2. Dionysus
I realized someone had tagged along with me on my trip. I expected the hybrid, but it was the blind warlock. Pax had his cane under his arm and looked pretty badass. Shit. He shouldn't be here. It had nothing to do with him being blind and everything to do with whose door I was about to kick down.
"You shouldn't have come."
I was honestly shocked he could be away from her this soon. The only reason I could be was that I could fucking fix this. Watching her that thin and having panic attacks again after so long was sending me into a rage. I didn't particularly want to tell them anything about their past, but we needed to figure out how to help her.
He knew. Pax was astute. I told him his history, and he knew I wasn't some all-powerful being who created any type of supernatural. He still knew I could fix this.
"You wouldn't have left unless you had a solution. Where are we?"
"Outside of Athena's penthouse."
"Fuck."
"Yeah. She ran right after she told me Medusa was a fury. Athena doesn't run. I was more concerned about getting to my mate. She'll also have ambrosia. That'll fix Medusa. It's food of the gods."
Because I hated looking at her, weak and emaciated. Medusa was gloriously curvy and one of the strongest people I knew. I couldn't go to Olympus to get it, but I could break into Athena's place and steal hers.
I couldn't go home. My mother had no way of knowing she was sleeping with Zeus. He'd shapeshifted. I wasn't even there until one particularly strong sperm did its thing. Hera murdered my mother and came for me several times.
She killed me once. All that was left of me was my heart. Zeus sewed it into his leg and regrew me like some weird little god bacteria. Then, she drove me insane and cursed me to roam the earth, sharing the wonders of wine. I did a lot of terrible things then.
I couldn't count on my father. Yeah, he'd bring me back if she killed me again, but he wouldn't do a damned thing if she messed with my mind. So, I made Earth my home and met a beautiful woman with snakes for hair. I repeatedly tried to break her curse like someone had broken mine.
And I'd failed for thousands of years. She got taken by the Coalition under my watch. I wouldn't fail her again.
"I've heard of it. Can it fix everything?"
I thought I knew what he was asking.
"It won't heal your eyes. It won't do anything for the mental damage that the place did. It's very high calorie. If you aren't a god, you probably don't want to eat as much of it as we do. It should get her back to a healthy weight sooner than Cas's cooking. Though I have heard he's a fantastic cook."
"He is."
"Stay behind me and don't come in until I tell you. There's probably going to be some god magic flying when I kick her door down."
"Couldn't you just magick yourself in like Benji does?" Pax asked.
I grinned like a psychopath. They didn't call me the Mad God for nothing.
"Yes. But she pissed me off and hurt our mate. Are you telling me that you don't want me to fuck her shit up?"
This was a test. I needed to know how committed Pax was to our mate. Was he willing to fight a god and burn the world down? Because that's what I needed if I was going to share her with him. I needed him to do that, even if he was blind. He was still a powerful warlock who took down a Coalition facility.
"Fuck yes. What do you need me to do?"
"That's my boy!" I yelled. "Stay outside until the magic stops flying."
I walked up to Athena's door and kicked it in with a lot more magic than I needed. She flung magic at me right away, which I deflected right into a marble bust of her that was probably thousands of years old. I felt bad for the artist, but fuck her. She started this.
"Dionysus? What do you want?" Athena said when she realized it was me.
She lowered her hands like she didn't want to fight anymore. My half-sister was utterly brilliant, but she didn't get people at all. Athena honestly didn't understand why I was here.
"Pax?" I yelled.
He came in, tapping his cane.
"That wasn't really fucking her shit up, Di," Pax said with utterly serene resting bitch face.
I actually really liked this guy.
"That bust was priceless, and the artist is long dead," Athena snarled.
"I thought you were too smart to be materialistic," I hooted.
"What do the two of you want?"
"Your ambrosia and answers."
Athena tossed her black hair over her shoulder.
"You never liked ambrosia. You said it made your ass big. Why do you need mine?"
I pinched the bridge of my nose.
"Medusa? My fucking mate. You know, the one you cursed and got thrown into New Eden Asylum? They starved her and she needs it. You also owe her answers why you cursed her."
"I didn't curse her. Why does everyone say that?"
"You turned her hair to snakes and made her gaze lethal," Pax snapped.
Yeah, he'd do. He was ready to take on Athena for Medusa, so he was cool with me.
"You're the champion. She's finally met you?" Athena said.
Athena looked hungry at the idea that Pax and Medusa had finally met. Pax just looked confused and frankly, so was I.
"I'm her mate. One of them."
"How many has she met?"
"Dionysus, Cas, Benji, and me."
"Good. It's time. I'll get the ambrosia, and you can bring me to Medusa."
I grabbed Athena's arm before she could leave. I was glad she was finally willing to talk, but she'd better not be up to something.
"If you so much as startle my mate, I'll beat the shit out of you. She's best friends with Hephaestus, Hades, and Persephone, so you might end up in Tartarus."
"No, something is coming. She's the key, and it's time she knows the truth."
I meant it. I'd been nice to Athena because I was hoping she'd lift her curse, but if she hurt my mate again, she'd get the Mad God.
