Chapter 34

CHAPTER

THIRTY-FOUR

"If I tell you something, do you promise to keep it between the two of us?" Maddie paused as she and Adrienne stepped outside near a garden area.

Concern filled Adrienne's gaze. "Yes, of course. What's going on?"

Maddie took Adrienne's arm and pulled her farther away from the path, toward a stone bench perched amongst some hibiscus plants.

Maddie shifted toward Adrienne. "I think someone is plotting against Josh."

"What?" A knot formed on Adrienne's brow. "What do you mean?"

"I mean, I think there are people in this company who don't want to see Josh named CEO. They're banding against him and trying to convince the board to choose Nico instead."

Her eyes widened. "Wow . . . I hadn't heard. I guess I'm not in a position of power, so no one has bothered to mention it to little old me."

"There's more . . ." Now that Maddie had started, she might as well finish. "I wonder if someone is so desperate to keep Josh from becoming CEO that they're taking it a step further. I'm wondering if someone wants to get him out of the way—permanently."

"You mean by trying to kill him?" Her words came out quickly and in a hushed whisper.

Maddie hesitated a minute before nodding. "Yes, by trying to kill him. Maybe the balcony incident was meant for him, not me. And the slashed tire on the side-by-side? Maybe that wasn't a coincidence either."

Adrienne blinked in surprise. "Wow. I never considered that maybe someone had more sinister motives. But that's extreme, right?"

"It is. But when you're talking about a company with this much power and money, the stakes are high."

"I can't argue with that." She tilted her head as she observed Maddie. "What are you going to do?"

"I'm trying to figure out what's going on. I just might be a target also, by default."

Adrienne's eyes widened. "That's terrible. Should you even stay?"

"I'm a suspect in Jared's death. The detective pretty much said I needed to stay in Kauai. But I feel like I'm caught in a dangerous game I never signed up to be part of."

"I'd say." Adrienne softly gripped Maddie's arm. "What can I do to help?"

"You don't need to do anything. But I need to find some answers before anyone else gets hurt."

"Where do you even start?" She dropped her hand and leaned back, but her gaze remained intense.

"I start by making a list of who might hate me—or Josh. And why."

"That sounds like a tall order." Hesitation marred her voice. "Most people aren't going to admit to anything."

"I know. Believe me, I know."

"I could talk to some people who work at Benchmark," Adrienne offered. "Get the office gossip, so to speak."

"I could never ask you to do that."

"It's going to be easier for me. I talk to people at the company all the time. As an assistant, most of the employees don't even notice me."

She had a point but . . . "I can't pull you into this."

"I want to help. I can see what I can find out."

Maddie studied Adrienne's face, still hesitant to accept the offer. "Are you sure?"

"I'm positive. I'm going to keep my eyes peeled and my ears open."

"Whatever you do, don't put yourself in danger. Promise me." Maddie stared her friend dead in the eye to drive home her point.

Adrienne nodded. "I promise."

Before the concert ended, Maddie started back to her room. As she headed through the lobby toward the corridor leading to the west wing, movement ahead caught her eye.

Someone had quickly darted out of sight.

She was pretty sure it was a woman in a red dress.

Maddie quickened her steps to get a better look. This person couldn't have gotten very far away. Maddie should be able to catch up.

She paused at the corner and peered around it as she searched for the mystery woman.

Her breath caught as she spotted her.

It was just as she'd thought.

Logan.

The woman had left the concert, and now she was headed to the west wing of the resort.

Was that because her room was this direction? Or was she headed this way for another purpose? Maybe to see Josh? To wait for him in his room?

Maddie slowed her steps, curious about what the woman was doing.

But she kept a steady pace behind her, making sure her steps were quiet. Every time Logan glanced behind her, Maddie ducked out of the way.

She followed the woman up the stairs.

To the fourth floor.

As Logan turned another corner, Maddie crept closer. Her heart pounded in her ears with anticipation.

She paused at the next hallway, knowing a long stretch was ahead with no place to hide. She couldn't show her hand now. Instead, she peered around the corner.

Just as Maddie thought, it looked like Logan was headed . . . to Josh's room.

A door to another room opened behind her, and Maddie ducked back behind the wall. She plastered on a casual smile at the man who emerged and started in the opposite direction.

The door slammed behind him.

When Maddie glanced back at Logan, the woman was hurrying down the hallway, away from Josh's suite.

Was that because she'd been spooked? Or had she never planned on stopping at Josh's room at all?

It was impossible to know, and Maddie vowed not to jump to conclusions. But it was hard not to given the circumstances.
