Chapter 76

76

Brandt sat in the open rear of the ambulance, Meyra next to him, while a Tyler paramedic patched him up. He'd been grazed. That was it. Meyra had some scratches and bruises, including a nasty one from the seat belt in Bruce Tyler's now abandoned van.

That guy was long in the wind. He'd just disappeared—Judge Fisher's truck had been found north of the county line, with tire tracks in the snow leading away.

No one knew where he was headed now. Or what he was up to, in the first place.

He'd slipped a zip drive into the pocket of Dylan Talley's overalls. Right in front, next to the cell phone she'd recorded him with.

Bruce had to have done it when he'd kissed her.

She'd turned it over to Sage when the police had arrived.

Sage had not been too happy to see her husband and his brothers as the rescue team.

Brandt was—he'd take a trio of armed Tylers, a Quade, Hunter, and Tucker at his back any day. They were men you could count on.

There was a lot they were going to have to figure out.

Dale Fisher had turned silent—no surprise, the man knew the law, after all—but what he had said in front of Meyra and Brandt was a good place for the police to start. Not to mention that his mere presence brought questions.

Dylan had a few bumps and bruises from being run off the road. Right now, she was giving Sage's cousin Zach her statement. Meyra refused to leave Brandt's side.

No one was pushing, either.

Brandt wasn't about to let them.

It was almost over. He just had to give his statement fully, in writing.

That would happen when he was back at the sheriff's office. The WHP was spearheading the rest of the investigation because of Meyra's connection to the sheriff.

She laid her head on his shoulder. "It's almost over."

"It will be soon. Then…I am taking you home."

"We can check in to your room and stay there. For as long as we want. I already told Dylan."

"She'll make it happen. I'm sure of it." Brandt cupped her cheek in his good hand. "I love you. I can't ever say that enough."

"I know. I love you, too, Brandt Barratt. I am tired of waiting."

They had waited long enough.

He just pulled her closer and kissed her. The way he had been wanting to forever.

The long wait was over.
