Chapter 10

BEA

I’d like to say that our steamy kiss ended in the consummation of our marriage, but another knock on Ky’s door made certain we weren’t going to be able to finish what we started, at least not yet. It was for the best anyway because in all honesty, I still had a lot to think about. Whether our nuptials should be legalized was at the top of that list.

“It’s probably Mina or Flynn coming to check on me for my parents. We should really turn our phones back on,” I told Ky as he reluctantly released me.

“Maybe we should tape a ‘do not disturb’ note to the door for the day.” My smile was answered with another, though much quicker, kiss. “Hold that thought while I go to reassure your family, and whatever you do, don’t put those jeans back on.” He grinned wickedly at me as he snatched the garment from my hands and took them with him to go answer the door. I ran after him, because there was no way I wanted to have a discussion with my brother – if that’s who was knocking – while not wearing any pants.

“She’s alive and well,” Ky offered good naturedly as he answered the door. Unfortunately for him – and maybe me too - it was not my family on the other side of the door. Nope. It was a woman. She was tall, slender, and made up like she was about to walk a runway. That is, if that runway had a pole on the end of it, since her clothes were sorely missing. To be fair, she was wearing clothes, there just wasn’t much of them to speak of. Her skirt would have looked like a chunky belt on me if I could have even managed to clasp it around my larger waistline. The shirt, well, the bottom half of her boobs were hanging out, so no further explanation needed there.

Ky stood speechless with the door gaping wide open. The woman’s lips were frozen into a surprised “O”. Then, very recognizable male laughter rang out from somewhere down the hallway, but not far enough away that we hadn’t heard.

“Looks like you were so important to your new husband that he forgot to cancel his latest booty call,” Law shouted. It was disturbing that he hadn’t left yet. It was even more disturbing that the butt-wipe was partially correct.

“Um, what?” The woman asked as she turned her attention to Law for a moment and then back to Ky again. That time, she glanced down at his hand and noticed the ring sitting on a very prominent finger.

“Oh my God! Kylan! You got married?” Her lips poked out in a brief pout when he didn’t respond. Then she popped a hip out and I had no doubt that Law, where he was seated a few feet away, got a great view of her naked ass thanks to the shift in the barely-there fabric. “What happened to ‘I never do serious’?”

Ky finally snapped out of his shocked stupor and laughed. “If I recall correctly, I told you that I only do serious with one woman, and she wasn’t you.”

“So, you cheated on her with me all this time?”

“You and I hooked up twice, and never at my apartment, so I don’t know why you’re even here.”

“He never cheated on me,” I called out from over Ky’s shoulder because I wouldn’t have his good name besmirched. Okay, well, his slightly tarnished name shouldn’t become full-on rusty at any rate.

I snagged my jeans and patted Ky on the shoulder. “I’m going to let you handle this while I go get dressed and call my family.”

“I’m married,” I heard him announce proudly. “Sandra, meet Law over there. He left my wife at the altar the other day – so I was the lucky bastard who got to marry her instead. You should hook up, since the woman he left that divine angel for turned him down.” I stood there, three feet away from the door, with my jaw gaped open, and watched as Ky shut the door once more. That time, he made sure to throw all the locks, too.

“I think the ‘do not disturb’ sign might be a necessity.” He muttered before turning and realizing that I was still standing there. “I’m so sorry about that. She just showed up, and it wasn’t like a planned hookup that I forgot to cancel or something. I don’t even know how she got my address because she’s never been here before.”

I believed Ky because he didn’t often bring women back to his place. He said it gave them the wrong idea and led to some wanting to overstay their welcome. It made me wonder if Law had something to do with Sandra showing up, and then that just led to more questions, like how he would know to contact her. None of it mattered anyway.

“You have nothing to apologize for,” I reassured Ky. Then my stomach growled. Despite getting takeout from a Thai place on the way home the night before I hadn’t eaten much of it and the lack of food was starting to catch up to me.

“Let’s get dressed and go grab some breakfast,” Ky offered.

Thankfully, when we made our way to breakfast, Law was no longer outside of Ky’s house. Maybe he had left with Sandra after all. It probably should have stung to think about, but it didn’t.

“What’s wrong?” Ky asked.

“Honestly?”

“I will always prefer honesty, even if it hurts.”

I nodded because the feeling was mutual. “I was wondering if Law and Sandra left together, but then I realized it didn’t bother me.” His brows crinkled down as he frowned at me. “Shouldn’t I feel something? Isn’t there supposed to be pain, heartbreak, anything at the thought of him leaving with another woman?”

“Maybe you’re just in shock,” Ky offered helpfully, though it seemed to pain him to do so.

I shook my head. “No. I’m not in shock; I just don’t care. That made me disappointed in myself because it meant I never should have agreed to go through with marrying him anyway. “I was having my own doubts just before Todd showed up with that letter,” I admitted.

“You were?” That seemed to surprise Ky.

“I was. It just didn’t feel right. Then, of course, after I received the letter I chalked it up to my gut knowing what was coming but I think it was more than that. No, I know it was more than that because the thing that excited me the most about the wedding was buying all those tulips out of spite after Law’s mother said only trash would have tulips for a wedding flower.”

Ky laughed at that. “So, you got off on the pettiness of creating something his family would hate?”

“He hated it, too. Thank you, by the way.”

“For what?”

“For wearing the tulip on your lapel yesterday.”

“I wouldn’t have worn anything else, Sweet Bea. They’re your favorite.”
