She laughs, a light, melodic sound that sends a thrill through me. “Yes, I am. Is that a problem?”

“No, not at all,” I assure her, though my wolf is pacing anxiously in my mind. “I just… I didn’t expect to meet someone like you here.”

“Someone like me?” she raises an eyebrow, a teasing glint in her eyes.

I swallow hard, my heart racing. “A witch. I didn’t know we were inviting witches to the pack celebrations.”

“Well, it’s a mixed world we live in, isn’t it? Besides, I’m here for Octavia, not the pack.”

“I get that,” I nod, trying to keep my composure. “But, uh… what do you think of the whole wolf-witch dynamic?”

Wren’s expression shifts, a hint of seriousness entering her gaze. “It’s complicated. But I believe we all have a place in this world, regardless of our backgrounds.”

I can’t help but admire her conviction. There’s a strength in her that draws me in further. “That’s a good way to look at it,” I say, nodding, feeling the weight of her words settle in my heart.

As we talk, the party swirls around us, laughter and music fading into the background. All that matters is this moment, this connection. My wolf settles slightly, though the yearning for our mate remains, a constant, pulsing reminder of what it means to find someone who feels like home.

“So, Harrison,” she says, a playful smile tugging at her lips. “What does a Gamma do at a wedding? Are you supposed to keep order or something?”

I chuckle, the tension easing. “Honestly? I’m more of a spectator today. My job is to look intimidating and make sure no one starts any trouble.”

She laughs again, and the sound sends warmth flooding through me. “You don’t seem very intimidating.”

“Maybe I’m just good at faking it,” I reply, a grin spreading across my face.

“I think you’re doing just fine,” she says, her gaze holding mine with an intensity that makes my heart race.

But just as I’m about to lean in, to explore this strange and wonderful chemistry between us, a commotion erupts across the room. A group of rowdy wolves bursts through the doors, laughter and shouts accompanying them. They’re loud, raucous, and clearly overindulged in the drinks, their joy disruptive against the backdrop of the wedding celebration.

Wren glances over, her expression shifting slightly. “Looks like the party is getting a little wild,” she comments lightly.

“Yeah, I should probably—” I begin, but before I can finish, one of the wolves trips, sending a table of decorations crashing to the ground.

Instinct kicks in, and I turn toward the chaos, my Gamma instincts flaring. “Stay here,” I tell Wren, my voice firm. The moment she nods, I push through the crowd, ready to restore order.

I navigate the throng of guests, pulling myself toward the source of the disturbance. A few familiar faces are tangled in the mess, their laughter echoing even as I approach. I can feel my wolf stirring restlessly, the need to protect and ensure safety coursing through me.

“Guys, come on! This is a wedding, not a wrestling match!” I call out, trying to keep my voice steady despite the rising tension.

The wolves look up, and the laughter dies down a notch. “Lighten up, Harrison! We’re just having some fun!” one of them slurs, a lopsided grin plastered across his face.

“Fun is good, but not at the expense of the party!” I retort, moving closer to help pick up the fallen decorations. “Let’s keep it together, alright?”

They groan but start to help. As we work to restore order, I can’t shake the feeling of Wren’s gaze on me, the warmth of her presence still lingering.

Once the chaos settles, I return to the refreshment station, but my heart sinks as I scan the crowd. Wren is gone. I search frantically, weaving through the guests, my pulse racing. Where did she go?

Just as panic begins to set in, I catch sight of her across the room, speaking with Octavia, their heads close together. Relief floods through me, but it’s swiftly followed by uncertainty.

I don’t know how to navigate this new reality — the reality where my mate is a witch. And how do I tell her? A world where our lives could intertwine, yet also be fraught with danger, misunderstanding, and prejudice.

But as I watch her laugh with my Luna, her smile lighting up her face, I realize one undeniable truth: I can’t let this chance slip away. Not when she feels like everything I never knew I needed.

With renewed determination, I make my way toward them, ready to embrace whatever comes next. The dance of fate has begun, and I’m not prepared to step away just yet.

“Hey, Wren,” I say, my voice steady as I approach. “Mind if I steal you for a moment?”

She turns, her expression brightening as she meets my gaze. “Of course, Harrison. What’s up?”

“Can we talk? Just you and me?”

Octavia glances between us, a knowing smile on her face. “I’ll let you two be.”

As she walks away, I feel a knot in my stomach. This is it. Time to confront the unknown and take a step into the uncertain future.

“Where do you want to go?” Wren asks, and I take a deep breath, trying to quell the anxiety bubbling beneath the surface.

“Outside? I think I need some fresh air,” I suggest, and she nods, falling into step beside me as we weave through the crowd.

Once we step outside into the cool evening air, I pause, gathering my thoughts. The stars twinkle above us, a brilliant tapestry against the dark sky, and I can hear the soft music still playing from inside.

“So, what did you want to talk about?” Wren asks, her eyes glimmering with curiosity.

I take a deep breath, my heart pounding. “I know this might sound strange, but… you are my mate. My wolf and I are sure of it.”

Her eyes widen, surprise flickering across her features, and for a moment, I worry I’ve gone too far. “Harrison…”

“No, let me finish,” I say quickly, my words tumbling out. “I know you’re a witch and I’m a wolf, and there’s a lot to unpack there. But the moment I saw you, everything changed. I can’t explain it. It’s like you were meant to be in my life, and I can’t just let that go without trying.”

Silence stretches between us, the moon casting a soft glow on her face. I search her expression, desperate for a sign, any sign that she feels the same pull I do.

Finally, she takes a step closer, her voice barely above a whisper. “I felt it too, Harrison. The moment you walked up to me, I could sense this… connection. But a wolf and a witch? It’s not exactly common.”

“I know,” I reply, my voice steady despite the uncertainty swirling within me. “But maybe we can change that? Maybe we can figure it out together.”

She studies me for a long moment, her deep cobalt blue eyes searching mine. “You’re serious about this?”

“Absolutely,” I say, my heart racing. “I’ve never felt like this before. I don’t want to turn away from it.”

A slow smile spreads across her face, and my heart lifts. “Okay, then. Let’s see where this takes us. The Goddess must know what she’s doing, right?”

I grin back, a sense of relief washing over me. For the first time in what feels like forever, I feel hopeful. My wolf howls in approval, the bond between us solidifying with each passing second.

“So… what now?” she asks, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

“Well, first, I think we should probably enjoy the rest of the wedding,” I suggest, motioning back toward the doors. “And then… maybe we can talk about what it means to be a wolf and a witch together?”

“I’d like that,” she replies, and as we walk back inside, I can’t shake the feeling that this is just the beginning of something extraordinary.

The music swells as we step back into the celebration, and I can already picture the adventures ahead of us — two unlikely souls navigating a world filled with magic and strength, love and acceptance.

And as I glance at Wren, her laughter ringing like music in my ears, I know I’ll do whatever it takes to protect this bond. No matter the challenges that lie ahead, I’m ready to embrace our fate together.
